Forums - Microsoft - In defense of Microsoft: A response to DMeisterJ

I have no problem with Wii-fans. They are welcome with their arguments.

Yes, it is a war, and it is between MS and Sony.

1. In the end of this gen, in 2011-12, there will be 50 million X360s sold and 60 million PS3s. That's a huge win for MS compared to 24 mill Xbox vs 115 mill PS2 in last gen. -You have no solid proof that those numbers will end up the way they are so that statement is disregarded.

This is market analysis site with predictions as a basic method and ingredient for discussion and speculation. Depending on where you set the ending of this gen (2011 or 2012) you have the best regarded authorative analysts of this site (like TheSource) having near consensus opinion that the X360 will land at 40-50 mill and the PS3 at around 55-70 mill. I have strong arguments that the numbers will be 50 mill X360 and PS3 60 mill in Oct 2011 when the XBOX 3 will be released. So my statements are valid indeed.

Oh? what was the consensus of the PS3 during it's first year? Or the Wii before launch? Predictions are educated guesses. Do not count it as fact. The market is not predicible, people can only adjust based on the current situation until a flop or phenomenon happens. I've been doing stocks for years, this is basic stuff.

2. Yes, the X360 is profitable now. The last 2 Q reports show that, and it will continue. Xbox360 is profitable for NOW, yet still has a very very long way to go to even make back the money it costs to design, manufacture and market the 360 alone.

Yes, every business is about the future. Same if you own stocks. Past losses are history, you never gain those money back. Whats important is current and future profits.

Part losses are history, but if there's no profit, that certain division or business will crumble, it's called debt. Businesses need to get out of it, if they are in it.

3. I didn't mean hardware reliability. I meant that MS in the eyes of consumers is now a reliable and established player in the console business. Reliable in the sense that you know MS will stay in this business and offer the first machine in every gen. If you want to jump on next gen early, you'll know MS will be there for you. Ironically they will tell 360 owners to F off and spend hundreds to buy a newer console with less games, just like Xbox1 owners... yeah, Microsoft will be there for you alright.

MS will not make same mistake as in last gen, when they stopped supporting and manufactoring the Xbox. The Xbox360 will live past Oct 2011 when XBOX 3 comes out. And there is nothing wrong with being first in a gen, and having few games at launch applies to everyone (remember the PS3 had only 12 or so titles at launch despite the push back in time). There are 10 million hardcore tech-loving gamers out there that can't wait to get their hands on the new superb machine.

Right so, Microsoft will make another console spend buck loads in losses while building the most high end console ever created atleast one year before everyone, spend some more billions marketing it while Sony profits off PS3 hardware and software.

4. "Cool" matters because it has to do with the marketing aspects in this business. Just listen to Kaz Hirai and his homeboys over the years. Just look at the MTV inspired Sony commercials over the years. People hate MS, yes, but X360 is considered to be a great brand now. Nowadays even thugs think X360 is the true shit. Thugs steal more PS3s than Xbox360, read the news. Even thugs still think of the PS3 as the system to get....err steal.

Yes, maybe thugs still think the PS3 is slightly hotter than the X360. That is not the point. If you go to your hair saloon you hear thugs speak X360 as much as PS3. However you measure it, the X360 is roughly as hip or cool as the Playstation brand today in the mindset of people.

I don't think so. As a matter of fact, the majority of the people that i talk to don't even know what a xbox360 is nor do they have interest in a PS3. The "hip" console now is the Wii, but the Playstation Brand is still much more popular than the 360, you can't just discount the PSP and PS2 as non playstation brand just because the PS3 is out.

5. More games are released for the X360 than for any other console. At least more than to the PS3. Devs love the X360. This may be the only thing that is ture.

6. The trend is Xbox is in an upward spiral (24 mill--->50 mill) while PS is going downwards (115 mill--->60 mill). In next gen Xbox 3 will outsell the PS4, going by trends. Too bad the market does not work this way, nor is that way to determine how market trends in the first place. Another irrelevent comment.

You know very well that it has been a problem for Sony that they were late to this gen, and probably will be late to next gen, and that it's MS's main advantage to be first in the gen. Everything we today know, points to the fact that XBOX will keep catching up on Sony in the future. The EU will be next gens main battlefield.

I disagree again. The problem with Sony wasn't that they were late in this gen. The problem was that the initial marketing was garbage and the price was far too high while not having enough to warrant the extra hundreds of dollars for spending past the competition. As for the Xbox catching up.... have you been looking at the weekly charts? the PS3 has been catching up to the 360 for about half a year now.

.

Please, Slimebeast. Leave the Microsoft defense to Starcraft.

VGChartz has not so many Xbox-fans as we should. I don't know why. So we need everyone we can get and to unite and help each other against the forces of Sony

Wouldn't that be microsoft's fault for not pushing the "hipness" of their brand?

1. Okay, estimations change by time, and they aren't facts. I agree. But it's the only thing we got. Let's not call my numbers (50 mill X360 and 60 mill PS3) facts, let's call them my opinion.

2. MS Entertainment division will survive if it continues to show profit. You know that too.

3. So far Sony has lost money on PS3 like MS has on X360. Your argument sucks. Being first in a gen rocks.

4. Okay, Wii is number one. I never disputed that. And yes Playstation as a brand is still bigger than Xbox thanks to the PSPS and overlap from PS2 into this gen, but if you pick out PS3 (which is the Playstation representative of this gen) and match it against the X360 the PR strength or "hipness" factor is about equal.

6. So Sony messed up pricing and marketing? Yeah, I know too that Sony sucks. Yet no matter how you spin things MS and XBOX will most likely use the early gen advantage in next gen. Yes, the PS3 is catching up the X360 currently, but fact is that the X360 has sold 18.7 million consoles and the PS3 only 12.4 million. So what do you say to that? Epic fail for the PS3. My argument was about MS catching up generation for generation, and that's something no one can deny.

Yes, MS hasn't been as good as Sony as promoting the "hipness" factor of Xbox compared to PS (and probably have less cost for advertising than Sony). But apparently MS have a different strategy. To let the games talk for themselves.

Sony fanboys probably have nothing to do but to hang around forums, while X360 fans are busy gaming.

If you can get all consoles why not?

I actually read the whole thread... This is stuff I ALREADY KNEW, but xbox users have to keep defending this point of view because sony fanboys ignore the truth and are in denial that the playstation brand is slowly shriveling up, while the xbox brand is growing.

I didn't mean it isn't strong.. just that it isn't as strong as it used to be.  And well, the xbox is doing alot better than it used to...  I'm glad you didn't decide to slaughter me.

it's not as strong as it used to be, but it's not dying either. the xbox brand has got a lot stronger, but it's not as strong as the ps brand. no way.
