I was thinking I'd compare the 2 the biggest game launches of this generation thus far. I know Japan GTA4 sales aren’t in yet but I doubt it will do more than 100K combined due to low hardware sales and lack of popularity.
GTA4:
GTA4 launched on 2 consoles selling 5,902,098 according to VGChartz. These 2 consoles have a userbase of 31,080,000 consoles. Therefore the attach rate for GTA4 is 18.9%...meaning that 18.9% of people that could buy GTA4 actually bought it.
Xbox 360 attach rate for GTA4 is 17.6%; PS3 attach rate is 21.1%.
66% more 360's were sold the week of GTA4 launch compared to previous week. 84% more ps3's...
Halo 3:
Halo 3 launched with 3,788,992 on 11,921,934 available Xbox360 consoles. This works out to attach rate or 31.8%.
39% more 360's were sold the week of Halo 3's launch compared to previous week.
Conclusion:
Comparing the 2 games, GTA4 is actually a bigger system seller for the 360 despite being multiplatform, however halo 3 was the must play game of the generation thus far as the higher attach rate indicates. Think about it...that is almost 1 in 3 console owners buying it first week.
