Forums - Gaming - VGC: Grand Theft Auto 4 Sells 2.5 million Units in the Americas on Day 1!!

I think 360 will have better legs than PS3.
360 version was sold out at my local gamestop so some have to wait until the next shipment. they still had 15 copies for PS3 left.

great sales for both consoles.

This just adds to my prediction that, in terms of software, this will be one of the most even gens ever, with all of the systems getting plenty of hits. Although with the HD systems, exclusives will be reduced.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

If at first you don't succeed, you fail

I was unfortunate enough to screw up my launch prospects, and could not get into a line to obtain my copy of the game. So I handed over the task of getting a copy of the game to another the next day. The first store he visited was sold out of the 360 version. The second store was the same, but he was able to get two copies that had been reserved. The clerk said another shipment was supposed to come in that day, but I suspect bribery was involved. Twenty dollars left conveniently behind a game case on the shelf conveniently helps with such things.

What was interesting is that the each of these stores still had PS3 versions of the game, and of coarse the incredibly expensive special edition for the 360. I personally suspect that the first shipments were equal. For example there were two million copies of each available at launch. With a further million sitting in reserve for each console to resupply the stock.

This could easily explain the disparity. The 360 moved more of a limited volume while the PS3 did not tax its own volume. Think of it this way if 75% of the 360 stock sold on the first day its obvious how many stores would run out since stores are not hit evenly. While the PS3 moved through 50% of its stock on the first day its easy to see how most stores would not run out, or a higher percentage of stores did not run out.

The information we are lacking is the shipments. Were the shipments equal its easy to see how the 360 may be blocked for reaching true attach rates, because consumers were being turned away without purchasing the game. Had my friend not gotten the game through back channels we two might have had to wait a couple more days to get our copies.

I think the greatest anecdotal evidence for this is that I haven't heard of anyone actually trying to purchase the PS3 version striking out. While I have heard that a number of 360 owners have similar stories to mine. Having no luck, or having to go the extra mile to get a copy. Has anyone on these forums who wanted the PS3 version actually had any difficulty?

Just a healthy reminder to anyone reading this thread. Remember to update your game collections. Something tells me that more then eighty five forum members have this game.

Of course the PS3 is going to have healthy GTA4 numbers. Everyone who owns one is hungry for something to play.

Ok I did my part, I bought No More Heroes, but they were out of Zach and Wiki.

Ok got Zach and Wiki, now if I could just finally finish Twilight Princess so I can play all these Wii games I got waiting. And no I won't buy Okami.

DNF, now there is a game that should have been scrapped completely. Reminds me of a kid whose been in school for 12 years and still doesn't know what he wants to do. At one point you just need to man up and get a job.

The closest thing that could be said is that it's been a little while since the last major release for the PS3, but that's about it.
