Forums - General - US citizens NOT equal before the law

@Konnichiwa - And you think that's acceptable?

@Fuzzmosis - No, it reinforces that people are not equal. An ordinary person of previously good character would have got a community sentence and probation. The judge said Snipes got the maximum because he was famous.

I thought the dicey part was where the prosecution recommended the maximum sentence because of his fame. The question is whether that should be a mitigating factor one way or the other. I'm sure his lawyers will try to work that angle if an appeal is in the works.

It depends on what they did in my opinion.

Like Paris Hilton who got caught with some drugs.

She probably paid a big fine for her crime to the state and the state probably prefers the money than putting her in a jail that only cost the state money.

tax evasion is a serious crime and usaully the more money involved the bigger the sentence.

So for 3 years and 17 million dollars owed, I don't see any inequality.

If you go do that you will be sentenced the same.

"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."

Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist. Especially if you think the moon landing was faked.

ferret - The article said the prosecution pushed for the maximum sentence because he was famous as an example. That is called that as much bullshit as doing it because he was black. Pushing for the maximum sentence is what prosecutors do, but his reasoning was shit. -Edit- I thought I wrote that in my first post. Apparently I deleted it.-

Now, if the judge was lying, it's possible, but he gave his reason. I don't know evidence that led to that conclusion. So... again?

There have been TONS of cases where celebrities get better treatment and easier sentences...so I honestly don't care.

It's not like it's illegal...it's the maximum suggested term.
And that's wrong too. Your judicial system is an absolute joke if someone's job impacts upon their sentence. I'm surprised it doesn't bother you that the your country, the supposed leader of the free world, is unable to uphold the basic principle upon which all Western legal systems are based on - equality before the law.

I'm fed up with the whole government. For the past few years, we've been moving ever so slowly towards socialism, which is certainly not a free country. The judicial system has been and always will be at least a bit biased; nothing is perfect. But things like this case are the least of my worries in the government.

I didn't say it was necessarily fair. The reasoning for the maximum term shouldn't fly.

But I have no problem with the term itself...Wesley Snipes makes a ton of money and dodging taxes is a big no-no.

There are more important issues than Wesley Snipes serving a legal amount of time in jail for willfully dodging his taxes.
