*Please don't make this a discussion about the Wii (it's difficult around here sometimes).
Reading some of the posts, I've been seeing alot of people trying to rationalize why their console has won. Xbox 360 sold more units of software and PS3 will probably get a better benefit in hardware sales, becuase the attach rate is so high.
Microsoft scored a win because they were able to take a chunk that was primarily a Sony series.
Sony scored a win because they have brought themselves much further from where they were at launch when people didn't know if they were going to survive or not.
The end result - most HD third party games will be multi-platform from now on. With two consoles to develop for, growth can be achieved for HD games. Developers will figure out how to more efficiently develop for both platforms as this generation continues.
It's an excellent situation for non-fanboy gamers because now both companies (MS and Sony) are in a deadlock competitive situation. Both companies will be forced to increase the quality of their products and offerings from now on. For example, we'll see better first party offerings from MS and Sony as they try to one up each other.
Good times for HD gaming right now.
"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY." --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
