Forums - Gaming Discussion - The third console curse: Which was the biggest stumble?

I think the biggest stumble was...

Nintendo 64 5 6.25%

Sega Saturn 40 50.00%

PS3 7 8.75%

Xbox One 28 35.00%

Total:80

What's weird about this "curse" is that all four companies were at the time coming off a period of immense success; the PS2, Megadrive, and 360 were the most successful systems from each manufacturer, and while the SNES was not as it faced stiff competition, it eventually emerged victorious and reasserted Nintendo's dominance over the console market.

Then, collectively, they all lost their minds and shot themselves in the foot.

It could be argued that it was precisely their success that lead to overconfidence and subsequently grave mistakes. Pride cometh before the fall, as they say.

I've seen this occur throughout time tbh. We are possibly the most prideful race on this entire planet, and we show it in so many ways, and in some cases it tends to blind us, leading us to making rash or poor decisions down the road.

Look at Apple when they went up against MS back in the day. They were the rag tag underdog way back then, but now they're up there right next to MS, and both have made bad calls and end up losing sight of what made them who they are today.

Gaming-wise, look at Naughty Dog. They were once known for making Crash bandicoot and Uncharted, but now they've become the one trick pony with TLOU. Guerrilla Games used to be known for gmaking Killzone, but now they're in the HZD mineshaft.

You can have both pride and pigeon-hole yourself into just making one thing for the rest of your life (which is honestly a stale outcome to have), or you can be prideful and then lead yourself to a fall from lapse in making good decisions. I feel like companies and game studios are capable of doing both.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

So it would seem the consensus here is that the Saturn was the biggest fuckup of the four, though Xbox One also garnered a lot of votes.
N64 meanwhile got off the most lightly, with the least number of people crowning it biggest stumble.

It would seem a major factor was how well the system in question satiated the fans in spite of its commercial missteps; PS3 and N64 for instance are generally looked back upon fondly for their killer exclusives, while Saturn and Xbox One are somewhat more controversial.

Saturn among retro gamers is seen as a great system because of the Japanese library and better versions of some PS1 games. A lot of exclusives. From SEGA to Shmups/fighting games and RPGs. It's a commercial failure outside of Japan. However it's one of the most in-demand systems to collect for. Hard Off is a chain of stores in Japan that sell a lot of games new and old. Saturn sections are generally huge. Xbox One is just seen as a failure from a games point of view.  It had almost nothing to offer unto itself. So Saturn is seen as an underrated system by retro gamers that SEGA did indeed fuck over from a business end. Xbox One will forever just be seen as the console that sunk the brand with no games.

There's definitely love for the Saturn, I have a soft spot for it myself, just perhaps not as much mainstream appreciation as for N64 or PS3 due to it reaching a smaller audience.

No, you are dead wrong as usual.  The funny thing is that you are in denial about the Saturn's epic failure.  You always have been, and you always will be. Looks like someone needs a vacation.

You don't follow retro gamer circles you don't check eBay prices and you have never shopped at retro gaming stores or a Hard Off. I know what your initial stand for.
