Forums - Gaming - Epic Games reportedly tells staff to switch to full AI coding and artwork on Stars Wars x Marvel shooter alongside delay

Honestly this seems like a terrible idea. Most gamers will support AI being used in a supplementary fashion, but they're not going to support large chunks of the programming and art departments on AAA games getting laid off in favor of full AI coding and fully AI created art assets. This game as flop written all over it due to a combination of anti-AI boycotting and AI delivering less than stellar results.

Around the Network

This is a sign of the times.

In this case Ai is just a programming translate layer.

I mean it's like saying let's not use Unreal, but binary coding only. It's a tool to speed up coding.

Sweeney seems to have a strange superpower: everytime he says something controversial, it's the opposite of what most gamers think/want.

I think this move is a mistake that will hurt Epic's reputation, "the company that makes the must used gaming engine no longer knows how to make games and needs AI to make them".

They may have also changed their strategy to embrace AI out of necessity. Things may have changed since then, but the last time I saw what kind of numbers Fortnite was doing, they were down in all metrics: players, engagement and profits. As I said, things may have changed since then, but the biggest move Epic has done since then has been to rise the price od V-Bucks, which the community didn't take well. In other words, Fortnite may have started to fade and Epic needs to comu up with something new.

Enter the Marvel and Star Wars crossover shooter they've been working on that, allegedly, is taking more man power and time to develop than Epic expected, enough to delay its unnanounced release date. How to solve that and bring new players and money to Epic? AI, of course!

And there seems to be an IPO in the future, and we all have seen how much investors love to hear about AI in everything.

Anyway, we'll have to see if this bet in AI works for Epic or it it becomes a warning for other companies.
