Regarding pictures we add, are we not allowed to add ones with watermarks on them anymore?

@norDlead: The problem I have with system requirements, mandatory installs, etc. is that is even more to verify and approve. If that type of info had it's own "box" or submission form covering all of that in one swoop, it wouldn't be so bad. But if each was individually submitted.....I shudder at the thought. And as Talon said, it is very PC-oriented. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but with the way things are now it could really bog things down.

I know we all have different desires for the DB, but personally I want the DB to have every game for every system we cover added, along with the boxarts and release dates. I think it would also be nice to have a spot for the game's ESRB rating, but I'm not to keen to suggest it, or any other additions, until we have some other DB issues(critical ones in my opinion) ironed out first.

How do we know who the DB admins are? Is there a time frame to clean and correct the DB bugs as well as game duplicates?

 I totaly agree. My main priority is boxarts, games and release dates. Typically though, I like the page to look semi complete, so I add screen shots if I can easily find some, and a description if I can go to the publishers page and copy it.

Lets say I add "Finding Nemo" for the PC. I'll flesh out that page, and then go and click all the other platforms and typically add the release dates, and pics if easily found.

I also would like ESRB added, but it can be picked off of the boxart, so I didn't suggest it. Also, the only thing I sugested that is PC centric is System Requirements. All the other features are typically listed on the back of the box. All GC games listed how many blocks they took, players, progressive support, and stuff like that, and the rash of mandatory installs for the PS3 has made me want to add those features.

 @talionioonamanea

I'm ignoring you

Regarding a time frame for cleaning and correcting DB bugs, let me say this - I've made a promise to ioi that I would not overwhelm him with enhancementsfixesetc. and that I would hit him up one area at a time. Right now, the summaries is VERY important to me.

1) It's presentation is the first thing people see when they check out a game - with the varying styles we've had submitted into the database and all of the various sources that have been used, things just look kinda crappy.

2) The volume of submissions we've had for summaries has been overwhelming and I want to prevent you guys from wasting your time on things that will get rejected.

So, that said, with input from you all, we should be able to wrap this issue up relatively quickly and move on to other things. I agree, the duplicates issue still gnaws at me and there are quite a few other things I'd like to add and/or correct - let's just try and knock this issue out first and then move onto other things...

 Thanks for the answer, this will definitely make the DB better and cleaner and prevent it from clustering up in the future. BTW, I just added a new game and I'm trying to add its alternate Japanese name and I don't really know how to, could you tell me how to do that? Also do you plan on cleaning up games with incorrect Box Arts?

It's a good thing you guys are trying to clean up the DB, let me know what I can do to help and I will when I have free time.

 Right now, you can not enter the japanese names of games. You used to be able to, but right now I think you need to be an admin to do that.

If there is a boxart, release date, or screenshot you would like removed, pm any of the game admins, as only they can remove them. (your best bets for quick response are talonioninaman, quiGontcb, and MontanaHatchet)

Aye crap, I just approved a lot of summaries from Wikipedia. I should be checking on this thread more.

And remember contributors, there are a lot of things that could be added. I could think of a bunch: Australia and Korean release date slots, name slots for hundreds of different languages (hey, ya never know, there could be some lurkers who only know Tagalog!), developer(s), year of development, etc. But we administrators are very busy. Hell, have you ever seen a red message at the corner of your screen that says "180 moderator jobs pending?" It's not fun.

Like Gamefaqs, we're a site that prides itself on user-generated content and information. But if 90% of game pages with a summary list Wikipedia, people might start to think that we're either unprofessional or working with the site. And although it's easy to take a summary from a site such as Wikipedia or IGN (and I've done it plenty of times myself), those sites still wrote those summaries as their own original content.

Vgchartz is entering a high traffic ranking, and may soon become one of the top 5,000 ranked websites in the world. During times of big releases, our traffic boosts incredibly, and it's a real shame if lurkers, cynics, and curious gamers see that most of our content is taken from another site. Remember, not all sites are even very reliable anyways.

Here is my final opinion, and one that I feel strongly about. Instead of adding and updating games that are completely unnecessary (you know what these are), we should be focusing on updating release dates for the "Upcoming Releases" section (sometimes I've been working on quite a bit lately), filling in missing games, and updating the ones we already have. There are possibly hundreds of PC games that have no boxarts, release dates and publishers names, or even a correct genre. Vgchartz money is obviously a big motivation to update games, but it should be encouraging contributors to update games that really need it (until I started working on them, there were actually several current generation million sellers that were completely empty of information, many of them for the 360 and DS).

And to make it seem as if you don't have to read as much, I'll end with a short sentence.

One thing I have gotten into the habbit of is going back through the last 6-10 pages of updates and making sure no games are missing boxarts. Also, I would love to be able to modify release dates. It really irritates me that most the upcoming releases are off.

Anyways, I'll continue to submit my official summaries where possible and try to keep them in a similar format overall.

I like to finish one task at the time, First I added all missing boxarts for NEs, Snes, PS1, N64...
Then I complete NES games by first letter (half way Here)
Now I am working on the VC, I fill almost 150 games already with screenshots, summaries and release data...

@MOntana

But if you want something in special just ask me I am most than willing to help....

So you are going to accept only original Summaries?
Can I finish the VC eith wiki summaries so they look even first? I am at 70 % done...

@elgefe: I wouldn't submit any more wiki summaries. Even if you finished them all up now, there will be many, many more VC releases through the years, and they will need non-wiki summaries. In the past I've accepted many of these summaries, but some of them don't really apply to the specific game itself and I've had to reject some. Wikipedia will often have a summary for a game that started as an arcade game, and though it sometimes notes the various ports, the actual summary doesn't always have much to do with the SNES, GB, or GG "ports".

@norDlead: Concerning Japanese titles for game, you are correct sir. I try to add in the JP titles when I approve a game or release date, but if I'm facing a list of approvals that is going to take a while to plow through, I tend to pass it over.

I also like to see pages fleshed out more. If a game doesn't have sales data, it appears especially barren to my eyes. I plan to attempt to help some with this issue, but I have to wait on something before I can begin.

@Montana: I know what you mean about upcoming release dates. If I notice that they are off, I do correct them. But release dates can change so much before a game is released, and that's why I really don't like approving a release date for a game that won't see a release for many months.

@FilaBrasileiro: Once we have to ability to correct errors in the DB, my schedule permitting, I have a long list of corrections to bury myself in.

About game admins, Talon gave you the thread where ioi gave a list. But I stumbled across this a while ago: you can go to the "Community" tab, then do a search for DB admins..
