Switch vs DS Sales Comparison - March 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

March 2025 is the 97th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 5,215 units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 6.80 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 2.11 million units.

The 97th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is March 2025, while for the DS it is November 2012. The Switch has sold 150.11 million units, while the DS sold 152.22 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 3.91 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison - March 2025

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.76 million units. The PS4 is currently ahead of the PS5 by 2.21 million units.

The PS5 has sold 75.28 million units in 53 months, while the PS4 sold 77.49 million units. Month 53 for the PS5 is March 2025 and for the PS4 is March 2018.

The PS4 crossed 80 million units sold worldwide in month 56, 90 million in month 62, and 100 million in month 72. The PS4 sold 117.20 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 41.92 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in November 2020, while the Xbox One launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox One has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 4.75 million units. The Xbox Series X|S is currently behind the Xbox One by 7.36 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 32.77 million units in 53 months, while the Xbox One sold 40.13 million units. Month 53 for the Xbox Series X|S is March and for the Xbox One is March 2018.

The Xbox One crossed 45 million in month 62, 50 million in month 71, and 55 million in month 77. The Xbox One has sold 57.96 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 25.19 million units behind lifetime Xbox One sales.

For those wondering I plan on creating 5 new sales comparison charts when we start doing Switch 2 estimates in a few months. 4 of them will be comparing Switch 2 to Switch 1 - worldwide, US, Europe, and Japan. And the other will be Switch 2 compared to PS5.

I plan on dropping PS5 vs NS worldwide, PS5 vs XS in the US, and XS vs X1 in Europe. I am also considering dropping PS5 vs PS4 in Europe, NS vs DS in the US, and XS vs Xbox 360 in Japan.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 75.28 million units in 53 months, while the PlayStation 3 sold 49.87 million units. Month 53 for the PlayStation 5 is March 2025 and for the PlayStation 3 is March 2011.

The PlayStation 3 did not reach current PlayStation 5 sales until month 77 when it had sold 75.80 million units.

The PlayStation 3 crossed 50 million in month 54, 60 million in month 62, and 70 million in month 73. The PlayStation 3 sold 87.4 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 12.12 million units behind lifetime PS3 sales.

The PlayStation 5 launched November 12, 2020 in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, and the rest of the world on November 19, 2020. The Xbox Series X|S launched worldwide on November 10, 2020.
