Forums - Gaming - Do you expect the Wii to end up being THE JRPG console this gen?

The Xbox 360 is the current premier destination for JRPG gamers, and will remain so for at least a year.

At the end of the generation, I expect the Wii to have the lead followed by the PS3/360 in a statistical and quality-based tie.

@ the thread title:

No. The PS3 is getting the ones that committed early, like FFXIII; the 360 is getting the ones that chose to capitalize on its early lead; and the Wii will get all the ones that flock to the winner.

Last time the PS2 had all three camps and that is NOT the case this gen.

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

OT: Yes, I expect Wii to be the JRPG console. Much like the PS2 was, for the same reasons.

I'm gonna go ahead and say it:

Okami on the PS2 looked better than anything on the PS3.

The power under the hood does NOT affect the ability of a developer to make some beautiful art.

If Square "needs" power, they're full of shit. Nobody needs it. Dragon Quest is coming to the DS. Monster Hunter is coming to the Wii. Who knows what else Nintendo's weaker systems will be snatching as their domination ramps up every single day.

I don't think FF is gonna make a huge switch mid-development this time, but it's happened before. FF7 was being developed for the N64 before Square made their big jump. It could happen again. I think they'll wait at least one game, but by the end of this generation, Nintendo's gonna have stolen a lot more games.

Even if Squeenix keeps the main FF series on the PS3, I guarantee the Wii will get more Squeenix games than the PS3, and the DS might even get more Squeenix games than either of them.

I think people are being a little unfair to Ajax.

Better graphics and hardware give artists more freedom to give life to their artistic vision.  I could just imagine how frustrating it would be to be an artist wanting for a game to look just perfect but to be hindered because the machine was not technically able to fulfill my artistic vision.  Maybe all the little touches that suck up processing power don't matter to some people.  Maybe flowing hair and rippling realistic water aren't important to you.  But consider it from the perspective artist would love to see her creations come to life in vivid beauty.

No one "needs" anything, but it's better to have lots of capabilities in the machine and not need them all than to be limited, restricted by what the machine can do.  If Square feels that the PS3's hardware is most able to fully convey their artistic vision to the world then that's what they'll use (within reason, budget...etc).

Well then why doesn't all "artists" just develop their games for top of the line PCs. That way, they won't be hindered by anything at all. Anyways, Ajax is making an assumption at what SE wants (actually he is assuming that SE doesn't want FFXIV on the Wii because it's too inferior to handled the "visual style" which is an extremely poor excuse) It's nice to have a powerful machine but to work on but just because Wii can't do some things does not mean SE is automatically discounting it which is the argument Ajax is making. Anyways, the FF XII cost $40 million to develop for on the PS2 which is such an unreasonable budget but the huge install base made it worth it. I can only guess the budget for XIII but it's doubtful the sales will match the previous installments. It seems these days the "artistic freedom" drives up development cost needlessly as well as create delays in the game's release.

I like Ajax's posts =(, just two people were objecting but they didn't hit the nail on the head
they kept on beating around the point and I wanted to lol before page 4 =(.

but the Op had little to do with FF and more to do with JRPGs in a sum, and in that case then yea

Wii get's them, which we all agree on I think, but I glare at people who put 1 leg through the door.

This could be the time where Square follows suit rather than the rest of them following square.
