They sold 3-4 million ish as I recall. Very succesful games, but nothing compared to what it became. GTA 3 was essentially a complete reboot of the series and it was clearly a great idea. Whenever anyone mentions GTA they are clearly talking about the GTA 3 series, or now GTA 4.

PS3 fans constantly get banned for comments like this and then claim the mods are biased ... The ironic thing is that most of the posters who call the Wii "Gay" or childish are children.

mk wii and gta aren't even comparable. gta was released on two consoles so of course its going to sell more. but 1 mil opening week for mk is still very impressive.

don't about GTAIV (haven't played it) but marioKart is not as fun as I thought it would be.
My kids played it for couple of days and that's it. They want me to buy naruto for DS now.
Perhaps wii sells a lot of softwares cause players are done with their games so quickly.

Total Sales GTA: 5.9m
Total Sales MKart: 3.7m
Difference: 2.2m

Mario Kart sold 62.7% of GTA
GTA sold 159.4% Mario Kart , that is not double sales, nearly 1.5

And Mario Kart will have good legs, GTA too

sales of mario kart: +10 millions
sales of GTA: 15-17

 I think darkjonnyx is right,  GTA4 in the long run will get a little bit less than twice the sales of Mario Kart Wii. So, it's highly likely that Mario Kart will outsell the less performing of the 2 consoles. 

It's incorrect to say that GTA4 owned Mario Kart because both titles didn't have much influence of each other. Both did the best they ever did before. The Wii sold more hardware during the week of GTA's release which indicates one thing: Wii's demographic is (that is new market + nintendo fans + casual gamers) larger than the GTA4's demographic. 

I can't believe I'm asking this, but would there be an appropriate homophobic use of "gay"?

While I won't condemn this thread in itself as there is much to talk about, I don't see what of constructive relevance we can reap from such discussion that hasn't already been acquired in other topics, but let's humor the premise none the less. Yes GTAIV thoroughly trounced MKWII. But oddly enough the Wii not only still outsold the 360 and PS3 but broke records. It's a fickle market. Who knows what means what these days and in all honesty noses can be rubbed in "it" respectfully on both sides.

If the purpose of this thread is to ask why GTAIV sold more, then your answer is obvious, it's GTA. If the purpose of this thread is to ask why MKWii didn't sell more, then your answer is obvious, it's not GTA. If the purpose of this thread is to claim HD gaming domination, I think you're a bit premature.

That said, I'm not defending MKWii nor am I attacking GTAIV, I just have to ask, what were you hoping for specifically in terms of discussion?

1. Since when was a 1 week million seller fail?
2. Has any Mario Kart ever hit over 1.8 million in any region in it's first week, no!
3.GTA has a history of being top heavy, when the numbers come out next week I figure the drop off is above 90%.
4. GTA vs Wii Fit!? Are you guys insane!? It's already known Wiifit will sell over 8 million in the US alone, or 20%+ of the Wii user base.
5. You guys want to compare and compete, then compare GTA vs GTA for both platforms, understand what happened and dont let it slip past your blind fanboy rage. The PS3 GTA sold much better than the 360 when you consider the PS3 userbase, it mean's that peole are taking the Sony brand seriously as being worth 400 or whatever dollars for key games.

The tie in on the PS3 was much higher.

I don't want those gay bastards hitting on me. Seems appropriate and homophobic all in one.
