Dude why are they making so many Wiis? It's not like anybody is gonna buy them after GTA4's out!
Remind me to post this again near MGS4 or FF13 and the rest of the flavors of the month.

So... 2.4 million for 6 months... that's 14.4 million more.
Add in roughly 2 million more for May, and that's an additional 16 million for 2008, bringing the approximate total to 41 million by the end of the year -more perhaps if there has been some stockpiling for the korea and china launches and for the holiday season.
I hope everyone realizes that the PS2, in its highest selling year, only sold about 21 million or so (roughly the 2002 to 2003 period if I'm not mistaken), and Nintendo is forecasting 25 million over the next 12 months, and they're a pretty conservative company. And they are increasing production to enough to meet about 28 million. The DS last fiscal year sold about 30 million (from Sqrl's post), which I believe is its best year ever. Could the Wii top that?
And Viper makes a good point, one that seems to have to be repeated once a month. Increasing production takes time. If Nintendo made every single part for the Wii themselves, it might not be as difficult, because they would have control over it. But since I doubt they make any of it themselves, production limit is in the hands of those who do control output of parts.

Yeah!! I mean its not like they have to coordinate with 50 to 60 different businesses/governments to increase production evenly and in sync...and there aren't issues with getting raw materials or the factory space or the factory tooling, they don't need more quality assurance, or more workers, they surely don't need to worry about the shipment infrastructure, they don't even have to worry about complicated taxes/tariffs and laws that span these numerous countries, etc... none of that is actually a factor so they can just turn the dial and an extra 600k Wii's magically appear on the trucks each month..so whats the hold up??!?! just turn the dial!
/sarcasm off
It's a 600,000 increase... I would say that's the complete addition of a new production facility to me considering they have 3 at the moment and can pump out 1.8 million a month at the moment... unless they are adding 200,000 a month at the already existing plants (doesn't sound possible)..
Good news. This should solve the shortage of Wii problem by supplying more Wii's to meet up with growing demand.

It'll help, but there is no gaurantee that it will alleviate it completely.
It sucks that the USA and Japan get the majority of the Nintendo Wii consoles. Europeans miss out on the Wii.
The key phrase here is "...preparing to increase...". The increased production target will be hit sometime in the next fiscal year - but that doesn't necessarily mean they are hitting it now.
Regardless, I think this year they will be stockpiling like crazy x10 for Xmas - much more so than last year. Their aim is for anyone who wants to buy a Wii, to be able to.
