You expected what would have to be fourth on the list of Nintendo franchises to actually beat what was the mega-franchise of last generation?

The Mega franchise period.

haha...look at the sales histry for GTA series and Japan.  I love when people are wrong within the first few sentances of a post as I can stop reading the rest of the post

Wrong?

You should re-evaluate those sales figures.

The GTA series is relatively new to Japan, but has been building up a name for itself over time, with the recent games selling respectably.

There is no way it is going to beat Mario Kart Wii's JPN sales total though.

So despite the fact that Mario Kart Wii is available in all major regions now, and GTAIV is yet to hit Japan (where it will have strong if not amazing sales), it is clear that Mario Kart has taken a major beating.

1)

Worldwide, GTAIV (combined) sells close to twice as much in its first week on sale than Mario Kart's current total.

2)

In the US, the PS3 version of GTAIV alone sells more than Mario Kart Wii in the region, despite the fact that there are about 6 million more Wiis out there. 360 sales just blow it away.

3)

In Others, the PS3 version almost sells more in the first week than a full 4 weeks of Mario Kart Wii sales. This time with about 3 million more Wii owners out there.

Wow.

So did Nintendo's strategy of deliberately going almost head to head with the biggest HD mulitplatform game to date work?

Did the launch of Mario Kart Wii actually take gamers away from GTAIV, or would it have performed better if it were released during a less competitive period?

Is Mario Kart Wii supply constraint?

Thats actually an accurat statement,GTA being a western game sells great in Japan about 400k first week great.

See you are making excuses there...calling it a western game. Amazing sales would be 1 +million...but because its a western game 400K is ok... Monster Hunter was amazing few weeks ago. GTA:SA couldnt hit million copies on a system that sold 10X as much as ps3 and 360 combined.

You are really expecting amazing sales for gta4?

Tried to find Mk Wii for my nephew in the uk and get my own copy back. Highstreet stores have been saying that they will not have stock again until the 29th of may. I have been hearing this for over a week and a half.

400k (almost 500k for vice city) for previous installments is a respectable number for the game. I can see it selling more than that this time around. Disolitude maybe you should do research before you speak.

No..more of the same but seeing as western oriented games rarely make 100k in a lifetime,200k first week is pretty great if not amazing.

Steve Urkle: Last time I checked, Nintendo owns Mario Kart. Ha ha ha. *snort snort snort*

hmm, lets see...400k for a game sold on a platform that sold over 20 million around that time frame.

GTA4 is going on sale on 3.7 million consoles. You can do research all you want but common sense you will not find...

Also, 400K is one half of Army of 2 in USA alone btw...does that game gave "Amazing sales"?

You'll have to forgive them, not being "real gamers", Wii owners don't even know that they're supposed to rush to the stores on the day of release to get a game. They don't understand that it's important because .... because ....
Quick someone remind me why it's important to get a game on the first day; I forget.
