Forums - Gaming Discussion - Ubisoft comments - Wii launch titles rushed, not happy with PS3 sales

Just came across this. I think its really refreshing to see companies ADMIT their mistakes, and say that they won't happen again...

http://au.wii.ign.com/articles/792/792772p1.html

"Publisher Ubisoft was one of the first third parties to recognize the potential of Nintendo's Wii console and back the platform with a wealth of titles. The company's headlining launch games, Red Steel and Rayman Raving Rabbids, were both exclusively created for Wii and have in the six months since they released each become million-sellers around the world. However, many of the developer's other efforts - all of them quick and unimpressive ports of previously released games on other systems - have faired poorly both from a critical and retail perspective. In an interview with leading German news magazine Spiegel, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot and European head Alain Corre admitted that the publisher was too quick to rush these titles to the market.

"We made mistakes," they told the magazine. According to Spiegel, Ubisoft wanted to be first to capitalize on Wii and in its haste to release product it sacrificed the quality of the titles. Ubisoft has reportedly learned from its mistakes, though, and is promising that the quality of its forthcoming Wii projects will be significantly better.

Corre told Spiegel he is not content with sales of PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. "Sony should set a new price point soon if it still wants to sell a satisfactory amount of units this year," he said, adding, "Microsoft, too, by the way."

Spiegel is one of Europe's most influential news magazines with a weekly circulation of about one million. The publication's recent interview with Ubisoft's heads was part of a bigger piece entitled "Shelf Warmer PlayStation 3: Desperately Seeking Players," which took a very critical look at the underwhelming sales of Sony's technological goliath."

...

Pretty much spot on, I would say. Ubisoft's financial figures also showed an excellent boost from their overall strategy.

These guys have million sellers on the 360 right? My lord are the budgets for the next gen consoles really so much higher that they are selling 1m+ on the 360 but are less impressed with it than they are with the success of RRR and Redsteel on the Wii? Man that is crazy.  The PS3 part doesnt shock me, but the 360 part caught me off guard.

At least they can own up to their mistakes. That is a good move. Now, fix Red Steel controls and dont make RRR the next Mario Party series and I'll be happy. Oh, and dont screw up Assasins Creed.

More shocking is how you can develop a game for the Wii for 1M-7M. I found those numbers very low.

Music to my ears. If they can deliver on their promise to make higher quality Wii games, it'll be good for Ubisoft, good for Nintendo, and most importantly, good for gamers. I hope other third parties follow suit.

funny how you dont include the 360 in the thread title, but its you so its to be expected.

And ubi is not happy with sales, not surprising since their games suck.

PS3 gets a lot of heat from this forum. Its easy to pile on a system when its down :-/

I was piling on the system before it was down.  Ever since it became obvious in late 2005 that the PS3 would be over $400 I started arguing it would sell terribly.

Sorry, I didn't leave the 360 out on purpose (from the thread title).

After reading the interview, it sounded like he was mostly talking about the PS3 - then just threw in the 360 for the hell of it (basically saying that they would like more 360 sales - no surprise there).

And the interview itself was primarily about the PS3 (not the Wii or 360):

"The publication's recent interview with Ubisoft's heads was part of a bigger piece entitled "Shelf Warmer PlayStation 3: Desperately Seeking Players,".

Apologies again, if this came across as being biased... :P

Dude why do you have to come and turn positive news for the Wii into some petty flamewar crap?  Is your whole purpose in life to act like an asshat to anyone who doesn't share your tastes in games?

And That Guy, yes Nintendo gamers know the feeling well.  We have been ridiculed for our choice of gaming for the last decade.  I've been called all manner of ridiculous insults just for owning a gamecube (despite owning a PS2 and Xbox as well).  I'm not saying Nintendo fanboys should respond in the same way they were treated in the past just letting you know this is hardly the first time it's happened.

UbiSoft are horrid devs this generations... the only system they can handle coding for is the Wii... not impressed.
