So I missed the news last week because apparently there wasn't a thread made on it. So I will use this opportunity to ask you the question in the thread title.

In case you missed it like I did, MS is increasing the price of Gamepass for all tiers.

  • New Game Pass Standard launching in Sept, doesn't include day one games. Includes online play but no Cloud gaming. Priced $14.99 per month.

  • Game Pass Ultimate price increase to $19.99/month from $16.99/month

  • PC Game Pass price increase to $11.99/month from $9.99/month

  • Game Pass Core increased from $59.99/year to $74.99/year.

The price hike was predicted by many I assume as it was quite obvious. I personally predicted a Netflix style strategy, keep it cheap for a few years to build a decent install base and then increase the price steadily.

Here's a history of those price hikes. https://flixed.io/netflix-price-hikes

Gamepass golden age was from 2017 to 2024. Netflix is similar with little change from 2007 to 2013.

Netflix then price hiked standard subscription in 2014,2015,2017,2019,2020, and 2022.

I think a price hike in the next 3 years would be a good prediction.

I remember when you could get like a 1$ upgrade path or something? for gamepass, and people stacked up years worth of it.
I remember there were like Oreo Cookies, with free gamepass trials inside.... same with Doritos bags?

Now it's frekking 30$ a month.

Also you were generous with your "3 year prediction of a price hike".
The answer was "A bit over a year later".

Update: For those who guessed October 2025, you would be correct.

Game Pass Ultimate price increase to $29.99/month from $19.99/month

PC Game Pass price increase to $16.49/month from $11.99/month

Now same as before. Guess the next Game Pass price hike. Will the yearly trend continue? Or will they hold off a bit next year?

Within 2 years, I expect it to go up again.
However not by much,... like ~5$.

The thing is, at 30 your already pushing things imo.... They have to know that from the reactions online.
I thing it'll be abit longer before they try again to raise them.

I think the PC gamepass is going to either see a drastic price increase or lose Day1.
Right now they are trying to do the "build up" phase on pc.
Give it 2 years, and things will likely change.

I was expecting 3 years to be for all tiers. So that is my prediction currently. Lower tiers will get a price hike within 2 years. Ultimate I will go with 3 years again (with something else bundled in).

It all depends on how many subscribers they will be losing from this. If they lose over 30%, the odds are they're going to reverse their decision, and maybe instead downgrade the service to not include as many day 1 releases.

Next year,mark my words.

My local all you can eat restaurant raised their prices considerably. They did emphasize the choice in food is now greater than ever.

Me: "My tummy did not grow. I'm just going to pay more for even more food I'm never going to eat".

Replace 'tummy' with 'time' and I don't see how increasingly more expensive game subscriptions won't be losing their appeal. What's the point of 'Best gaming deal' if there is no time to take advantage of it.

Didn't they just raise it to $29.99?

Yes.

This thread was from 1 year ago.

So he came back too it, to say, okay around a year was the answer.

Now he asks once again, when will it go up (again)?  (from it's current 29.99$ price)

1year? 2years? 3years? ect.

I think PC gamepass is the one that loses Day1 releases or gets a price increase first.
And it'll be atleast 2years before we see gamepass go over 30$.

LMAO! That's hilarious! I don't know how I missed this thread but I've been talking about how Gamepass is a loss leader and not profitable for almost seven years now.

I think the amount it went up was more surprising than the timing. I don't think anyone expected it to go all the way from $20 to $30.

Launch (2019) - $15
July 2023 - $17
July 2024 - $20
October 2025 - $30

They've been raising it annually. But with a 50% jump they better stop. It's a ridiculous price rise and increasing it again any time soon would be outrageous.

If MS is going to follow the TV streaming model, next we'll see the introduction of ad supported plans. Back to $15 a month for Ultimate with ads before starting games or even during games when a loading screen pops up or PiP style.

And at first it will seem very little like Netflix / Disney+. Then a month later or with a popular show you have frequent multiple ad breaks per show :/ Now unskippable unlike Cable + DVR. (Although how long until you can't ffwd commercials anymore there since it's all cloud based now)

This move will certainly drive people away / not bother to renew anymore. It's likely meant to get some more money from people that only subscribe for a month for the day 1 AAA game they want to play. But it will be a net loss. Especially since the influx from Series S subscriptions is about to die off completely. PC gamepass is still cheaper, yet at $16.49 a month vs the many sales on PC... Why bother with the Windows store.

Lose 30% of subscriptions but gain 50% in revenue, that’s still a 5% bump in profits.
