Forums - Gaming - 20 Exclusives for the PSP this year - Read on (and see why you need a PSP)

Crush (Available Now)

Trapped in a life most difficult, our pyjama-clad hero has found himself tormented by worry
and mental strife. He's a nervous wreck, plagued by sleepless nights that leave him too tired
to turn his life around. A good night's shuteye has become as elusive as a dream.
But it is in a bizarre, dreamy vision that our unlikely adventurer is given one last hope; a
very strange opportunity to sort through the wreckage of his mind and restore his sanity,
along with his sleep.

Puzzle your way across 40 brain-twisting levels, exploiting a brilliantly surreal ability to switch
perspectives from 3D to 2D to conquer your challenges. Changing your perspective on things
will do more than alter your view; shift platforms and objects, activate machinery, cause
immense chain reactions in the environment and overcome your enemies - it's all in the
power of perspective.

Driver 76 (Available Now)

Faithful to the brand spirit, Driver 76 is an action driving game that features Hollywood-style
car chases while also letting the player experience the open environment on foot. The game
thrusts the player into the heart of the 1970s, through 27 missions divided into six main
plots. Players can take side jobs, earning cash that can be used to modify their rides. Driver
76 also offers an extensive multiplayer mode and a host of mini-games ranging from street
races to all out carnage in Destruction Derby mode.

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (Available Now)

Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters has most of the basic gameplay elements from the other
Ratchet and Clank games. The weapons are similar from previous games in the series
except for the RYNO. Weapons can gain experience, and mods that are similar to the ones in
Gladiator can be purchased for weapons. Several locked doors require Ratchet to use a
shrink ray and then complete a "grind lock" course, dodging mines on the rails and hitting
switches with your wrench to safely pass through doors.

Through the game, Ratchet will collect armor pieces for four different sets of armor, including
the two secret sets in "challenge mode". While Ratchet can mix and match any of the four
parts (helmet, body armor, gloves and boots) between any of the sets of armor, collecting
and wearing each piece of armor in a set gives Ratchet an additional advantage; for
example, using the full Wildfire suit, Ratchet's wrench will set his enemies on fire for
additional damage including the additional feature of 28% less damage taken.

Mini-games include skyboard races, demolition matches with clank vehicles, a basketball-like
robot throwingcompetition, and a robot control game very much like in concept to Lemmings.

Earthworm Jim (June 2007)

Earthworm Jim PSP (working title) is an entirely new game based on the original Earthworm
Jim game for Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. It will be a retelling of the original
Earthworm Jim game, but neither a port nor a remake. So far, there has been a level
resembling "New Junk City" confirmed, as well as a level called "The Birds and the Bees",
chronicling a war between the two factions. Jim also has new moves, including "rocket boots"
and the "Battery of the Gods", a power-up which sends Jim into a "super mode", in which he
can fly, is invulnerable, and can execute powerful melee combos. It is being developed by
Shiny Entertainment, the team behind the original 2D games, and published by Atari. The
game will have multiplayer support, where two players will be able to compete with each
other for high scores. There will be new characters as well. The only one confirmed so far is
"Tapeworm Slim", whose role in the game is secret. The game's 12 levels will contain plenty
of secrets and different types of game play.

PaRappa the Rapper (July 2007)

PaRappa the Rapper is a rhythm video game produced by Sony for the PlayStation Portable.
It is a remake of the original PaRappa the Rapper for the PlayStation developed by Masaya
Matsuura's NanaOn-Sha company. The game has been announced to have multiple new
features, including wireless play. One can also download 5 new levels made specifically for
the remake.

The U.S. version of the game will be a remake of the original with the ability to play up to
three other people head-to-head in ad-hoc match-ups, wirelessly share a demo level and
download eight additional playable remixes.

Dungeons & Dragons Tactics (July 2007)

Dungeons & Dragons Tactics is an upcoming turn-based strategy game currently in
development for the PlayStation Portable handheld video game console. It is a spinoff of the
popular Dungeons & Dragons series and is strictly based on the Dungeons & Dragons 3.5
Edition rule set.

The game will feature the core classes from the D&D rulebook: the Barbarian, Bard, Cleric,
Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, and Wizard. The game will also
feature 2 non-core classes, the Psion and Psychic Warrior. A full set of character generation
rules permit players to create their own characters, or use those pre-generated characters
that can be found in a 'character library'.

In the campaign game, players take the role of a character caught in an epic contest
between two dragons competing for godhood. The player can take the path to good or evil.
Certain quests can be completed depending on which path you take. There are over forty
missions in the game, though the player will experience less than this, depending on their
path.

Adventures take place on a grid in a high-fidelity recreation of the combat rules from
Dungeons and Dragons. The game will feature multiplayer wireless play with up to six
players, as well as deathmatch and co-op mode.

Jeanne d'Arc (August 2007)

Jeanne D'Arc is a tactical RPG game loosely based on a French historical figure, who we
probably know better as Joan of Arc. She lived in the early 15th century and rose to
prominence as the figurehead for France's revival in the Hundred Years' War with the English.
She was only 17 at the time, and died at 19, but had made enough impact to later be made a
saint. However, the PlayStation Portable game bearing her name deviates a fair bit from
what the history books tell us, putting her into more of a fantasy setting.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (August 2007)

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is a PlayStation Portable video game and sequel to Monster
Hunter Freedom, largely based on its PlayStation 2 predecessor Monster Hunter 2, which was
never released outside of Japan.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is not a port of Monster Hunter 2 but instead a portable update of
the Monster Hunter series. New features have been added while others were removed to
make the game appropriate for its portable platform. It is currently slated for release in the
USA in September. It's Japanese counterpart is called Monster Hunter Portable 2nd.

FFVII: Crisis Core (September 2007)

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, is an action role-playing game being developed by Square
Enix for the PlayStation Portable. The game is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII and is also the
fourth entry to the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII series, which also includes the games
Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII and Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, as well as the CGI
movie Final Fantasy VII Advent Children and the anime, Last Order: Final Fantasy VII.
Production is being overseen by Yoshinori Kitase, the director of the original Final Fantasy
VII, with Hajime Tabata as the game's director and Tetsuya Nomura as the game's character
designer.

The game will mainly focus around Zack Fair, a 1st Class SOLDIER and Cloud Strife while he
is a lowly Shinra Guard. Another character also present in the game is Aerith Gainsborough
as she features in the trailer of the game. This game appears to take place around the
events of Nibelheim outlined in Last Order: Final Fantasy VII.

Dead Head Fred (September 2007)

Fred Neuman, private eye and protagonist of the game, finds himself one day without his
head after being resurrected after a strange scientific experiment. Left without his memory
and searching for revenge, Fred begins tracking down suspects, fighting monstrosities (other
than himself) and solving the mystery of the town's seamy degradation and, of course, his
lost head.

Wipeout Pulse (September 2007)

Wipeout Pulse is an upcoming video game for the Sony PlayStation Portable, announced on
27th March 2007. It is slated for release in September 2007. The game is set in 2207.

  • Licensed music from Mason, Loco Dice and Stanton Warriors.
  • Multiplayer via Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure.
  • Eight new teams, including “EG-X”.

  • Custom soundtracks allow playback of MP3s stored on Memory Stick.
  • Photo Mode captures in-game screenshots.
  • Like Wipeout Pure, the game will feature downloadable content, such as new tracks and songs, immediately after release.
  • Includes all the original game modes of WipEout Pure.
  • Extra game modes include: Head to Head, Speed Lap, and Eliminator.
  • 3 Brand New Weapons with disrupter weapon removed.
  • Zone mode will now be playable on the normal tracks instead made for tracks.

Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles (September 2007)

Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles is a Playstation Portable game in the popular
Castlevania series of games by Konami. The game is essentially a remake of Akumajou
Dracula X: Chi no Rondo with 3D graphics, but it still retains the 2D gameplay mechanics.
The game will also include the original Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo as well as a port
of the PlayStation game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The planned release date for
the game is sometime in the fall of 2007.

Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles will represent the first time that Akumajou Dracula X:
Chi no Rondo will be officially released outside of Japan, barring the SNES remake. While the
original Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo featured anime style artwork, Castlevania: The
Dracula X Chronicles will feature new character designs by Castlevania: Symphony of the
Night character designer Ayami Kojima.

Silent Hill Origins (October 2007)

You will be Travis O'Grady, a trucker who has been described by the game's producers as
having a "troubled past" which the player will have to resolve during the course of the game.
O'Grady is driving through Silent Hill when his truck is stopped by what appears to an
apparition of Alessa Gillespie. He follows her to a burning house, where he rescues a
severely burned girl presumed to be Alessa herself. He later attempts to find the girl in a
hospital, but instead is confronted by nurse monsters.

The game will be a prequel to the first Silent Hill game, and the characters Alessa, Dahlia,
Lisa Garland and Dr. Kaufmann are confirmed to appear.

Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow (October 2007)

This game finds Gabe Logan searching for Lian Xing, who maybe in danger, or a double
agent. Now Gabe must search the globe in serch of her, but with a government official,
Robert Cordell, shutting down the IPCA under presidential powers, and Logan in the eyes of
an assassin, this maybe his biggest mission yet.

Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron (October 2007)

Renegade Squadron will include several new features, including support for 16 player
infrastructure online play, (8 person support for AD Hoc) and customizable heroes. Lucas
Arts has stated that over 1 million different customizable options will be present, and that no
two rebels of the same exact stature will ever lay eyes on each other. Some features are:
Hero Capture the Flag, ability to enter Capital Ships, and online leaderboards. You are also
able to create your own character with credits so you can buy changes such as weapons,
species, speed, agility,and strength.

SOCOM Tactical Strike (October 2007)

SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike is the third hand held game in the SOCOM series.
In Tactical Strike you are in command of four soldiers. Unlike previous games in the series,
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation will be
developed by Slant Six instead of Zipper Interactive.

FF Tactics: The Lion War (October 2007)

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War is a strategy-based console role-playing game developed
and published by Square Enix for the Sony PlayStation Portable handheld game console. The
game is an updated version of Final Fantasy Tactics for the PlayStation video game console.

SWAT: Target Liberty (November 2007)

What can we expect? Well, SWAT: Target Liberty is more centered on arcade stylings than a
straight-out tactical shooter (unlike its big brothers on the PC). The game will take players on
an adventure written by Scott Rosenbaum (The Shield) about a New York SWAT team led by
Kurt Wolfe. Wolfe gets to choose two team members to take with him on missions. The game
includes twelve missions and players will go and thwart the evil plans of a terrorist group.
The title looks very promising and some people are starting to compare it to Killzone.

God of War: Chains of Olympus (2007)

God of War: Chains of Olympus is an upcoming release in the God of War video game series,
designed specificially for the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld gaming system. It is
expected to be released sometime in 2007, and will be the second project developed for the
PSP by Ready at Dawn, the same team responsible for Daxter, another handheld spin-off of
a console series.

FF: Dissidia (2007)

Dissidia: Final Fantasy is an action game currently in development by Square Enix for the
PlayStation Portable as part of the campaign of the Final Fantasy series 20th anniversary.
Complete information on the game is set to be released during the "Square Enix Party" event
of May 2007. It is unknown if the game will be released outside of Japan, although the
trademark Dissidia was registered by Square Enix in North America on April 6, 2007.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy's genre has been described as "dramatic progressive action" and its
graphics will be in three dimensions. The game will reunite characters from other installments
of the Final Fantasy series, including a Warrior of Light and Garland from the first game,
Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII, and Zidane Tribal and Kuja from Final Fantasy IX. Chaos
will make an appearance as the god of darkness, while a new character, Cosmos, will appear
as the goddess of light. Recent scans released in Japanese magazines have stated that the
game will have a storyline that requires playing through all of the characters to complete.
The game will have wireless, though only one-on-one gameplay will be available. There will
be a minimum of ten main characters (Not including their villain counterparts) including the
aboved mentioned. Hidden characters may be possible. Characters can gain customisable
equipment. Tetsuya Nomura is responsible for the character designs.

Really like the list, there are at least 8 games that I am seriously considering getting on the PSP that are coming out this year and they are all on that list:

GoW, FF VII:CC, FF:D, Castlevania, Crush, FFT, Jean D'Arc, Monster Hunter Freedom 2 and maybe Silent Hill.

Edit: Also Parappa the Rapper.

lol 2nd Edit: Also Socom, forgot to mention that.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

Question is, how many of those exclusives will be good? Wow, some of the graphics on those games look really, really good. Others look kind of bad. I guess maybe some of the developers did fail on the Playstation Portable.

You could say that about any game that comes out on any platform.  The graphics in most of the shots look great...I'm not sure what games you think have bad graphics?

Well, 3 have been released so far: Crush, Driver 76 and Ratchet & Clank Size Matters. Driver 76 has had mediocre reviews while the other 2 have had really good ratings.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 has done so well in Japan and has been rated very well as well.

Crisis Core and Dissidia would have to be disasters to fail; Wipeout will be popular like they all are; Silent Hill Origins is shaping up really nicely, Syphon Filter and God of War will be a undoubted success

I reckon at least 10 of the 20 titles will be 8/10 at least.

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

Crush looks astonishing; bright colors, and crisp textures.

Driver 76 looks good; Realistic graphics, but with jagged edges.
Ratchet and Clank Size Matters looks good; Graphics are a little bit dull, and also show some jagged edges.
Earthworm Jim looks good; Graphics are crisp. However, it looks more like a 2D game than a 3D game.
Parappa the Rapper looks very awful; Graphics could have been far better. Looks like a bad cartoon drawing.
Dungeons and Dragons doesn't look that good; Graphics aren't solid enough. More like Sonic 3D Blast rather than Super Mario 64.
Jeanne d'Arc looks descent. Maybe a little bit worse; Nothing to wow you over.
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is slighty below average; Graphics are too blurry.
FFVll: Crisis Core looks "okay"; Still, nothing to wow you over.
Dead Head Fred looks descent; Extremely mediocre.
Wipeout Pulse looks too realistic; Solid, crisp, beautiful textures. This looks fantastic.
Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles looks horrible; Sorry, is this for Super Nintendo, or Playstation Portable?
Silent Hill Origins; Far too grainy. Jagged edges. As if portrayed from an old, grainy T.V., or what you get when you film in dim light.
Syphon Filter; Logan's Shadow looks kind of bad; Dull, boring, and repetitive graphics.
Star Wars Battlefront; Renegade Squadron is sharp, clean, but dull; And I thought Sphon Filter looked boring. These have to be the most boring graphics I've ever seen. However, what he have to look at is clean, and pure.
SOCOM Tactical Strike looks mediocre; Nice, descent graphics. That's all I can say.
FF Tactics: The Lion War looks bad; Too simple. Too 2D. Too Super Nintendo. Not enough oomph.
SWAT: Target Liberty looks below average; Looks okay. Looks more like an old PC game.
God of War; Chains of Olympus looks good; Smooth, crisp, and beautifully textured. However, the environments lack color.
Dissidia looks good; Solid, smooth colords. However, a little lacking on details.

These are my personal opinions.

It's supposed to be in 2D.

Consoles owned: Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3

With features like being able to access PS3 media content through the internet the PSP is starting to look tempting to me.

The  PSP is supposed to be roughly as  powerful as a  PS2, never  owned a PS2 myself, but  I just bought God of War and Jak 3 for my PS3, impressive games!

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

Maybe it's an excuse. I don't know. Even for a 2D game, it could look better.

Compare Parappa the Rapper to Wipeout Pulse. It's like comparing Atari 2600 with the Playstation 3.

I take it you don't like many games then...or think they look crap.  Are you a Gears of War only type of chap?
