PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - May 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

Gap change over last 12 months: 572,134 - PS4

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 6,864,227

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 7,165,548

May 2025 is the 55th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 51,667 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.57 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 0.30 million units.

The 55th month for the PS5 in Japan is May 2025, while for the PS4 it is August 2018. The PS5 has sold 6.86 million units, while the PS4 sold 7.17 million units during the same timeframe.

The PS4 crossed 8 million in month 61, 8.5 million in month 68, and 9 million in month 72. The PS4 sold 9.68 million units lifetime. The PS5 is currently 2.82 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - May 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

May 2025 is the 55th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 29,741 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 0.16 million units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 0.66 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.68 million units in 55 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 1.34 million units. Month 55 for the Xbox Series X|S is May 2025 and for the Xbox 360 is June 2010.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 58,983 units. The PS5 is currently ahead of the PS4 by 1.52 million units.

The PS5 has sold 26.03 million units in 55 months, while the PS4 sold 24.52 million units. Month 55 for the PS5 is May 2025 and for the PS4 is May 2018.

The PS4 crossed 25 million in month 57 and 30 million in month 71. The PS4 sold 34.93 million units lifetime in the US. The PS5 is 8.90 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in the US.

In the last 12 months, the PlayStation 5 has outsold the Nintendo Wii by 3.31 million units. The Nintendo Wii is ahead of the PlayStation 5 by 9.15 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 76.31 million units in 55 months, while the Nintendo Wii sold 85.46 million units. Month 55 for the PlayStation 5 is May 2025 and for the Nintendo Wii it is May 2011.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has grown its lead over the PS3 by 4.64 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 25.07 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 76.31 million units in 55 months, while the PlayStation 3 sold 51.24 million units. Month 55 for the PlayStation 5 is May 2025 and for the PlayStation 3 is May 2011.

The PlayStation 3 did not reach current PlayStation 5 sales until month 77 when it had sold 76.67 million units.

The PlayStation 3 crossed 60 million in month 62, 70 million in month 73, and 80 million in month 85. The PlayStation 3 sold 87.4 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 11.09 million units behind lifetime PS3 sales.

Switch vs DS Sales Comparison - May 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS Global:

Gap change over last 12 months: 6,863,948 - Switch

Total Lead: 2,506,123 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 150,693,454

DS Total Sales: 153,199,577

May 2025 is the 99th  month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 0.21 million units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 6.86 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 2.51 million units.

The 99th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is May 2025, while for the DS it is January 2013. The Switch has sold 150.69 million units, while the DS sold 153.20 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 3.33 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.
