Forums - Gaming Discussion - Who do you believe is the most over rated developer?

Bethesda is not over-rated. They fucked up Oblivion pretty badly, I still enjoyed it but it had horrible MASSIVE flaws (such as making all creatures level up with you, sure I'm the savior of the world but a guard can still kick my arse). However their games before that were good enough that I think they are still a very good dev.

R* is over-rated. Their name exists purely on GTA fame and I personally think that game was more fun in 2D.

Rare is over-rated. They are still existing purely on the fact that they were good, not that they are good.

Developers that succeed by the virtue of a single franchise and put out a lot of crappy secondary games like Rockstar are the definition of overrated to me because outside of one single hit IP/franchise they generally don't put out quality anything.

True, id isn't overrated because no one pays attention to them anymore.

I still stand by my statement about Rockstar, though. I have a hard time considering them overrated, especially with how people are raving about GTA IV and the feature set Rockstar included in the game.

Earthworm Jim 3D? Table Tennis? Midnight Club?

I'm sorry but outside of GTA and maybe Max Payne (which is probably far too generous), their offering is not even mediocre, it's just plain bad.

MidNight Club is probably the most fun racing series ever outside of mario kart, so i like Rockstar and in my opinion Rockstar is the best developer, they give their games so much freedom

There are people who still like Britany Spears too.  It's great that you like Midnight Club.  Doesn't make them any less overrated though. ^_^

I feel Nintendo is overrated, with the amount of games they make there are only a couple that are good. Zelda is an average adventure game with a poor story. SMG is one of the worst games i have ever played, i have no idea what people see in this game. Metroid is FPS with all the fun parts taken out. There best Mario was made over 15 years ago. Mario cart has gone down hill over the years too. Brawl appears to be just the same game i played on the GC and N64.

Valve is also very overrated, i have played all the half-Life games and they are very boring adventure/shooter games. The TF2 game on the Orange box is also one of the worst games i have ever played, it was just no fun. The one good game they made was Portal, and that would only get a 9/10 from me.
I disagree with both of these statements.

"Zelda is an average adventure game with a poor story."

"SMG is one of the worst games i have ever played, i have no idea what people see in this game."

" Metroid is FPS with all the fun parts taken out. "

Expand on these and give specific details. I would love to see how you came to these conclusions.

I can't believe you hate one of the best FPS. The orange box is an amazing game, and far superior to the console fps'. I would love to see you expand on this one too.

I don't really know how you want me to expand on these but i will.

I have played most of the Zelda's, the one on the DS is the one i got farthest in, it started off as some boy and some girl, i can't really remember anymore of a story after that. But in each zelda i have played or seen people play its all the same, you need to go off and save something and go and meet odd looking things and play boring dungeons.

SMG, has some of the worst controls and camera i have ever seen in a video game. The camera would never go to what i wanted to see and the controls were just bad, and made even worse by the camera that never went to what i wanted to do. This caused me to fall off ledge after ledge as i tried to get mario where i wanted him to go. He never jumped where i wanted him to go and he never killed who i wanted him to kill. The whole game made it almost impossible to jump on anyone so you had to spin the wii-mote like crazy.

Metroid games are just boring, i never beat any of the ones i played due to boredom, and the colous in the games are just bad, each level looks bad and appears to be painted by a kid. I played a couple of them and put 1-3 hours into them before turning them off.

HL1, i played a long time ago and can't remember all the details but i remember being bored with it, i can't really remember much of a story either. HL2 and the episodes, were full of boring parts and puzzles that did nothing for the game, all they did was extend boring parts of the game. The was also no story, you walk from place to place metting people who go "oh my god its gordon freeman" then they ask you do do some boring crap and the you do it all over again with different people. The games also had the worst driving of any game i have ever played, there was no point to those parts, but to extend the game. If they took out all the crap they never needed, it would of been one of the shortest games ever.

This video shows HL1 and HL2, but the episodes are just like it, so extend the video another 30seconds and you have the entire game.

people try to copy Rockstar, R* are innovators the take chances unlike some other devs who repeatedly put out the same crap, like how many times can u save the princess or save the world from Nazi Germany, rockstar is putting out fresh ideas and they always sell well. other devs are scared to try and pull games like R* has. R* is an example to be looked up to. R* isn't scared to be publicly bashed they take on the ppl who are trying to ruin your games like Jack T ( can say his name or i will get sick) so by saying all that how can u possibly call R* overrated by those standards everyone is overrated

and u might call them overrated but there is more ppl that say they are the best and that isn't the best argument

I just KNEW you were going to use that video to defend your statement.

I would have done the same if i were in your shoes, but i pretty much disagree with everything you said in the previous posts, oh wells, opinions are opinions.

Pay attention , and you would know zelda games are more complex than that.

For Example in Twilight Princess your are not trying to save zelda rather than hyrule, but from a dark force called zant. Along the way you find out that zant is being controlled by ganon , and midna is a princess. You find out about the mutiny in the twilight world. You also acknowlege the history of many races. This is a really weak story right there./sarcasm. It's not the best story , but it's not bad either. If you paid attention you would notice every zelda games story is different.

SMG, has some of the worst controls and camera i have ever seen in a video game. The camera would never go to what i wanted to see and the controls were just bad, and made even worse by the camera that never went to what i wanted to do. See you aren't expanding enough. Tell me how the controls and the camera were bad.

Metroid games are just boring, i never beat any of the ones i played due to boredom, and the colous in the games are just bad, each level looks bad and appears to be painted by a kid. I played a couple of them and put 1-3 hours into them before turning them off.

This is the one that I have the most problem with. Not only , because metroid is my most cherished video game series , but because you just blew off how it was boring, and it doesn't help your statement that it destroys everything else about an fps. Metroid isn't even meant to be an fps, It's was meant , and always will be an adventure game.  I for one think it's far superior to any fps. You not only shoot the hell out of everything, but you also have puzzles, and exploration to consider. Oh , and let's not forget that you get to kill these huge ass bosses. It just seems to me that you expect too much from these games. You expect every single thing to be the best, when it probably won't be.

HL1, i played a long time ago and can't remember all the details but i remember being bored with it, i can't really remember much of a story either. Are you kidding. Half Life/2 is one of the only fpses with a decent story. Even if it's story is as crappy as you say. You can't say too much for any other fps. I have never seen the game as boring. I guess anything that makes you think too much is boring too you. Just as metroid is boring, and if you ever played a puzzling zelda game which I doubt you would be bored by that too.

I can call them over-rated because they are a developer who exists on one game title only (GTA) and attention whore like no other company. I don't know of any other company that goes out of their way to create violent games just so that they can be controversial (Manhunt 2 anyone?).

Then everyone claims they invented the sandbox genre which is blatantly untrue, they may have revived it and translated it but it certainly existed before them.

They are not the gods of game developers that a lot of people make them out to be, many many developers make better games more consistently than R* does, Nintendo, Valve and Blizzard are all examples.

@sc94597
methinks griffin wants an argument
his post had bait written all over it, citing the best points of those games as their weaknesses
if he really feels what he said, then i guess youre right, he likes straightforward games

Dammit, I forgot about Earthworm Jim 3D and Midnight Club. You got me there.

Table Tennis wasn't bad, it just wasn't that great. It was also a budget title. You also forgot to mention Bully. While it was far from great, it wasn't a bad game by any means.

I've never played Bully and I've heard good and bad things about it. Wasn't sure whether to it in the bad list or the good one so I left it off. I'd rather not make too many judgments about games I haven't played; those tend to bite you in the rear if you make them too often.

Agree or disagree, you can at least see where I'm coming from with my opinion though right? ^_^

Definitely. I'm not saying that Rockstar is the greatest developer ever, but their GTA series is pretty spectacular.

Personally, I've never heard them mentioned in the same breath as Blizzard, Valve, or Nintendo, but if people are indeed doing that, I would have to say that yes, they are overrated by some. They don't deserve that kind of recognition compared to those three developers that consistently put together amazing games across several franchises.
