PS5 Best-Seller, Sales Drop For All Consoles - Worldwide Hardware Estimates for August 2024

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console worldwide with 898,909 units sold for August 2024, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 60.91 million units lifetime worldwide.

The Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 635,807 units to bring its lifetime sales to 142.69 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 266,930 units to bring their lifetime sales to 29.88 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 2,390 units to bring its lifetime sales to 117.19 million units.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2017 are down by over 140,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by over 70,000 units. PS4 sold 1,038,948 units for the month of August 2017 and Xbox One sales were at 337,039 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 535,979 (-37.4%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 162,679 units (-37.9%) and Nintendo Switch sales are down by 326,007 units (-33.9%). The PlayStation 4 is down by 16,380 units (-87.3%) year-over-year.

Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales are down by over 129,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are down by over 167,000 units, and Nintendo Switch sales are down by nearly 17,000 units.

2024 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 8.54 million units, the Nintendo Switch has sold 5.96 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 2.66 million units.

PS5 Best-Seller as Sales Top 25M LT - Americas Hardware Estimates for August 2024

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in the Americas (USA, Canada, & Latin America) with 275,655 units sold for August 2024, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 25.24 million units lifetime in the Americas.

The Xbox Series X|S was the second best-selling console with an estimated 158,205 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 18.08 million units. The Nintendo Switch came in third place with 132,143 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 54.02 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 936 units to bring its lifetime sales to 41.54 million units.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2017 are up by nearly 27,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 15,000 units. PS4 sold 248,801 units for the month of August 2017 and Xbox One sales were at 173,116 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 151,536 (-35.5%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 95,172 units (-37.6%) and Nintendo Switch sales are down by 103,216 units (-43.9%). The PlayStation 4 is down by 5,964 units (-86.4%) year-over-year.

Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales are down by over 152,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are down by over 142,000 units, and Nintendo Switch sales are down by over 44,000 units.

2024 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 3.19 million units, the Xbox Series X|S has sold 1.74 million units, and the Nintendo Switch has sold 1.68 million units.

PS5 Best-Seller as Sales Top 20M Lifetime - Europe Hardware Estimates for August 2024

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in Europe with 286,721 units sold for August 2024, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 20.29 million units lifetime in Europe.

The Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 170,670 units to bring its lifetime sales to 36.58 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 74,059 units to bring their lifetime sales to 7.92 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 1,038 units to bring its lifetime sales to 45.86 million units.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2017 are down by over 68,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by over 31,000 units. PS4 sold 354,875 units for the month of August 2017 and Xbox One sales were at 105,281 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 316,336 (-52.5%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 49,873 units (-40.2%) and Nintendo Switch sales are down by 72,447 units (-29.8%). The PlayStation 4 is down by 5,133 units (-83.2%) year-over-year.

Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales are up by nearly 27,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are down by nearly 10,000 units, and Nintendo Switch sales are up by nearly 26,000 units.

2024 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 2.82 million units, the Nintendo Switch has sold 1.38 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.57 million units.

Switch Best-Seller, PS5 Tops 6M Lifetime - Japan Hardware Estimates for August 2024

The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in Japan with 233,851 units sold for August 2024, according to VGChartz estimates. The Nintendo Switch has now sold an estimated 33.75 million units lifetime in Japan.

The PlayStation 5 sold an estimated 112,286 units to bring its lifetime sales to 6.02 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 5,481 units to bring their lifetime sales to 0.63 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 199 units to bring its lifetime sales to 9.68 million units.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2017 are down by over 42,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are up by over 5,000 units. PS4 sold 154,293 units for the month of August 2017 and Xbox One sales were at 349 units.

Nintendo Switch sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 100,632 units (-30.1%). PlayStation 5 sales are down by 69,109 (-38.1%) and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 4,885 units (-47.1%). The PlayStation 4 is down by 3,432 units (-94.5%) year-over-year.

Looking at sales month-on-month, Nintendo Switch sales are down by nearly 4,000 units, the PlayStation 5 sales are down by nearly 7,000 units, and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by over 10,000 units.

2024 year-to-date, the Nintendo Switch has sold an estimated 1.91 million units, the PlayStation 5 has sold 1.05 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.08 million units.

I think there's something wrong with the estimates.

In the June estimates, the PS5 stood at 59.3m globally. With August estimates, PS5 is "now" at 60.9m units globally.

That's a gap of only 1.6m globally within 2 full months.

Although July and August worldwide sell-through actually sit at ~1.9m combined. If you look at the ww estimates in the articles for July (~963k) and August (~898k) and add them up.
