Whoa mister out of line! You can't even see the line you just crossed with a telescope.

I would be seriously perturbed if Mario Kart outsold Grand Theft Auto IV. Had it done so it would be a prime indicator that this generation has gone to the imbeciles. The tragedy would be that massive. Grand Theft Auto is by far the superior product. Showing real care and love of gaming. Where as Mario Kart is yet another dumbed down clone of what was once a fantastic game.

I wouldn't hold out high hopes that Mario Kart will ever surpass Grand Theft Auto either. The reality is that Rockstar is not going to cash in this generation like last generation pumping out a couple pseudo sequels in short order instead they will be producing expansions to the main game. Which means no self competition. Which means the game will probably outsell all of its predecessors. The title should easily surpass twenty five million copies sold.

I suspect that Mario Kart for the Wii will tank out somewhere just over ten million copies world wide. Super Mario Galaxy has yet to break seven million and that is a game of exceptional excellence, and if you are betting on the casual crowd to recall Mario Kart in six months time you really are dreaming. They will be all over Nintendo's next big cash in off of an old franchise, but laid out in a party styling.

The great news about the sales is that reality does seem to still possess some grasp on the market place. A good hard working developer delivered a fundamentally superior product won against a company who just delivered a cash in. That always gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. I love to see hard workers prosper.

Easy there Captain Preference, you are, according to your profile, a 15 year old adolescent male. You have to understand that testosterone is shrinking your brain. You may think that everything that doesnt appeal to you is "gay" and a "f--cking joke". Actually things that don't appeal to 15 year old boys are more usually called normal, mature and even civilized. There are also people in this world including children, most females and many adults who find a game where you spend your time running around commiting crime and violence both distasteful and actually rather stupid and boring. It's a game aimed exactly at young males and it caters to their fascination with violence so it is not surprising that it suits your tastes but please don't mistake that for universal appeal.

um, did I miss something?

1. Since when was a 1 week million seller fail?

Since it's not a game someone wants to do well.

2. Has any Mario Kart ever hit over 1.8 million in any region in it's first week, no!

1.3 million, but still a hit. Million selling openings are rare enough as it is.

3.GTA has a history of being top heavy, when the numbers come out next week I figure the drop off is above 90%.

I wouldn't go that far, if that was the case, past GTA games would had to have legs to sell as well as they did.

4. GTA vs Wii Fit!? Are you guys insane!? It's already known Wiifit will sell over 8 million in the US alone, or 20%+ of the Wii user base.
5. You guys want to compare and compete, then compare GTA vs GTA for both platforms, understand what happened and dont let it slip past your blind fanboy rage. The PS3 GTA sold much better than the 360 when you consider the PS3 userbase, it mean's that peole are taking the Sony brand seriously as being worth 400 or whatever dollars for key games.

They already did enough arguing about the two versions. Didn't you see all those threads?

The tie in on the PS3 was much higher.

I hope you get banned for that comment, if only for that totally inappropriate homophobic use of the word "gay".

I think darkjonnyx is right, GTA4 in the long run will get a little bit less than twice the sales of Mario Kart Wii. So, it's highly likely that Mario Kart will outsell the less performing of the 2 consoles.

It's incorrect to say that GTA4 owned Mario Kart because both titles didn't have much influence of each other. Both did the best they ever did before. The Wii sold more hardware during the week of GTA's release which indicates one thing: Wii's demographic is (that is new market + nintendo fans + casual gamers) larger than the GTA4's demographic.

I can't believe I'm asking this, but would there be an appropriate homophobic use of "gay"?

I believe I missed an "and" here:

 My bad.

I'll give Rockstar did hard work, but MK Wii was NOT a cash in. They did effort, just not in the obvious ways. For one thing, that wheel had 30 prototypes. Even if you don't like the result, that shows some work went into getting it right, just for people who have an aversion to racing games, rather than the hardcore.

Frankly, this backhanded bashing offends me, not because it's against Nintendo, but because it denies the efforts a company makes. How dare you decide what is hard work and effort on a game. That because one company worked harder, does NOT mean the other company cannot be considered to have worked hard at all. That is bull.

Well that's pretty silly.. personally, I think MK is 'superior' and not a cash in at all.  I enjoy it, while I don't enjoy games like GTA.  The imbeciles like myself you're referring to don't enjoy the same things you do.. you should probably get used to that, because it happens everywhere throughout life.  Sorry, but it's just irritating when someone makes a statement like that, thinking their personal tastes make them superior as people compared to those who don't share the same interests.

Nobody cares, you're putting the biggest 360 game of the generation, and the biggest PS3 game of the generation against one of Nintendo's moderately big games.

I don't think Mario Kart Wii was a cash-in either. First off, it's a lot better than Double Dash and its cheap specialty power-ups. The game is almost like a Greatest Hits compilation... Drawing from the old games left and right and pulling the best features and tracks from each. Which is perfectly fine because there's not a lot of improvement needed in the MK series... It does what you expect it to and does it fairly well. It's not the greatest game ever but it's a lot of fun and that's all that I want from a MK game.

The biggest letdown to me are the graphics in MK Wii... Really, they needed to step it up. It's marginally better than Double Dash and that's pretty weak.

I still think Nintendo's online strategy is ridiculous and backwards but even I have to admit that adding online to this franchise turned it from "play for a month then trade it in" game to a keeper for the rest of the generation.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

Really the only ownage I saw was Wii outselling PS360's Christmas 2007 levels. If the Wii userbase ends up being 891705918075 billion, MKWii and even Carnival Games could outsell GTA4 with just 1% of the new ultra mega super-userbase buying these games.

I prefer Double Dash to MK Wii for the co-op and the special items actually, but MK Wii's online totally made it my favorite Mario Kart.

And if either game is a cash-in just for being a shiny hyped sequel, then they're both cash-ins. It's called Sequelitis, and every developer suffers from it, not just Nintendo.
