Here’s to hoping this could be sold in major retailers. Otherwise, I just don’t see an audience such a device.

If you’ve got Steam set up on your PC, why purchase a weaker version of your PC? And if you don’t have a PC, then chances are you don’t have Steam… so you either (i) won’t know about this device, or (ii) would be better off purchasing a more powerful PS5 unless priced competitively.

Only audience I could see is those looking to enter the Steam ecosystem but not wanting a PC.

You're looking at it too much from a console user POV lol

Well their is a big group of gamers who always said => PC gaming is a hassle, I just want to game, if they can have a console like experience I would get one game.  I would get this but I am waiting till what the Xbox steam console is going to be like, the benefit of being more powerfull + gamepass is still an important factor.

I like that steam machine, something like that will be my entry to pc gaming when this console gen ends. Looking at the description however I wonder why it says HDMI 2.0 (not 2.1) and why it has no ethernet port?

It does have an eternet port. Gigabit.

PC gaming is primarily used with DisplayPort, so I'm guessing that's why it has HDMI 2.0. Not as important.

Though they are marketing it as a device for your living room TV. So the lack of HDMI 2.1, and VRR by extension, is a bit of a kicker on that front.

Good point! Cost effective measure? Not sure what kind of a difference that would make.

This is a console after all, no? Makes sense to look at this from a console user POV IMO.

I guess maybe a good question: What is the appeal? I’m struggling to see it, as somebody who is making the jump to PC later this year.

And it has no disc drive then who would buy it if their are no physical games =p?

That's a fair point. But it's a PC with a console-like overview interface. Linux based PC specifically that Valve made called SteamOS. You can hook up a mouse/keyboard and use it like a regular PC. Can even install Windows on it if you want.

The appeal is primarily making PC gaming easier to get into as it's been notoriously difficult as well as Valve wanting to go outside the concept of standard computing at a desk. So making PC gaming easier to get into and making it affordable. Like what the Steam Deck was with PC handhelds. Much cheaper than the competition with an easy to understand UX/UI.

Sort of. You get a closer to console experience with SteamOS. But they don't use the word "console" anywhere and explicitly say "This is a PC" lol.

It's not meant to be a product that sells as well as a PS/Nintendo console. Just like the Steam Deck. No one should be expecting this to sell tens of millions.

It's main appeal is going to be for people who A. don't want to build their own PC, B. Want a very small (for pc standards) machine and C. Want a console-like experience out of the box. Also the usual people who will buy anything Valve is involved with.

Hmm, may pick one up. I do not use windows anymore, so I could get some use out of one.

Ah I see. That makes sense. Well, the more options, the merrier! I’ll look into it maybe.
