I don't really care about whether or not a 10 should be given out, but a lot of these sites seem a lot more willing to forgive flaws in GTA4 than they are for other games that aren't perfectly lined up with their hardcore fanboy tastes.

I really can't find a flaw in GTAIV (Ok I only played for like 8 hours and not finished it and tried everything out) but then again games may have flaws so long it doesn't hurt the gameplay to much.

-Little framerate problems
-Camera problems (there were some in SMG but afterall it doesn't spoiled my pleasure).

The game with the most flaws and the highest score that doesn't deserved it was Assasins Creed.

Ugh. Another ten?

Meh. This only solidifies my opinion of game reviewers.
I dont remember that it was this much complaining about all the perfect scores Galaxy got.

Well, out of the past few games that received tens (SMG, SBBB, Halo, BioShock), do you know how many I think deserved it?

Maybe Galaxy. That's it. But if it was left up to me, none of those games would receive a perfect score. Galaxy has its own issues and they bug me enough to knock the game down a peg.

Halo 3 was Halo 2 with a glossier paint job. Some of the MP additions are great but there are still huge flaws in the game. Too bloody short, too.

BioShock was a dumbed-down System Shock 2. I wouldn't even have held that against it too much if it wouldn't have taken a great six hours of story and shat all over itself in the last 3.

Galaxy's camera is buggered. The story is typical Nintendo-mute. Multi-player is boooooooring.

SSBB... Well, I'm just not a fighting fan. We'll leave it at that.

I agree, the only game that I've ever played that I feel deserved a 10 then, and deserves a 10 still to this day is Zelda OOT.  Nothing has come close .

All of the games listed above are definitely not 10.  And i'm sorry but how can so many developers be so two sided, for Nintendo games they crucify them for little technical hitches or issues, but for GTAIV they are 'excusable' because it's 'expected of a rockstar / gta game'?

I don't care if the reviewers think it's a great game, but FFS have some consistancy.  Just because the core elements, story and implementation of the game are perfect (yes i'll agree the city and story for GTA are almost perfect) the most important elements such as GAMEPLAY are no perfect and should dock the score.

- Climbing up ladders is a pain in the arse.
- The cover system is clunky and has killed me many times.

That said, I'm having the most fun in GTAIV than I have from many games for a lot of time recently.  It's simply an amazing game, but the technical issues in graphics and gameplay glitches and problems simply do no warrant a 10 for this game.

Euhm it was fist 9.5 but then the site got offline and changed it to a 10.

I'm thinkin' Take Two and/or Best Buy bought that extra .5....

Got into the game a bit today and it's very good. It's a polished version of the older games with almost every aspect of play improved... But there are faults.

I'll just start with one. Whoever stated that the story, dialogue, and acting are Oscar-worthy needs a punch in the fucking face to start, then a forced sitdown and viewing of the entire catalog of AFI's Top 100 immediately following that. Meh. Niko is likable and his acting is pretty good. Roman is just a little worse. The only character I really bought into was the secretary chick with the thick Jersey accent. Michelle, one of the possible love interests, is horrible. Both her dialogue and acting are absolutely atrocious.

Another case of video game reviewers pimping movies like Star Wars or Blade Runner as the gold standards of cinema while failing to realize that they don't hold video games to even the standard of those poorly acted films, for 95% of video games are loads worse. And thus far, GTA isn't proving any different. IMO, the acting is a notch below Mass Effect when you factor in multiple characters.

Btw, am i the only one who finds the shooting part of the game being more polished and enjoyable than the driving part? :P

I wonder what was that sudden change of score all about? I smell money.

that is very strange, I smell hidden cat here.

To tell you the guys the truth.. a 10 at Gamespot now means nothing. You know why? Because they've changed their rating system. For all we know, GTAIV scored 9.8-10.. could've been any of that. A game that scored 9.8 will get rounded up to 10 if you think about it. There's been a few games that scored 9.9 at Gamespot. To name a few off my head will be perfect dark, and tekken 3. In the new rating system, those would've gotten a 10 as well. So meh if GTAIV got a 10. Is it a true 10? We'll never know. But grats for it being the first game to get a 10 in the new system. A 10 in the old system would've been more amazing though.

@Tuanniez

Its even worse than that. The first score they gave was a 9.5 and then it "magically" (through the wonders of $$$ and ad pulling threads I bet) became a 10 on the gamespot website.

Horray for journalistic integrity?
