Forums - Microsoft - Another preview of the 2008 RPG of the year!

Ahem, Bioware is releasing 2 RPGs this year: Mass Effect and Dragon Age, both on PC. There's a chance DA might be pushed to early 2009 though.

Mass effects is old news, that has already been released in 2007 otherwise it would be a contender and Dragon Age will most likely not be released 2008.

The PC version of Mass Effect is not old news, it will be the definitive version of the game and besides, often new versions of games from past years get awards too: RE4 Wii did it, and ME PC is not in such a drastic position as RE4 was since ME is not a 2 year old game.

Dragon Age will proably get pushed to 2009, but we are not sure yet.

Dude, are you kidding? Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 had nothing to do with Fable or any other WRPG. They were pure hack'n'slash, really enjoyable but they hardly had side quests (especially the first installment) or character leveling. If you payed some attention to some statements you would know that Space Siege is gonna be even more Action Oriented

Mass Effect, Tons Better on PC? Man, I don't know what to say. You nailed me down.
I guess you have no idea what ME even looks like, except some screens you've probably seen.

@starcraft. Was FFXII a masterpiece? Don't think so. Why should FFXIII be such? I'm not trying to convince anyone. But if a stated myself a WRPG fan, i wouldn't get involved in a JRPG discussion.
Sayin' "Fable 2 is gonna suck cause all the WRPGs suck and the best RPG is gonna be a JRPG (whatever)" is retarded.

Dungeon Siege is an Action/RPG, just like Diablo is an Action/RPG. A pure Hack 'n Slash wouldn't have costumization, leveling or any other stuff that RPGs have.

I played Mass Effect on my bro's xbox, thank you, so I know about it. The PC version will have:

  • New squad control interface – Players can now issue commands to individual squad members, providing a new level of depth to the tactical combat.
  • Hot-key functionality – Biotic powers and abilities can be mapped to individual keys, allowing a faster “run and gun” style of gameplay.
  • Re-designed Mako controls – Players can explore alien planets and engage in vehicular combat with an intuitive and fully camera independent control system for the Mako, their all-terrain vehicle.
  • New Quick-save button and increased number of save slots.
  • New decryption mini-game – A new decryption mini-game invites players to test their skills as they avoid obstacles and move their icon to the center of the digital mechanism.
  • New inventory screen GUI and functionality – The enhanced inventory system makes it easier for players to equip and modify their weapons and armor.
  • 'Bring down the Sky' completely Free.

I don't think that it's fair for you to call Fallout anything close to a flop based on opinions on this forum (which also implies that alot of people in this thread would choose fallout3 over fable2), but call Fable the 2008 RPG of the year based on press previews. If anything, Fallout3 has more hype and better impressions coming form the press than Fable 2.

And don't mind the Fallout faithfull, they want Fallout3 to be exactly like Fallout2. It would be a shame for Bethesda to put some new paint on Fallout2 with additional features and call it Fallout3 just for those rabid fans.

We want Evolution of the series, not De-evolution (which is what Bethesda seems to be doing). We also don't want Fallout 3 to be like Fallout 2, But I would rather have it be like FO2 instead of the crap Fallout game Bethesda is making.

It's not evolution when Bethesda is removing all the adult themes from Fallout 3, like drug addiction, sex themes, racism, xenophoby, homossexuality, slavery, prostitution and child-killing.

It's not evolution when Bethesda is changing and worsening the dialogue structure in Fallout 3 and we will no longer have the freedom of choice we had in Fallout 1&2.

It's not evolution when Bethesda is hiring crappy voice-actors (taken from a true reporter) and removing all the children which will hurt the game believability.

It's not evolution when Bethesda is dampening the All-important gritty, sarcastic and dark humor atmosphere which was a trademark of the series.

Shio, don't bother. I've noticed that every person who retorts to those of us complaining about Fallout 3 never played the first two games... Which makes their opinion pretty much worthless. It's hard to understand why we are complaining when they don't even know what the Fallout games are all about and how Bethesda is changing the entire formula behind the series and watering it down.

It's like someone who never played a Mario platformer talking up the release of Luigi's Mansion and then talking shit on everyone who wanted a new Mario game.

    ...

No wait, that doesn't really work. Luigi's Mansion was actually a pretty good game.

I am playing Fable at the moment and I have to say I like it but their are still some issues that I want to change.

I guess no one thinks that DQ IX will be game of the year? Or that it'll be really good?

Ι bet my head that nobody of those guys who were "dissapointed" from the original Fable, did actually play the game.
Neither will they play Fable 2. But they still say they are not convinced. Why the hell should you be convinced about a game you don't even care about? (actually you care a lot. You pray that it failed!).
Anyway, you're already convinced that FFXIII or Tales of Whatiscalled, or even Last Remnant will be superior.
You are looking forward to playing ANOTHER BORING JRPG. I'm looking forward to playing Peter's product of Spiritual Superiority and Genius. Nough said

@starcraft. Do you have an anti-MS magnet or what?

Of course I played the first one, played it clocked it, beat the expansion pack.

I never said I didn't enjoy it, I merely said it was dissapointing. I was expecting a very free roaming RPG with plenty of choices but I ended up with a linear RPG with only two major choices and neither really affected the plot or how I interacted with characters.

    *SPOILERS*

I was given the choice of killing my sister for that all powerful sword but when I didn't kill her I got a different all powerful sword anyway, brilliant! Killing whisper does nothing other than piss off her brother, who never even attempts to kill you.

Also DMesiter is pretty much right, DQIX will probably be RPGoTY

@Shio: I fail to see how Fallout3 is any way a "crap game". What Bethesda is trying to do is make this game appeal to as many as people as possible while keeping the RPG element and setting of the Fallout franchise. Based on the impressions and previews so far, they are doing a damn good job. If you guys want drug addiction, sex themes, racism, xenophoby, homosexuality, slavery, prostitution and child-killing, you can go back and play the old fallout games. The new "crap" fallout, will be waiting for you old timers when you inevitably decide to pick it up based on the likely fact that it'll probably turn out great and increase the fanbase. Don't be afraid of change, accept it.

@Rocketpig: Hey, i just don't want to see any excuse and sucking up to Bethesda if Fallout3 turns out to be better than your previous and precious fallout memories.

    @bbsin
I don't want changes that are for the worse. Have you ever played Fallout 1 & 2? If you did, you'd see what many fans are so afraid of losing in Fallout 3, it's not just the adult themes.

Again, to put it bluntly, you don't know what the hell you're talking about. You haven't even played the original Fallouts. You don't know what the series is supposed to be about. It's not just all apocolypse and futuristic 50s design themes, you know. There was a definitive theme to the Fallout games that made them much more than just another WRPG and Bethesda is taking the core of that and tossing it straight out the window.

And we have a right to be pissed about it. Bethesda shouldn't have purchased the Fallout name if they weren't going to try to make a Fallout game.
