Switch 2 vs Switch 1 Sales Comparison in Japan - December 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 1.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch 2 Vs. Switch 1 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 775,526 - Switch 2

Total Lead: 2,230,019 - Switch 2

Switch 2 Total Sales: 4,018,320

Switch 1 Total Sales: 1,788,301

December 2025 is the 7th month that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch 2 has outsold the Switch 1 by 0.78 million units when you align the launches. The Switch 2 is now ahead of the Switch 1 by 2.23 million units.

The 7th month for the Switch 2 is December 2025, while for the Switch 1 it is September 2017. The Switch 2 has sold 4.02 million units, while the Switch 1 sold 1.79 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold 36.50 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 32.48 million units behind the lifetime sales of the Switch 1.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - December 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 26,681 - PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 592,136 - PS4

Total Lead: 854,227 - PS4

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 7,331,881

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 8,186,108

December 2025 is the 62nd month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 26,681 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.59 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 0.85 million units.

The 62nd month for the PS5 in Japan is December 2025, while for the PS4 it is March 2019. The PS5 has sold 7.33 million units, while the PS4 sold 8.19 million units during the same timeframe.

The PS4 crossed 8.5 million in month 68, 9 million in month 72, and 9.5 million in month 84. The PS4 sold 9.68 million units lifetime. The PS5 is currently 2.25 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned Europe sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch 1.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 in Europe and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

The 7th month for the Switch 2 is December 2025, while for the Switch 1 it is September 2017. The Switch 2 has sold 3.37 million units, while the Switch 1 sold 1.71 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold 39.61 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 36.24 million units behind the lifetime sales of the Switch 1.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold 48.75 million units to date. The Switch 2 is currently 44.31 million units behind the lifetime sales of the Switch 1.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in the US - December 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

December 2025 is the 62nd month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 0.08 million units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 1.13 million units. The PS5 is currently ahead of the PS4 by 0.39 million units.

The PS5 has sold 28.66 million units in 62 months, while the PS4 sold 28.27 million units. Month 62 for the PS5 is December 2025 and for the PS4 is December 2018.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006 in North America and Japan and in March 2007 in Europe. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

December 2025 is the 62nd month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 3 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 0.07 million units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has grown its lead over the PS3 by 2.74 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 27.97 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 89.44 million units in 62 months, while the PlayStation 3 sold 61.47 million units. Month 62 for the PlayStation 5 is December 2025 and for the PlayStation 3 is December 2011.

This month the PlayStation 5 has outsold the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 3. The PS5’s 89.44 million units sold is above the 87.40 million units the PS3 sold lifetime.
