I'm not going to make any hard claims either way, but it wouldn't suprise me if this was true ...
640p is a resolution we have been hearing more and more about lately mainly because neither the PS3 nor the XBox 360 is really powerful enough to support the graphics they want to put out on these consoles while maintaining a steady 60fps at 720p; something has to give so either they reduce the framerate, lower the quality of the graphics or reduce the resolution.
I'm pretty sure Quaz51 is right about the PS3 version being lower resolution. But I also agree that with him when he says the PS3 version looks better. I really dislike the dithering the XBox360 version does. The PS3 version looks more natural and fluid. Although, I haven't seen the game in person yet. I'm basing my opinion purely on screenshots.

Look at the road and cars under the bridge (straight ahead) for the dithering.

Which would explain why 360 version seem to have more pop in? It might just be the disc reader problem? |
I guess my point is, on *most* 360 units the game will run just fine - with little/no pop-in. But on *some* hardware (esp. the older units), you will get terrible pop-in.
So, it may be possible to put together a video of a 360 playing GTA4 that runs like crap (i.e. those little gif files) - but this will not be representative of how it will run on all 360 (or PS3) units.

hmm orange sentence contradicts yellow sentence...
Also, Quaz51 has been doing this for a while, check their forums, it seems to know what he's talking about

Just out of curiosity, how does he know? The PS3 version is not out yet (the 360 could have been DL, so people could have played that one already).
If true, it's still a wash. The texture resolution is where detail actually is in 3D gaming, and that apparently is the same on both version. And the reported difference in frame hiccups and pop-ins is not as great as griffin is making it out to be.
So either version of the game performs fine, and only the fanboys seem to actually claim otherwise.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

reviews all say the ps3 version looks sharper. i bet both consoles natively are 620, consoles upscales them to 720 but the 360 version says it and the ps3 version doesnt or something. all i know is when i play games, my reciever is always on 1080p so im happy!
A great example of the dithering in the 360 version from the same B3D thread: http://forum.beyond3d.com/showpost.php?p=1153784&postcount=507
It's amazing, all of the little things we can nitpick over.
Game is great on both systems, each has advantages and disadvantages, only system warriors lose.
I just read a good majority of the thread containing Quaz's finding, it's easily googleable with Quaz51 and GTA4. After reading about 6-7 pages of thee forums, I do believe Quaz is correct that the PS3 is at slightly lower resolution, however if you read through some of the earlier posts, you'll see that Quaz does mention a lot of tricks Sony games employ to allow games at a lower resolution with no AA to look just as good as 2xAA at 720p. Quaz51 himself actually knew about this many days ago and wanted to be 100 percent sure before posting his findings, and everyone on the forum says he's got the best pixel spotting eyes.
