Wider entertainment market is the real target for PS3, says SCE president

Forget Microsoft and Nintendo – PS3’s content can take on movies, TV and the web in the battle for the wider entertainment space.

That was the message from SCE president Kaz Hirai as he spoke to MCV at this week’s PlayStation Day, at which the platform holder revealed a string of triple-A titles and online community projects.

After SCEE president David Reeves confidently emphasised that PS3 had now overtaken its main rival Xbox 360 in SCEE territories with five million sales since its launch, Hirai sat down with MCV to elaborate further on Sony’s vision for PS3.

“I think that PS3, PS2 and PSP are all entertainment platforms so I feel that our competition is not Microsoft or Nintendo, but basically any form of entertainment that is competing for the consumers’ attention,” said Hirai.

“So we need to make sure we offer the most compelling entertainment – not videogame entertainment but in entertainment in general. I can’t speak for their strategy but I like to think that we’ve got a very well balanced portfolio with PS3, PSP and you can’t discount the PS2.”

They never stop to amaze

eh... anytime they talk about how they aren't focusing on gaming it makes me uneasy.  Cause all I care about is games. 

That's the one positive of Nintendo. They just want to make games.

It's true. You never compete with people you're losing to. Fact.

Ah, so it's an entertainment platform! And that's why it's getting it's ass handed to it (for the most part) in two forms by lowly 'video game systems'

To be fair... I think he meant they were competing with more then Nintendo and 360.

Like standalone blu-ray players whose ass they're kicking hard.  Of course that'd also put them in compeition with DVDs... which ain't doing that well... and the internet.  No way to beat that.

yes the ps3 is competing with other entertainment mediums, but their direct competition is still nintendo and mocrosoft.

I also don't understand this new Sony strategy. Since when has a loss leading HW product been used to push entertainment products? The only reason why gaming console models are loss leading is because the most profit is in software, since when is selling an underpriced blu-ray/internet browser/etc. product?
