Forums - Sony - Metal Gear Online Beta is Go in U.S.

At least according to Kotaku, I haven't tried it yet myself.

The Metal Gear Online beta test is now live and ready to play in North America, Europe, and Japan. We've gotten reports from various Kotakuites that they are already connected and playing the long-awaited and slightly delayed game. How is it so far? Well reader JP just played a team death match and had this to say:

It's great.
So there you have it. Great. Keep in mind that you'll have to download the 1.2 update before playing, on top of the ridiculously large 1.1 update from earlier. Those of you never got around to downloading that first update (like me) might want to get on that right now, as the download might finish before the beta is over...if we're lucky.

Post your impressions so far if you are already playing it/have been playing it.  I will definitely check it out as soon as I get home.  Anybody know if it is laggy or if everything is running smoothly?  How is the gameplay?

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

played it for 45 minutes. Played TDM, DM and return the thing to your base for 30 seconds mode. Overall there seems to be a lot of emphasis on gun use and CQC doesn't quite work as well as I'd like it to. Also, lots of emphasis on team work and the SOP system which i like, though some people don't quite get this yet. Grenades, even if they don't kill the enemy, knock them to the ground which is a nice touch. There are some unique elements that are great but I need more time with it to make a judgment on it and it's potential.

ZOMG!!!!

*runs to ps3*

I think it's amazing so far, I rarely play online games but i'm enjoying this.

Fucking amazing.

I never played online MGS 3 or Portable Ops but I am loving this.

Maps are brilliant, lots of close quarter shootouts, so many different pieces of cover, great sniping spots, human cannons, all so good.

When you first start playing you'll feel like a noob cause you have no idea what you're doing.

So many different gameplay elements, I was literally held hostage twice by this guy who used me as a human shield. This other time, the whole opposing team passed me by cause I was disguised as a box. Then I got out and dropped a nade at their feet and shot and killed 3 of them. These are the kinds of things you just don't see in other shooters.

You're trying to save a team mate but you shoot him by mistake and your weapon locks up, you drop to the ground then turn on your back and the unaware pass you by thinking you were killed in the last exchange....

There are only two game modes and two maps in the beta. Most people were playing team death match which is a mode I usually don't like in sho

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

I despise what the have done to the controls.

most people i think will hate it on the first go, i know i did. the aiming is a bitch to get used to. but now i love it!

Shooters but love it in this one. Short 5 minute matches with 15 kills needed to win, very fast paced and unforgiving.

I highly recommend trying the 4 tutorials before playing because the controls are very complex but well implemented. You'll use almost every single button on the controller.

The game ran extremely smoothly with 16 player matches. Disconnected only twice. Literally zero lag the other games. Konami really stepped up after their server disasters of the past week.

The game even has a countrrstrike style gun buying system if you set it, that rewards good players. Very sool skill system with lots of different skills to choose from (Choose wisely).

The on the fly switching between 3rd and 1st person view works superbly, head shots abound.

There's nothing more entertaing than running around as a box in a multiplayer game.

My only complaint is that I hope there is more customization of characters' looks in the full game.

I love how machine guns handle in this game, they actually feel powerful
