Forums - Microsoft - Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond Retiring. AI Leadership Replacing Him.

It sounds like she just write what Nadella and Spencer coached her to write, seems like all PR fluff to me especially since Matt Booty got promoted. There's nothing in her memo that's going to change anything. I want to know what Sara Bond has to say, that's the real story. Nadella didn't mention her name at all in his email. It's what is not being said that is the real story here.

Sarah has since posted the email she sent to employees:

Hi team,

I know there’s a lot of news to take in today.

I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built together over the past eight-plus years. PC and cloud gaming are growing faster than ever, our next console is well underway, and together we’ve helped lay the foundation for a more open gaming platform that spans devices and reaches players around the world.

When we announced our intention to acquire Activision Blizzard in 2022, I committed to helping lead Xbox through what would be a critical period of change. Over the past four years, we’ve navigated that moment together and positioned the business for what comes next. We took on some of the biggest challenges this organization has ever faced and did it as one team.

With that, I’ve decided this is the right time for me to take my next step, both personally and professionally. We’re living through a transformative technological era that will shape the next generation of our industry, and I’m energized by what’s ahead. This moment also presents a unique opportunity for fresh eyes and new leadership to guide the team into its next chapter. I’ve had the privilege of spending time with Asha over the last few weeks as we’ve planned for this transition, and I’ve seen firsthand her deep commitment to our players, developers, and brand. She brings deep technology and commerce experience, along with a strong track record of building and scaling platforms that the world uses. Xbox deserves this. I’m excited to see her lead this next chapter for our team. I’ll remain on as a Special Advisor to Asha to help ensure a smooth transition and set the organization up for continued success.

I want to thank Phil for his mentorship and friendship over the years. He’s been a consistent champion of this business and the people who make it what it is, and I’ve learned a great deal from the way he leads through both opportunity and challenge. I’m grateful for his trust and support throughout my time on the team. I also want to thank Satya for his sponsorship and support throughout my time at Microsoft.

As I prepare to sign off, I’ve been reflecting on three simple questions I’ve tried to use to guide my days:

Did I bring my best?
Did I help someone else succeed?
Did I do my best work?

I hope the answer has been yes for many of you. It’s been a privilege to work alongside this team.

Always,
Sarah

Phil's head should have rolled years ago, he demolished their console business.

An AI guy taking over is classic MS; their MO since 2013 has been to step on every possible rake and stumble at every possible obstacle.

Question: How do we know it was Phil Spencer who was responsible for Xbox's collapse? How do we know this wasn't Microsoft making demands that Phil tried to make the best of? For instance, how do we know it wasn't the higher-ups at Microsoft who called for Phil to enforce a pivot from first-party exclusivity to third-party? (Which, I would argue, was the main reason Xbox fell apart at all— had Cuphead released multiplatform day one, for instance, would their Holiday 2017 figures had been nearly as strong? Ofc the Pro model is what really drove sales, but the cherry on top of having one of the hottest apps exclusive to their platform really could've made a big difference.)

Because he is head of XBOX. Its his say when it comes to console specifications, games that are canceled or green lit and where these games will be released.

MS couldnt care less for XBOX since XBOX division doesnt even count for 5% of all money MS earn, even during their best years.

I'm just asking evidence is all. Don't wanna be making any assumptions— you are aware Microsoft is like the most valuable company in the world, no? Not sure if the head of the Xbox gaming division will always have the final say. This isn't SquEnix or Nintendo.

zombiefranchise
noun

zom·bie ˈzäm-bē  ˈfran-ˌchīz
variants or less commonly
Synonyms of zombiefranchise; simpsonitis
1a: an intellectual property that no longer has its original creator and lacks effective leadership.
2a: an intellectual property that should have ended but now exists only to make money.
3a: an intellectual property that has almost no ties to the original creators. Often purchased by an unrelated company and left to slowly fad into irrelevance with a lackluster continuation of said IP.

eh. Crash and Spyro may not have their OG teams (though TBF not many games have that), but the teams behind the N'Sane & Reignited Trilogies, Crash 4, and Crash Team Racing are still very much present. Crash Bandicoot is definitely still an alive-and-well IP... Spyro, maybe not so much, though TFB did a wonderful job on the Trilogy and I know they could make something incredible if given the opportunity.

Can't be saved anymore.  No use removing one tumor when the entire body is riddled with terminal cancer. Too little too late. Should have been removed in 2013. New boss says some PR shit but we know they will do the opposite.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

The Sarah Bond news is crazy imo.

I remember when she was first in the spotlight: there seemed to be so much positivity around Xbox and a bright future seemed paved for them.

And now here we are... feels like Spencer inadvertently screwed over her promotion.

Xbox already had one foot in the grave prior to this.
Now, it's starting to lay down inside the hole while the dump truck filled with dirt is backing up.
