Wow, there are a lot of misconceptions in this thread.
1. "they eat a lot" / "they have no self-control" - how the hell do you know? Different people have different biological rhythms. You can take any two people, have them eat exactly the same things in the same amounts, and different amounts of fat will be added to their bodies. A friend of mine growing up had several brothers, ate less than any of them, yet was heavier than any of them, for example. So we should all realize that people are different and not to judge them by a difference of physical appearance.
2. "obesity is unhealthy" - only if you are vegging out on the couch and not in good shape. There are people who are naturally bigger yet are in excellent respiratory shape. Besides, someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger is considered "obese" if you pay attention to something like BMI, which is deeply flawed.
3. "it's nature" that society looks down on fat people - on the contrary, during many periods of history society favored fatter people. You only think this because the current societal trend is toward 80-pound women with their ribs sticking out as the models.
A really good question is why would someone consider someone who is anorexic or bulimic attractive as compared to someone slightly "overweight." These eating disorders are just as bad (and as prevalent) as obesity, and more prevalent in young women. I have a cousin who is afflicted and it is the most horrible, horrible thing to see her life so affected from something that was helped to occur by our society's insane obsession with everything ultra-thin.
