Forums - Sales - Tie Ratio: NPD Numbers

I have a quick question that I would appreciate if someone can help me with. When the NPD announced that 2007 video game software sales were $8.64 billion, does that figure not include Wal-Mart?

That figure is extrapolated just like the sales figures from Wal-Mart are.

NPD still guesses what WM sales are and they, both unit and revenue.

Can we take out PS3's Warhawk too, since that was just sold because of the headset? (otherwise they would've downloaded it online, right?) ;>

I'd say we should take out Eye of Judgment too since it was only $10 plus the Eye, but I don't think that'd really make a difference. :P

We're gonna have to take out Wii Fit soon since obviously it has the balance board =P

MK wii as well. It has the wheel.

We can't count Wii Sports, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, hell, anything with the name "Wii"in it, so we can't even count the Wii, so the tie ratio is INFINITY.

Got it.  Thanks Viper1!  Does NPD mention that on their website?  I've been looking but can't find anything there that confirms that.

I doubt it's listed specifically like that but it's well known they haven't had a tracking relationship with WM since about 2002. They use past sales and sampling from other retailers to extrapolate WM, and the whole market for that matter.

They also recently lost their relationship with Toys R Us.

I wanna see 10 articles saying that the PS3 owner are not buying PS3 games... Obviously that is not going to happen, first positive news for the Wii this week

Wow. So the Wii and PSP tie ratios are perfectly normal and reports that they can't sell software are pretty much baloney.

What a surprise.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

But here is the fun part : " Just for kicks, we asked about the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, which have the ratios of 4.7 and 4.2 respectively. " If the PSP tie-ratio is horrible than the DS is suffering to .... its much better than what I was expecting :)

Much better then the 2.2 the PSP has in Japan vs DS 4.4.

Makes you wonder if Europe follows more the US or Japan.

In late 2005 it was just 1.8. It's likely since grown.  (Hey before piracy apparently got big people still weren't buyin games.)

Did someone just divide by zero?

OH SHI-

if they counted WiiSports it would be 6.3... And many Wii owner buy a Wii FOR that game...
