| Parokki said: I think we have a very different idea of innovation here. Is doing the same thing that was done last gen, but bigger and better innovative? Even if one dictionary says so, I don't think it accurately represents everyday usage anymore. I'm not saying all games are the same as last gen, as there are several that use the horsepower of the HD consoles and PCs to do stuff that couldn't be done on the Wii or last gen consoles, but the 360 and PS3 aren't really doing anything except increasing what they already had. Aside from adding high definition graphics, the PS3 has done a decent job at emulating Xbox Live, which again has done an ok job at offering almost PC level multiplayer to console games, as well as the kind of online stores PCs have had for I don't even remember how long, but that's pretty much it. Being able to watch Blu-ray movies is probably nice for both of the people who cared about the format war, but again it only adds to the list of movie formats supported by the PS2. These features are all nice to have, but the more I look at the HD consoles, the more they're starting to look like gimped PCs than really advanced consoles. Out of the PS3's five highest rated games, 4 have a superior version on the PC either out or on the way, and the same can be said of 7 out of the 360's top ten. As far as I can tell, only 3 out of the Wii's top 20 games are on the PC. Oh great. I had to go to the bathroom, and forgot what I was going to say next. Something about how the Wii is the only one that offers an experience you can't have on the PC, and how the high development costs of HD graphics are a giant stab in the face for innovative low budget games. |
I'd agree except on PC not being able to offer what you get on Wii. By definition a PC could you just need a motion sensing device to plug in and off you go. Every console is an attempt to offer what you could do with a PC at a price that makes it affordable and with a display approach (i.e. your TV) that puts it in the living room for easy gaming rather than an office.
However of the three consoles this gen I'd say the innovation stacks up as follows:
Wii - despite the above it has innovated with controls (if only rarely with games so far IMHO)
PS3 - I'd say its media centre approach is innovative but this does not impact gaming - more the concept of a single piece of HW for games, HD movie playback, DVD movie playback, digital content display, music, etc.
360 - Live and to a slighly lesser extend media centre (I'd dock it a few points for lack of inbuilt HD playback and the fact its design is more geared to streaming rather than content storage and streaming
But lets remember true innovation is far and few between but this gen is still young who knows what else might still come?
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
^^
A reasonable response from a person with a reasonable name trying to be reasonable.:o)
Like my above poster i think it would be unreasonable to say that any company has not innovated in some sense this generation.
Some companies have more than others in different areas when pure gaming is concerned but when you buy a system you buy everything that comes with it not just the console that plays games.
I also agree with DmeisterJ this thread is like pepsi with a hint of flamebait.

And it's a format, it didn't innovate the way we play games, just how much can be fit into a game. PS3 provides brilliant gaming experience with Blu-Ray player (Consoles play games, Blu-ray players play blu-ray discs), full 1080p HD resolution in games(Actually, have you seen many PS3 games in native 1080p? also, do any of them have the graphical brilliance of CoD4, Uncharted or even Gears?), multimedia(Again nothing to do with gaming, a PC provides multimedia, but do you call that a gaming console), online gaming(Done by the other two, and streamlined by MS originally, so FAIL) and internet (Yeah, a slower browser with a much less user friendly interface than even IE) all combined in the most technologically advanced gaming console. Nintendo invented Wii remote motion control Nintendo didn't invent motion control techonology, they just made it mainstream so no they didn't invent and the only "innovation" was them advertising the technology. Nintendo Wii provides a fun, interactive gaming experience with 3D motion control interfaced with every Wii game providing a unique and fun gaming experience Considering that most gamers agree that alot of the wii's games are shovel ware, I doubt EVERY WII GAME provides a unique and fun gaming experience.
Discuss this topic people both Sony and Nintendo are innovators of this console generation.
BTW: Apologies if it is a very simplistic approach, I know I have left a lot of information out. |

1. NBA Street Homecourt 2. All Pro Football 2K8 3. The Darkness. 4. Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer 5. Full Auto 2: Battlelines 6. Harry Potter & The Order Of the Phoenix 7. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 8. NBA 07' 9. Virtua Tennis 3 10. Ridge Racer 7
All 1080p titles. Do I win a prize? |
1. Ok 2. ?? 3. Wrong - The Darkness (demo) = 1024x576 (no AA) 4. ?? 5. Ok 6. ??? 7. Ok - But I know this is just a PS2 port 8. Ok 9. Ok 10. Ok So yea, you win a prize... Half a cookie because you got one wrong. Besides this in any case none of these games are considered graphical treasures. How about a list of high class games that fail to hit 720p. 1. Call of Duty 4 = 1024x600 (2x AA) 2. Grand Theft Auto IV = 1152x640 (no AA) 3. Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction = 1280x704 (2xAA, centered on 720p output) ok close but still under. 4.Viking: Battle for Asgard = 960x720 (2xAA) - AA buffers are merged to a 1920x720 framebuffer, which is then downscaled to 1280x720 5.Dark Sector = 1152x640 (no AA) The rest that count do 720p. But remember a TNT2 graphics card can do 1600/1200 easily on some things but that doesnt mean youd want to play anything on it at that resolution.
Tease.

This thread has nothing to do with Microsoft. It is only made to appeal to the most common fan bases on this site: Sony and Nintendo fans. By the way MS were innovative with XBox Live in their original XBox. XBox 360 just improves upon the original XBox with improved graphics and processing power.
Then surely the fact that PS3 has blu ray movies is the same as an improvement on dvd playback is it not?

And what do you think the PS3 is? I believe it is said to be 16 PS2's ducttaped together.

I'd describe innovative as something nobody has thought of doing before.
So, no, Sony aren't innovative. Nintendo probably are this generation.
