Forums - Sales Discussion - Yes, the Wii is competing with the 360 and PS3, and it's easy to prove it

It's very simple.

In the weeks where the PS360 beats the Wii, they are in direct competition.

In the weeks where the Wii beats the PS360, they are not in competition.

Once you accept this, it all makes sense.

Now that's a new one to add to my list.

@FishyJoe: You're right, maybe we'll just have to take it that way...

You know this whole Wii is not competing thing is completely insane. I have been gaming for about 2 decades now and in no time in the entire history of gaming has a console been considered not a competitor. This is like saying that the 3DO was not in the same market as the SNES because, the 3DO used CD for it's games and SNES used cartridges. They are in the same pool competing for the same consumer dollars. They share the same shelf space in stores. Where is the place where they are not in competition? Maybe I'm thinking way too rationally about this.

Remember your history or you are doomed to repeat it.

3- Games like MGS4, KZ2, LBP, GT5, FFXIII, FFXIIIv, R2 and etc. are not yet released.

Sorry, but you just making conclusions too early.
You just don`t think, that games above will have any BIG effect on sales of PS3.

Moreover, PS3 is ON track with PS2:

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=PS2®1=All&cons2=PS3®2=All&cons3=X360®3=All&weeks=100

For what reason you comapre sales in each region, when TOTAL sales matters. =)

I already said why per-territory is the correct way to go when comparing aligned launches. When a console is only being sold in one territory, customers from other territories aren't going to travel just to buy a console (with very very few exceptions).

Therefore, the market doesn't become magically global just by launching in one territory.

BUT developers starting creating games way BEFORE console got launched in every region. And GAMES all is matter. Because games make effect on hw sales.

I mean, if PS2 was launched in march 2000, and MGS2 came in November 2001 after 21 weeks since launch, IT DOESN`T matter, if PS2 was launched in USA only in October 200, because game was in developement since PS2 launch or even earlier.

Same for PS3, if it was launched in November 2006, and MGS4 came in June 2008 after 19 weeks since launch of PS3, it doesn`t matter that PS3 was launched in Europe only in march 2007.

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

We're talking about installed base, which shows us how customers are receiving the products. Your point may be correct but it's irrelevant in this context. The fair way to compare aligned launches is still to do it per-territory.

Let's take an extreme fictional example which illustrates my point - imagine there was a little island with 1000 inhabitants. The PS3 gets launched in that place first, while the 360 gets launched in Japan first, and vice-versa a few months later (you can replace the names of the consoles with whatever you want). What's going to happen to your global aligned launch comparison?

By the middle of March 2007 PS3 in others after (4 months) sold 30k.
You see? Months doesn`t matter in reality.

Now, in Europe, during this time PS2 had Christmas, that`s why it went ahead of PS3, but, after 6+ month PS3 also will have Christmas and definitely will go ahead of PS2 sales in Europe with aligned launch.

What conclusion you can make with aligning sales from launch in this region???

I dont know about anybody else,  i said i agree that its competing. and i bring up it doesn't matter cause people keep saying ps3 is doomed, thats its over. how is it over? there going for the same dollar, but not the same people. for the 100th time the majorty of the people that buy the wii dont care for the games ps3 has and what it has to offer, and ps3 gamers are not interested in wii games, im not. yes! the whole world knows the wii is selling, it doesn't matter to the ps3. the wii and ps3 has no game that each other has, how would they effect each other? games on ps3 people will buy cause thats what there used to, and its only on ps3, games for the wii the casuals and new gamers will try out cause the systems at a mass market price, and the games are different, and its something they never seen before( wii fit)..........go wii!

Finally a valid complaint... I should have mentioned this in the original post.

You're right that my comparison is slightly skewed in Europe due to quite different launch months, but the general conclusion is unaffected by this small skew. I didn't count the Gamecube which would reduce it (or even eliminate it, don't feel like checking now), and the other territories more than make up for it even without the Gamecube. Europe is definitely where the PS3 is doing best, and the Xbox 360 is doing pretty good compared to MS's last gen too.
