That's not true.  I'd wager lots of those PS2's are replacements of 8 year old systems that have died and/or second systems to play the huge back catalog.

Sony's continued sales of PS2 is a godsend to them in that it is helping defray the massive losses they took initially on the PS3.   That first year of craptacular sales of PS3 would've hurt a WHOLE lot more if they hadn't had the basically free money flowing in from continued sales of PS2.

Sony's response to the complaint about the 40Gb PS3 not having backwards compatability was that you could buy a PS2 on the side with your PS3 and have it still be cheaper than the original BC versions.

Stopping PS2 sales would really be unfortunate. 

It's better to sell the PS2, because it delays going next-gen for some people. Xbox 360 Arcade would be the first choice, if the PS2 is no more. I believe the PS2 saves the PS3. It's very likely the PS2 will still be around for a few more years. It can obtain exclusives from PSP and thx to the Wii there is still third party support. BTW COD5 is coming to PS2.

yea thay wont stop the ps2 atleats not until the ps3 gains more sales and everyone starts buying the sp3 untils its a sure thing right now if thay stoped selling ps3 it would make people buy a 360 wii or ps3

later on in a year or 2 only ps3 and wii will be there choices and the 360 would be the dumb choice that no one would chosse in a few years lol

and the ps2 is makeing cash the ps3 is losseing cash

if thay stoped makeing the ps2 more people would buyt he ps3 and thay would losse even more cash

so no deal the ps2 stays a few more years when the ps3 is haveing alot more sales and makes atleast 50-75$ a system

there not going to stop it anytime soon.  They stopped making ps1's in march of 2006

It's free profit. Every PS2 sold has to make an insane amount of profit, since they've adjusted the innards like three times already on the slim, and haven't price dropped in a minute.

Why cut out profit? This [and the PSP] are what are supplementing selling the PS3 at a loss for now, since it's software isn't enough to make up for that... yet. But expect a price drop for the PS2 this fall/winter, when PS3 starts being sold at a profit, or breaking even (If there is no price drop), and software sales won't have to make up for selling their system at a loss.

After it reaches 99 bucks, death will quickly ensue within 24 months, but the 99 price point will net some good PS2 sales this chrismas, and well needed revenue/profit.
