Warning, parents! If you see your teenager playing a copy of Coolest Girl in School on their mobile phone, you should take it away from them immediately -- so you can play it for yourself! This controversial (to some) game of high school truth and consequences offers little actual advice for gaining popularity, but it's extremely funny and well written, despite the minimal production values.
Because it's cool to be different, Coolest Girl in School completely ditches animation and sound effects. This text-based multiple-choice quiz (calling it a role-playing game might be a bit of a stretch) takes place over 10 days in a wild Australian high school where teachers "pash" (French kiss) students, students "bludge" (ditch class) to go smoke "cones" (joints), and bodily fluids of all kinds (pus, vomit, blood, and urine, to name a few) are violently emitted with regularity. In other words, the parody hits pretty close to home.

Coolest Girl in School takes place in the weeks after the most popular girl in school spontaneously combusts, and your job is to replace her as everyone's best friend through a series of painful social interactions. You can alter your character's dress with stylish magazine-cutout fashions, but this doesn't have any effect on your interactions. You also have a limited inventory, including tampons and a fashion magazine, which you can offer to other students when they're in need. The goal of the game is to increase your reputation, using talents like confidence, intelligence, and sexiness, while you avoid dying from embarrassment.
Coolest Girl in School contains loads of questionable situations, to the certain delight of rebellious teens and horror of bug-eyed moral crusaders, but it's not much worse than a typical PG-13 comedy. Probably the most controversial decision the developers made for Coolest Girl in School is in surreptitiously sneaking some pot into your character's purse at the beginning of the game. As a result, you can offer this illicit substance to students, teachers, and even your parents, just to see their reaction. Because of this sort of risqué content, Coolest Girl in School is the first mobile game to be initially sold through eBay, circumventing censorship by prudish telecoms. Carriers like AT&T have a tight grip on which games they'll make available to consumers, and Coolest Girl in School breaks most of their rules.

It's refreshing that Coolest Girl in School has so much fun with such serious subject matter. The game could benefit from a makeover with its total lack of visual flair, though one nice touch in the presentation is the curlicue font, which evokes the secretly passed notes of a typical high school teenager. With this much personality, humor, and charm, Coolest Girl in School is like a bad kid who makes detention a fun place to be -- you'll actually enjoy hanging around this dysfunctional high school.

While boys are into things like carjacking, beating passers-by to death and sniping the heads off of local law enforcement types, this sort of harmless fun just doesn't appeal to the fairer sex. Hence, Coolest Girl In School, which is being pitched as "Grand Theft Auto for girls" by mobile game developer Champagne for the Ladies. It replaces all that boyish drug-running and random violence with stuff girls like: experimenting with drugs, using sexuality for personal gain and clawing to the top of the social order by any means necessary. It's fun on the go! While being a gossiping, shoplifting bitch may sound like a gamer's dream, some uptight no-funsters are whining about Coolest Girl In School, claiming it's "grossly irresponsible."
I'll tell you what's grossly irresponsible—the game's graphics! Monstrous!
The Canada.com report writes that the while Australian Family Association deems the game "toxic" and Christine Daviault of Montreal's Concordia University calls it "corrosive", the folks at Champagne for the Ladies say it's all in good fun. Although the game is marketed as adhering to a distasteful representation of the high school social hierarchy, letting players "lie, bitch, [and] flirt" to get ahead, the creators say it's "tongue-in-cheek" fun.
Sounds pretty dull to me, but folks will get worked up over anything! I'll start paying attention when I can curb-stomp the head cheerleader. Until then... next!
