My point isn't that they aren't "Competing" please read the OP prorpley, my point is that they aren't [direct] competitors.

It makes sense seeing as 3 consoles that are supposedly directly competing in the same market are all performing well .

Cmon , even the Nintendo DS and the 360 are "competing" to an extent , I'm sure people have had to choose between the two in the past , that's the exact definition of competion.

No, they aren't competing 'to an extent'.

They competing, period. It's like saying an iPod doesn't compete with a surround sound system for a music lover's affection.

Dude what are you talking about ? the reason I say "to an extent" is because the compete to an "extent" , there is no direct competition. applying the same logic the Ipod is competing with TV's as they are both forms of entertainment , despite this being true this form of competiton has a neglible effect on sales. , no business would worry about this.

The Wii is competing with the others. For example, wouldn't u say Kia is competing with Mercedes? Both make cars so both are competing with each other - no matter the price/features

No, they are not. If Kia went out of business, Mercedes would not sell a single additional car. Same goes for Kia if Mercedes went out of business.

Can we get a one hour ban on everyone who does this crap? I see it more and more these days. Sorry, but your opinion does not end the discussion. It's amazing how arrogant some people seem to be.

Do you just mean those who do it to their own posts, or also those who reply that way?

Just wondering.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Lordthenight, I meant it as an innocent sarcasm, not actual ability of re-editing the thread headline (which would by nice though).

I guess if you are doing it to your own post to say "Sorry for the post, it was bad topic. Let' stop posting here and move on" it would be ok. I have never once seen it used that way. it's always used to say "Here is an irrefutable response to you. No one else after this will say anything more relevant. Thread closed."

Which is crap.

It's irrelevant that an IPod plays games, it's a music machine. In the public eye a cellphone isn't a gaming machine. There a clear divides in the minds of the public.

If say a parent goes to Best buy thinking "I'm going to buy a videogame console for my 17 year old" they don't look at the Iphone. They aren't going to choose between a PSP and a 360. Clearly one is a handheld gaming device and the other is a home console, and are seperated as such in the store. Conversely, they aren't going to the videogame section in best buy, see that the wii, PS3, and 360 are all right next to each other and say "I guess I'll choose between a 360 and a PS3, the wii just isn't a home console." For a consumer, they are choosing between the 3 current gen consoles that compete directly with one another for shelf space at stores that sell videogames.

Iphones don't compete with PSP and DS, you don't see them sold right next to actual hand hand gaming machines, and they don't compete for shelf space. A store doesn't decide how many Iphones to buy in relation to PSPs based on how they sell against one another, nor do they decide which will get more shelf space based on which is moving more software and making them a profit.

But that is exactly what happens with wii, PS3 and 360. They reside in the same "aisle" if you will at wal-mart, and the store managers are deciding how many PS3s to purchase in relation to wiis, and which one they are going to give the most shelf space, based on which one is moving the most hardware and software for their business. Thusly, directly competing.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

Yes it does compete directly. Business analysts who focus on the console market lump the Wii in there with the X360 and PS3. I have never seen a statistic with only the consoles from Sony en Microsoft.

To the media it's the same story. When reporting on the videogame-market and sales for instance they will always compare the main three boxes.

You see it here aswell. If the Wii wasn't directly competing, VGchartz would have a whole different section for the Wii.

Why would I need to re-name the thread ? I'm asking for the opinions of those who believe the Wii and PS3/360 are directly competing and then debating with them.

Use of authority is a perfectly valid means of debate. If everyone involved in the industry says they are competing, odds are there is a reason.
