Wii Fit on course to break sales records

The Wii Fit is poised to become the biggest selling home fitness device ever seen, retailers have claimed.

Designers at Nintendo have been "amazed" at the popularity of the game, which involves balancing, stretching, aerobic exercise and even yoga.

In just two weeks since its launch on April 25 it has sold 338,000 units, according to figures from Chart-Track, the official body that monitors computer games sales.

However, high street retailers expect the game’s popularity to outperform even traditional home exercise devices like exercise bikes, cross trainers and even celebrity-endorsed exercise DVDs.

Jim Batchelor, commercial director at Woolworths, said: "The popularity of Wii Fit is phenomenal and we believe it will only get bigger as more and more people discover it.

"It has already become the fastest-selling home fitness tool and we expect it to surpass the sales of any fitness DVD or piece of fitness equipment that Woolies has ever sold."

The initial figures were enough to make it the eighth-best launch in computer history but its appeal is wider than just those in the gaming world.

Dawn Paine, marketing director of Nintendo UK, said: "We’ve been amazed by the different types of people that have purchased Wii Fit, many of whom are people that have literally never played a video game in their life."

Jim Clark, senior technology analyst at consumer behaviour experts Mintel, said: "What the Wii Fit does is allow you to start getting into exercise without having to get over what is, to some, the daunting barrier of exercising in public with strangers, whether that’s an aerobics class or a dip in a pool."

Still waiting here in NA.

Just finished my first *real* session with the game tonight. It really is amazing - unlike anything I have ever seen or played before.

Still not sure if its going to be as big as WiiSports+Wiimote combination - but maybe it will exceed it. Either way, it targets a completely different crowd.

Love the skiing, I suck at HulaHoop "(tm)", good at a couple of the Yoga exercises, but my balance is generally piss-weak. I genuinely feel like I have been at the gym for an hour.

...

Wish it had:
- more comparison functionality (i.e. show all your initial weights or BMIs together)
- online functionality (its not "action", be the perfect WiiConnect title to share data with friends online)
- "circuit mode" - where you can put together your own set of exercises, and the game runs you through them each session.

Just wait until this thing hits the US market...

Nintendo did say they were working on DLC for Wii Fit, so the current program is only like a starter pack. EA just announced they are working on a fitness game for the balance board, so that might provide some variety as well.

The VGC numbers seem to be very accurate. If the UK represents roughly 1/3 of others sales, then the sales are just about dead on.

it is selling like everyone thought it would...rather well

Sounds like a circuit mode would be a good idea. On X-Play, Nintendo made Adam Sessler do a series of excercises before it would get to any of the "games". He was whiny about it, but it makes sense.

I'm excited about both the fitness aspect and games. How much of Wii-Fit is playable at start and how much has to be unlocked?

Are there games that will take a lot of work to unlock?

Time to dig up the Wii Fit Hit or Miss thread!!

Signature goes here!

Chart-Track said it dropped 58% week 2, which means it sold 238k week one, and 100k week2.

WiiFit sales = Wii sales

Wii sales = supply.

That's going to explain it being the first software (granted packaged) that has the spike line graphs with very high highs and understandable lows.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

I am sure week 1 will not come close, but I wonder by end of 08, how Wii Fit sales will compare to GTA IV sales.......
