" Hmm GTA IV or Wii-Fit , Tough choice...." Can't imagine to many people with that dilema.

I know I'd have no problem choosing between those two software titles. (I refuse to call Wii Fit a "game").

They target different audiences and I am just amused and honestly, a bit shocked to see so much buzz and glee from those who claim to be gamers here having a desire to have that software title.

I'd also like to see a follow up from people 6 months after it's launch to see who is still using it regularly. I can promise that you'd see far more people playing GTA4 after 6 months then you would Wii Fit.

game1 (gām)
n.
  1. An activity providing entertainment or amusement; a pastime: party games; word games.
    1. A competitive activity or sport in which players contend with each other according to a set of rules: the game of basketball; the game of gin rummy.

Oh yeah , sure Wii-Fit totaly isn't a game , it's a "Software title".

Way to be ignorant and subject your personal interests on the face of everyone else.

If we all thought like you, we'd all have the same username and avatar, etc...   Not everyone likes the same games you do.  Just check profiles.

I can actually. If you're interested in both games but don't have money for both. Also, considering the huge sales the games have, there's bound to be people wanting both. Anyway, it isn't really Wii Fit that's having a significant impact on the PS3/360, but more likely the mainstream perception that the Wii is one of the hot things to get just like the IPOD.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

And you aren't being ignorant with your personal interests of how Wii Fit is a game?  It's not a party game, it's a fitness tool that is a software title on the Wii.   I don't know about you, but if I were at a party the last thing I'd want to do is to work out.

Not everyone would like Wii-Fit and only those who are interested in using wii fit as a fitness tool are those who need to exercise, but could use that as a starting point to get into better shape.  You won't see Bodies By Chuck Norris from those using that.  The rest of the buzz around it is from the hardcore Nintendo faithful that will buy it just because it's made by nintendo and to help out sales numbers because they feel personally vested to buy everything that they release.

I don't buy every game on the 360 or PS3.  Lair was a giant stinking turd, even if it did have dragons, and I didn't buy it.

At least I'm not like the OP and stating how PS3 and 360 failed because Nintendo happened to ship a butt ton of units out the same week at Wii Kart and GTA4 happened to release.

If you really want to compare, then how come MK Wii didn't sell even half of what GTA4 did in its first week?  Both the PS3 and 360 doubled their recent average sales the past week, and this week it will be up above normal yearly averages.  How long that lasts, well, I don't know.   I've never gone off to claim the "end" of a consoles domination and even when I did make a prediction on the Wii for last week I was off, but put a huge disclaimer stating that they'd sell out of pretty much everything shipped and it all depended on how much they could stuff the sales channel.  That they did, I just underestimated how many units they could actually push out to the stores for one week.

White Knight Chronicles
Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm
Dragon Ball Z-Burst Limit
Tales of Vesperia
Tekken 6
Eternal Sonnata
Last Remnant
Resident Evil 5

All of these and plenty more are Japanese oriented games that Japananse gamers are waiting for inorder make that transition towards the PS3 whether big or small an of impact these are the games that sell in Japan but there has to be enough of these games for example the main reason last year not to own a PS3 was the lack of quality and well known games, same for Japan they usually gravitate toward good games look at Monster Hunter 2 and what it did for the PSP. Inorder to better understand the situation;look at the current lineup of games for the PS3 and you will notice that most of all the games are good but targeted toward a western market[Uncharted,Ratchet,COD,Heavenly Sword, etc]with DMC being the one japanese oriented game that sells well in Japan and is good.Saying that people will only buy a wii because its a one console territory is not logical reason and is just blowing off the PS3 for no logical reason when consumers usually follow the games not the trends no matter how true this trend was last gen.

Which brings up my next point, the PS2 was successful in Japan because of the array of games it offered,a collection unmatched by Nintendo last gen or this gen. While Nintendo continues to dominate a market with no competition[software] as of yet,it remains to be seen whether or not this trend will continue and whether or not the PS3 has a chance overthrow the wii.

Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII are one in the same. FF13 will move consoles but an FF spinoff is going to have little impact in the face of the leading title and will sell less.

Gran Turismo 5 will move some hardware but this is really a franchise that benefits from a larger userbase. The same applies to Metal Gear.

Naruto and Dragonball Z? Oh my.  Considering that this is the first time I've seen anyone claim that these properties were going to 'save' the PS3 in Japan I'm simply going to say that it's safe to assume that they won't. The PS3 must be really in a rut there if it's relying on licensed anime games to move hardware.

Tales of Vesperia - 360 games are supposed to sell PS3's now?

Tekken, really?

Eternal Sonata isn't a big property, it's a new IP. Everyone that wanted it already got it. White Knight Chronicles is in a similar new IP situation. Considering the original Dark Cloud bombed in Japan, I don't really know why everyone is so sure that Level 5 can move gangbusters in a similar position. Actually, this applies to The Last Remnant too.

Resident Evil's selling power has been greatly dimished in Japan over the years. Possibly because Capcom couldn't choose one platform to stick to.

Japan being a one console market is perfectly logical because it's factual. There will be no turnaround. Naruto is not going to save the day. You can deny this all you want, but sales paint a different story. Japanese gamers have never "waited" to make a transition, this is going under the assumption that they are brainless brand puppets, which they are not. This isn't going to change anytime.

@jjseth.

I don't care much about the GTAIV vs MKWii war. That was hardly the point of my post, now was it?

My point is you subjected your opinion as the only valid opinion any self worthy gamer should have and not every gamer thinks the way you do. Just because you fail to understand the interest the game has garnered from various types of gamers doesn't mean it's null and void as a game.

Not every gamer has an interest in GTAIV but does that mean there is something wrong with them as gamers?

You have an elitist mentality. You feel that if people don't game with the same ideals and subject matters that you do, they aren't "real" gamers. You further prove your ignorance by failing to grasp what Wii Fit is beyond the premise. Imperial gave a solid definition for game. Are you going to try to tell me that Merriam-Webster, the most trusted authority of definitions in the world, is incorrect on account of its level of physical interactivity?

Then you try to vindicate the sales and hype of Wii Fit by supposing every Wii gamer has a vested interest in all Nintendo published titles. I'll grant e they buy more from them as a publisher than the others but perhaps it has something to do with actually making a quality product.

Viper1, you sure are trying your best to invalidate what I said because it doesn't conform to your viewpoint.

Wii Fit is not a game. It's a fitness tool/device. If I have a bike with a computer attached to it, does that make it a game? No.... The computer element/software of it is to help encourage me to work out and continue to progress. It's not a game.

When I think of a game, it has a storyline, action that your character does to achieve a goal or end point of the game. Some are short, and some are longer. However, if I hit a magic mark in Wii Fit will I be congratulated for saving a princess/destroying the evil/beating people online? No... I won't.... It will be more of the same every single day and will not reward me with a in game prize... Sure, you may get in better shape and be more fit, but it won't give you what you need to be in shape like going to a gym will.

I wasn't claiming that my opinion is that of everyone, but it's a valid argument for many gamers who do not consider Wii Fit a game. There are many gamers who don't see it as a game and frankly are put off by the concept of it. I'm not saying that all gamers are fat and out of shape, just that their definition of gaming and exercising are completely different then what wii fit is.

Your bickering is not going to change my opinion of Wii Fit and really is a waste of your time to try to disprove it because you think everything Nintendo = Awesomeness no matter how lame it is.

The PS2 was successful in Japan long before any of the 'big' games came out. The PS2 sold 800k in it's first two days.

Thats probably because the PS2 was the only platform available.

This rigid definition of what constitutes a "real game" and who is a "real gamer" is exactly what has alienated a large group of people who like and play video games but aren't considered "real gamers" by people for whom gaming is something far more than just recreation.  If you want to know where Nintendo found such a large group of people to market their product to, you helped create it.

I personally think a real game is any game that a person enjoys even Wii Fit, and a real gamer should be anyone who enjoys and has an interest in electronic gaming, whatever games they play and whatever gizmo they use to play them on.

What would you set for your criteria for someone who aspires to be considered a real gamer? Games owned? Number of hours a week played?

Or do we have a real elite like the young man next door who has flunked out of college and lost two jobs because of the time we has spent playing WoW. He's now living back with his parents and doesn't understand why they won't support him so that we can play even more. That must be a real gamer because he certainly doesn't have a real life.

I request a link to that thread keeping track of all the Wii FUD fanboys talk. Those are the ones I remember:

1) Wii is selling nice, but it is a fad
2) The Wii bubble is about to burst
3) LOL Mini-games and soccer moms
4) Not enough good games
5) No good games from 3rd paties
6) 3rd parties do not sell on the Wii
7) Well, they sell better on the HD consoles
8) PS3/360/PC are a single platform, so it would be wise to avoid the Wii
9) GTA 4 will critically hurt the Wii
10) GTA will cause a tiny crack in the Wii`s armor
11) Wii Fit is an insult to true gamers
12) It is not even in the same market, Wii Sports is enough for them
