Forums - Gaming - Our gaming lifestyle- how much has the current gen cost you?

I was over at the in-laws place on Sunday playing Wii Fit and explaining to them the cost of getting into video gaming and as I thought more about it I came to the conclusion that video gaming is a life style choice. An expensive one at that! If you ratio the cost/entertainment value its easy to see that it’s a lifestyle better suited for big cash spenders otherwise the once off purchases of the consoles and a game or two don’t equate to the entertainment value of the package.

This lead me to think it would be awesome to brag about the amount of cash we have spent on this generation of video games! Now I know I will pale in comparison to some people but I’ll get the ball rolling with a very close estimate of my expenditures in the current gen, starting with the DS

Wii with 9 games, extra wiimote, light gun peripheral $980AU (I got some awesome game bargains!)

2x DS with 7 games and accessories $805AU

3 game trade ins that lost me about $60AU

Renting games $120AU

Total =  $1965AU

I also plan on spending another couple of grand this generation on a HD TV a ps3 and a lot more games

Edit: I double checked my ds colection cos I thought i was missing a game and it was SONIC!!! i 4got all about it! so 8ds games bringing my total to $2,005.00 AU

If at first you don't succeed, you fail

It depends on your habits as a gamer. Someone can now buy a Gamecube for $30 and pick up 10 great games for another$50-70 to last them most of the year. Same thing with PS2 and Xbox. We on here choose to purchase games day one and pay out our asses these high costs. Even now if you were to buy a 360 and only purchase games within the launch year you can get 2-3 games for the price of one game at $60.

I have about $1200 worth of hardware and software fo this gen but not all of it was purchased by myself.

I expect to make a net profit due to investments (mainly Nintendo). I would have never learned enough to invest if I hadn't gotten into this console gen, so I'll consider it a net profit.

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

Lets see:

(Everything is in Euro's... So ill multiply it by 1.55)

Wii

Wii - 250.

Extra controller + Nunchuk - 60.

14 Wii-games - 14x50 = 700.

Component-cable - 30.

2x 2000 Wii points - 40.

PS3

PS3 - 400.

HDMI Cable - 30.

Extra controller - 50.

4 games - 4x60 = 240.

Headset - 30.

Blu-Ray remote control - 30.

Total:  1860 Euro's. 1860 x 1.55 = 2823.00$.

@Onyxmeth- sorry I should have made it clearer, im not talking about the past gen, and how cheap you can get stuff now im talking about the current gen and the cost of getting into it.

I'm also not looking at this from the "ahhh its so expensive! its terrible! bring the prices down" opinion, im looking at it from the perspective of "wow man that car is so awesome! you say it was $100,000??? sweet dude!!!!" the more cash the better the current gen lifestyle is, its about bragging not complaining.

It has cost me literally an arm and a leg. Video consoles + games are expensive.

Fair enough. I was commenting mainly on your first paragraph because you made it seem that it was necesaary for gaming to be an expensive "lifestyle choice" when there are many inexpensive gaming alternatives to buying consoles and games as they first come out.

PS3 £425
Controller x 2 (ds 3 and sixaxis)

19 games (sold 4) (inc GT 5 p and Warhawk)

= a lot of money

It's cost me about 5 grand. Not to ban, considering my last hobby was playing paintball competitively, and that cost me more then 5 grand a year in just travel. Luckily, I was sponsored, so at least my equipment and paint was covered.

so all three system, a racing setup, and a TV... around 5 grand.

Xbox 360-

The console itself- £310

2 years of Xbox Live- £80

The wi-fi adapter and play & charge kit were a gift, but that's another £80.

PS3-

The console itself- £350

HDMI cable- £13
