@Spire

The PS3 OS is installed in the internal memory of the PS3, as is every firmware update. After swaping the HDD the PS3 will only prompt you to format the new HDD, that's it.

 ah ok, thanks for the explanation.

I think I'll throw in a 750Gb just to be an ass when I buy my PS3...

Hard drive changes don't count as a new PS3 as far as accounts go, right? It doesn't count against your 5 systems you can share your account on?

I;m waiting on the 500GB notebook drive to be released and get a price cut (Christmas will be great)

Sweet. I'd love to load up my PS3 with all my music and some movies, but didn't want to jeopardize my sharing of Rock Band songs and PSN games.

Ha well my HDD in my pc is 2TB

can you use a 7200 rpm 2.5" hdd for the ps3 or only a 5400rpm?

I believe 7200rpm drives will work. I wonder if anyone has timed load time differences...

A 7200rpm HD works as well according to PS3 Fanboy : http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/10/02/7200-rpm-hdd-may-increase-your-ps3s-performance/
