Forums - Sony - Sony should stop selling the ps2

No they shouldn't kill the ps2. They should cut the price of this console. In europe, I think it must be around 150 euros with one or two games, that's way too expensive. Now what they have to do, it's a bundle with a ps2 and two amazing games such as god of war 2 and FFXII for only 80€, that would boost the ps2, and would be great for "poor" buyers (students, children, ...).

Moreover, don't think that killing the ps2 will increase ps3 sales, they don't play in the same league!

SNES is the best console of all time. Why quit when it sells so well? The SNES pwns your soul.

Fixed.

Except we're not talking about the SNES. There was nothing to call for it in the slightest except fan opinion.

But really, I don't care what people think. Sony won't stop making the PS2, because people are still developing games for it. Should they stop so one of their competitors can get a slightly better Madden game? No, in fact, they should use the PS2 as a device to ruin Wii games.

It's genius.

You're right, with these ports to Wii the PS2 is like this nagging disease from last gen that keeps smacking Wii in the face.

@Manuelf  I think that might be  the first time somebody "fixed" one of my posts. I'm honored.  My post was correct to begin with, but still, thanks for the sentiment.

With the PS3 launch looming, Japanese electronics giant shuts down production of the console that brought it to the industry in the first place.

Production run

Lasting over 11 years, the PlayStation enjoyed one of the longest production runs in the video game industry. On March 23, 2006, Sony announced the end of production.

If sony was to stop selling the ps2 the 120 million people who own it would most likley go out and but a ps3 because they have trust in them...... whad u think?

People who DONT have ps2s will mostly be the ones buying ps2s, so to stop selling the console wouldn't necessarily create new PS3 sales from the ps2 fanbase.  A price drop would be a big driver.  This holidays we'll see a huge spike/shift anyway.

PS2 owners are a massive group like the baby boomers, and they're gonna retire over the next couple years: to the PS3.

Still, PS2 makes a lot of money still, so there's no reason to stop it.  Note: if Sony cared so much about PS3 passing PS2 eventually, they could do something about it by stopping PS2 sales.  They aren't that childish, though.  It's about $$$ and the game division is historically very much in the black except during transition years.

How would not selling new PS2's effect the 120 million who ALREADY HAVE PS2's???

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

Too bad its DVD drive does.  ^_^

Honestly though, I don't see dropping the PS2 product line as beneficial to Sony.

Ps2 sales don't hurt the Ps3 since they removed the emotion engine. It's also a good stream of revenues that can help absorb the losses from the PS3 more easily. It also encourages the developers to give the ps2 a port for multiplatform games which also benefits Sony through royalties. That's why I believe Sony must not kill the PS2.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

Yeah... PS2 sales are nothing but good for Sony. They aren't stealing sales directly from the PS3, and the PS2's existence does a lot to hinder the competition. Since people who don't necessarily care about gaming have an option that's half the cost of a Wii and 1/3 the cost of a 360, they will probably pick that up. Some people honestly don't mind being a generation behind, which is why the Wii isn't suffering much despite it not being significantly more powerful than last gen's systems.

You do not have the right to never be offended.
