Forums - Nintendo - Theres no price cut in this fiscal year, maybe even 4 years says Iwata

For me, I think Nintendo will not cut the price of the Wii till 2010, and the article proves it. Even in this fiscal year, if Nintendo's fiscal year's predictions that they will sold 50 million units of the Wiis, Wii will still sell till the end of 2009.

Seem this article was more of a confirmation just to shut up the whiners about the "so called" price cut of the Wii.

E3 2006-The beginning of the end. Wii introduced

E3 2008- Armageddon. Wii motion plus introduced. Wii Music. Reggie says Animal crossing was a core game. Massive disappointment. many Wii core gamers selling their Wii.

That fast? Even with Playstation's domination during those days is it too risky? One year is total of 12 months.

One of the "advantages" of releasing expensive (higher spec'd) hardware, is you can get more significant cost reductions sooner - and then pass them onto consumers.

Because the Wii is "simpler" and "cheaper", the cost reductions over time are smaller. But since its cheaper, it starts in a more casual price bracket anyway.

The PS2 dropped price a few months prior to the launch of the Xbox and Gamecube to stave off the new competition.

Since the Wii is already in the midst of the competition, that same strategy doesn't apply.

Doesn't matter people where I live have to buy them for 350 to 450 so people are paying basically upwards of 50% more for a Wii and the stores that do this have a Wii Shelf life of about a week at max.

The Official Huge Monster Hunter Thread:

The Hunt Begins 4/20/2010 =D

From the actual full transcripts that I read, the 4 years comment isn't completely connected to the price cut. He did say about not planning a price cut this year, and he was asked about platform cycles, and that's when he mentioned the 4 years. He does, however, say that,
"I believe that something must be wrong if we conduct our business with the premise that we will need to cut prices of our hardware as time goes on."
But from my reading of the transcript, I didn't think he means they don't plan to cut prices at all or for 4 years. I agree with others in saying that they will cut prices when they need to. They just didn't/aren't making plans about having to cut prices.

Edit: a link to the transcript. http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/080425qa/04.html

Every company denies any possibility of a price cut until the day they announce it. If they let on that there would be a price cut in a few months, then people would be less likely to buy one now. There WILL be a price cut for the Wii either during the fall of 2008 or early 2009.

The Wii is starting to get close to meeting demand in the US, I actually saw a Wii at gamestop the day after MK Wii launched. Plus in a few months they are increasing production by 33%. The only question is whether Nintendo needs to lower the price before or after Christmas.

Nintendo doesn't have any good games coming out over the summer or in the fall so it might be necessary to lower the price to keep demand up.
