Joystiq interview: GameTrailers EIC sets record straight on GRID controversy

There's been a lot of controversy surrounding GameTrailer's comparison video of Race Driver: GRID, which pitted the PlayStation 3 version up against ... um ... the PlayStation 3 version. Is the site horrifically biased? On Microsoft's payroll? We spoke with GameTrailers Editor In Chief, Shane Satterfield, to clear up the matter.

How did this mistake happen?

It was a mistake in our post-production process. After we captured the footage from both versions, some of the footage of the PlayStation 3 version of the game was incorrectly placed in the bin for the Xbox 360 footage. Our video editor on this particular project is not a games person and completely overlooked the fact that he had the wrong footage in the wrong place. We normally have multiple checks from games editorial on every segment that is published, but there was some confusion on who did/did not look at it before it was sent out for compression. Thus, the mistake.

______________

Hmmmm...what do you all think of this explanation. I dunno.

Explain how the two versions looked graphically different then. Also explain why the version for PS3 was given a head on high speed crash to demonstrait "weaker crashes" while the XBOX360 version was given a glancing swipe that sent the car into a barrel roll.

They can spin it however they want, they were caught.

As for the fact that especially one guy is saying over and over again that only the crash was miss labeled, prove it.  They already screwed one part up, prove to me they didnt screw up another. Ive played the demo of this game, it looks neither bland or muddie or washed out. But then again, I have a HDMI cable hooked up to my TV and PS3.

Wait, maybe you didnt know that, Gametrailers regularly uses S Cables for their PS3 grabs and turns off all the RGB and super white settings in the system when they do use HDMI, because not everyone has access to HDMI or a TV that can use RGB and Super White.

But the 360 versions are all ran on HDMI.

Both of those statements are true, and I dont feel like digging to find the links. Seeing as that I dont care one way or the other (as you can see I have all systems) I just like grounding internet debate.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

This space Reserved for the Nuggets of Wisdom dropped by Bladeforce:

"Why post something like this when all it will get is PS3 owners blinded to reality replying? BOTH THE PS3 AND BLUE-RAY WILL NOT LAST 3 YEARS! TECHNOLOGY CHANGED TOO FAST!"

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

they mistakenly took the ps3 version and show a full crash while putting a x360 logo on it.

Then they made another movie and mistakenly made a weaker crash, then they mistakenly made the ps3 movie look graphically weak.

are you guys serious?

Can anyone explain to me how downgrading 1 particular version of the movie can be a mistake?

Thats like buying a gun, put bullets in it, walk to somebody and aim it on his head and shoot and say it was a mistake.

I just found the actual comparison video in HD and not crappy youtube quality.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=561DBBRI

Now that I've seen the comparison in HD, I believe I have seen enough to forgive this error.

In fact, the only real difference I seemed to notice between the two versions in the video would be that the PS3 and 360 versions seem to have a little difference in color. However, could this be because of GT's (in my own opinion, stupid) decision to not get PS3 footage with RGB Full and instead record in Limited? Who knows, but at the very least, I would still question the crash used for the PS3 version because it was very pathetic.

then this would be the 3rd comparison video were they dont use the ps3 full optimal setting.

get over it, GT is bias towards x360, end of story

btw they dont like the wii also

People who think that Gametrailers is in fact Sony biased should watch this episode of Bonus Round:

http://www.gametrailers.com/bonusround.php?ep=6&pt=1

http://www.gametrailers.com/bonusround.php?ep=6&pt=2

Notice how Geoff Keighley's questioning is pretty harsh and brash to the Xbox exec., yet, he is lax and mellow with the Sony rep.

Off topic, but Geoff got Aaron pretty good with regards to XBL costing money and PSN being free. Mr. Greenberg tried to spin it and say that Silver users are still spending money on Arcade titles and such, but Geoff said that even though that's free, they can't play online, which is something I've been saying for a while now. How is XBL better, or "worth the money" when that $50 a year is EXCLUSIVELY for playing online, when on PSN you can do it free?

I don't believe them but I don't really care. Some of us had our suspicions of bias based on their choice of boxart. I'm not really expecting anything from them. I like going there to watch vids and check out the forums.

And again with the Bonus Round video....maybe he was more harsh on the M$ rep because XBL deserves it more. The questions were all legitimate. "What's your stance on paying for Live" "What about mods" "Where is the larger movie library" etc. All legitimate

btw, havent gotten to the Sony rep yet, so I may need to edit this post later :)

That reminds me of why Gamespot removed their 9,5 review of GTA4...
