Israeli forces fire on Palestinians during confrontations with Israeli settlers

The Israeli military has carried out several raids and arrests in locations across the occupied West Bank over recent hours, according to Palestinian media, including:

  • The town of Beita, south of Nablus, where Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian youths as they confronted Israeli settlers entering the community.
  • The city of Jenin, where Israeli forces have surrounded a house and demanded that a Palestinian man surrender himself.
  • Arrests have also been reported in the towns of Nilin and Kobar, near Ramallah; al-Eizariya, southeast of Jerusalem; Azzun, east of Qalqilya; Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron; and Yabad and Ajja, near Jenin.

Israeli settler attacks drive 20 Bedouin families from their homes near West Bank’s Jericho

In the occupied West Bank, repeated attacks by Israeli forces and settlers have driven about 20 Palestinian families from their homes in the Bedouin community of al-Malihat, northwest of Jericho, according to the Wafa news agency.

Hassan Malihat, general supervisor of the Al-Baidar Organization for the Defense of Bedouin Rights, told Wafa that about 20 of the 85 families in the community had begun dismantling their tents, following sustained provocation and attacks by Israeli settlers and the Israeli army.

Footage posted on social media and verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad agency showed trucks loaded with possessions driving away from the area at night.

Malihat’s group says the attacks threatened to erase the community, and “open the way for illegal colonial expansion”.

Israeli settlers set up tents in Palestinian community of Masafer Yatta

Israeli settlers have reportedly set up tents for the third time in the occupied West Bank village of Susya in Masafer Yatta, southern Hebron, according to the Quds News Network.

Israeli settlers regularly carry out attacks targeting communities in Masafer Yatta – a collection of Palestinian hamlets – while residents there have also been subject to forcible transfer orders by Israeli authorities.

Israeli forces raid parts of West Bank’s Nablus city

Israeli forces have stormed several neighbourhoods in the city of Nablus in the occupied West Bank, according to our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic. The Israeli forces entered the Rafidia and Al-Makhfiyya districts of the city and raided two residential buildings there, searching the apartments inside.

Five female Palestinian prisoners subjected to severe assaults in Israeli prison: Media Office

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office (ASRA) has denounced the conditions under which female Palestinian prisoners are held inside northern Israel’s Damon prison.

Five female prisoners, including minors, were subjected to severe assaults, including solitary confinement, threats, verbal insults and spitting, the monitor said.

It also reported cases where the administration used tear gas and police dogs against prisoners or imposed humiliating measures during transfers between cells.

Pregnant prisoners and those suffering from cancer are being detained in rooms lacking most basic sanitary conditions, it added.

More Palestinian families flee Israeli settler attacks on West Bank Bedouin community

Thirty more Palestinian families from a Bedouin community in the occupied West Bank have fled their homes, following repeated assaults and harassment from Israeli settlers under the protection of Israeli forces, the Wafa news agency is reporting.

As we reported earlier, 20 families from the al-Mleihat Bedouin community, located northwest of Jericho in the east of the occupied West Bank, had previously packed up their possessions and fled their homes, following an escalation in attacks by Israeli settlers in recent weeks. Prior to the forced displacement, the community was home to 85 families, numbering about 500 people.

One woman, Alia al-Mleihat, told Wafa that her family was forced to flee to the Aqbat Jabr refugee camp, south of Jericho, after armed settlers threatened her and other families at gunpoint.

Hassan al-Mleihat, general coordinator of the Al-Baidar Organization for the Defense of Bedouin Rights, said the remaining families were also preparing to leave amid the escalating aggression from Israeli settlers, which included beatings, theft and poisoning of livestock, blocking of roads and destruction of tents. The harassment was carried out under the protection of Israeli authorities, he said.

Palestinian community in West Bank ‘entirely depopulated’ by Israeli settlers

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has released the footage below to show how an attack earlier today by Israeli settlers forced an entire community in the occupied West Bank to relocate to other areas.

Israeli settlers have increasingly ramped up their violent attacks, many of which are carried out with support from Israeli troops, amid the war on Gaza.

Snapshot of Israeli settler violence in the West Bank

According to the latest figures from the UN’s humanitarian office (OCHA), between the beginning of 2024 and the end of May of this year, at least 2,074 attacks by Israeli settlers resulted in casualties and/or property damage in the West Bank.

Of those, the highest number of settler attacks – 496 – were reported in areas north of Ramallah, followed by 417 incidents near Nablus, in the northern West Bank. Another 383 settler attacks were reported near the southern city of Hebron.

Over the same period, at least 1,038 Palestinians were displaced as a result of settler violence and access restrictions, OCHA said.

Prosecutors drop ‘Maccabi Tel Aviv’ assault cases

A decision to drop criminal charges against fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv football club has ignited controversy in the Netherlands.

Dutch prosecutors took the decision after CCTV footage showing violent behaviour by Israeli hooligans towards Muslim women last November was found to have been erased.

Mahmoud Khalil says he will use platform to ‘shed light’ on Israeli atrocities

Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia University graduate student who the Trump administration is seeking to deport for his pro-Palestine activism, has spoken to reporters from his home.

Khalil told the Reuters news agency that he “did not choose to be in this position” and it has “had a great impact on my life”. But he said he will use his new-found profile to raise public awareness.

“I now have some sort of a platform that I will, of course, use to shed light on the atrocities that Israel is committing against Palestinians and how the US government, how Columbia and other US universities are also complicit in these crimes, because this is what actually matters,” he said.

“What’s happening is that there is a genocide now happening in Palestine, being funded by the US and invested in by Columbia,” Khalil added.

Police swarm protesters outside UK’s Royal Court of Justice

Palestine Action, the activist movement that the British government wants to label a “terrorist group”, says its protests will not stop after police swarmed those gathered outside the top court in central London.

The group is set to be banned after a High Court judge refused to temporarily block it being designated as a terror group. This would make supporting Palestine Action punishable by up to 14 years in prison under the government’s plan.

In the end, the bid for judicial review by Palestine Action was lost. They will not be able to have that government ban postponed, as they had intended.

They argued in court that to make them a proscribed group … would be disproportionate as the group itself does not advocate violence.

[The High Court decision] does raise quite a few issues in terms of what exactly civil disobedience means now, what strategies of civil disobedience now are proscribed or are allowed, and fit within the remit of the law.

But what’s certain as of now is that, as of midnight, Palestine Action will be designated a proscribed group and therefore, any overt support of it, being a member of it, [will] possibly carry a jail sentence of up to 14 years.

Palestine Action appeals High Court decision

A bid by lawyers representing Palestine Action to appeal against a High Court judge’s refusal to temporarily block an imminent ban on the group has begun at the Court of Appeal.

The Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr, Lord Justice Lewis and Lord Justice Edis are hearing the challenge against the decision of Justice Chamberlain, who earlier on Friday ruled against granting “interim relief” to block the ban becoming law over the weekend.

Barristers for the UK’s Home Office are opposing the appeal bid, having also defended the bid for the temporary block.

The hearing is being held at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

Houthis ‘prepared for any escalation’, call for Arab boycott of Israel

The Houthis in Yemen, who earlier today organised another large pro-Palestine protest, read out a message at the rally to condemn the “silence” from most Arab and Islamic countries about the war on Gaza.

“We condemn the global silence and complicity, and the reliance on deceptive verbal stances that encourage the enemy to persist in its crimes,” the group also said in reference to Israel.

The statement said the Yemeni people will not retreat from their support of Palestinians, and that the threats from Israel, the US and their allies do not intimidate them as they are “prepared for any escalation, regardless of its scale or source”.

“We call on Arabs and Muslims, both peoples and governments, to boycott the goods and products of Israeli and American companies.”

Lebanese resistance will not give up weapons: Hezbollah’s Qassem

Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Naim Qassem has made the following remarks at a gathering in Beirut to mark Ashura, a day of commemoration that takes place annually on the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar:

  • To those who demand that the resistance hand over its weapons: Demand instead that the aggressor [Israel] leaves.
  • Is it reasonable that you do not criticise the aggression and always aim your criticism at your own people and countrymen? And you tell them, ‘First, you must give up your weapons!’
  • If some choose to surrender, that is their business – but as for us, we do not accept it.
  • The real achievement is to liberate our land and our homeland – this is our call to you, and we are ready.
  • Today, we are in the heart of Lebanon, living normally, playing our role, we have MPs, we participate at the heart of government, we amend laws, and we express our opinions just as others do, all within the framework of the law.

‘Tactic of direct action cannot be proscribed’: Palestine Action

The UK-based Palestine Action movement, which will be designated a “terrorist” organisation after midnight local time for acting against Israel’s war on Gaza, says the government “had to impose the most draconian attack on civil liberties to please the pro-Israel lobby”.

“To be clear, they cannot proscribe the TACTIC of direct action for Palestine,” the group said in a statement, also welcoming civil disobedience to resist the proscription.

“This is a moment that the British state will likely come to regret. It’s a signal to all of us who are willing to resist, to make the ban unenforceable.”

Three Palestinians injured after Israeli settlers launch attack on Ramallah town

Three Palestinians were injured while repelling a violent attack by Israeli settlers in the town of Sinjil, located north of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

Sinjil mayor Moataz Tawafsha was quoted by the Wafa news agency as saying dozens of settlers stormed the area.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said two people were beaten by the settlers, while a third sustained injuries when the settlers tried to kidnap him. The incident included attacks on several vehicles as well.

Israeli soldiers launch West Bank raids, settlers attack ambulance

Israeli military forces have launched more raids across the occupied West Bank, including one in the village of Tayasir, located east of Nablus, where a home was attacked.

In Kafr Qaddum east of Qalqilya, soldiers deployed in one neighbourhood, but no arrests or injuries were reported. Another raid took place in the town of Beit Fajjar, located south of Bethlehem, Wafa reported.

In Hebron, the towns of ad-Dhahiriya and Dura were stormed by Israeli forces, who fired tear gas and sound grenades at Palestinian shops and homes before withdrawing.

Another attack by violent Israeli settlers was reported in the towns of Beita and Osarin south of Nablus, carried out with protection from soldiers, who fired live bullets and tear gas canisters. The Palestine Red Crescent Society said one of its ambulances was attacked and damaged by the settlers.

Main events on July 4th

  • Hamas said it responded “positively” to a 60-day ceasefire proposal backed by the US, which would see the release of 10 live captives held in Gaza and 18 deceased, in exchange for Israel allowing aid into the enclave and stopping offensive military operations.
  • The Israeli military said it has “operational control” more than 65 percent of Gaza as it killed dozens more Palestinians, including more starving aid seekers at sites run by the heavily criticised Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
  • The Israeli army also confirmed it was behind the assassination of a man in Beirut on Thursday, describing him as a “terrorist” who smuggled weapons for Iran’s Quds Force.
  • The United Kingdom’s Royal Court of Justice rejected Palestine Action’s appeal to postpone government proscription, meaning the activist movement is now designated a “terrorist” group for rejecting Israel’s war on Gaza.
  • More raids by Israeli soldiers and violent attacks by settlers were recorded across the occupied West Bank, leading to clashes with Palestinian residents.

The ceasefire proposal Hamas responded to

Al Jazeera has received the basic translated framework of the proposal:

  • Duration: Ceasefire for 60 days. President Trump guarantees Israel’s commitment to a ceasefire for the agreed duration.
  • Release of captives: Release of 10 live Israeli captives and 18 deceased from the “List of 58.” The releases will take place on days one, seven, 30, 50, and 60 as follows:
    • Release of eight live captives on day one.
    • Release of five deceased captives on day seven.
    • Release of five deceased captives on day 30.
    • Release of two live captives on day 50.
    • Release of eight deceased captives on day 60.
  • Humanitarian Aid: Aid will be immediately sent to Gaza upon Hamas’s approval of the ceasefire agreement. The agreement will ensure the arrival of aid in sufficient and intensive quantities, as in the agreement of January 19, 2025, regarding humanitarian assistance.
  • Aid will be distributed through channels agreed upon, including the United Nations and the Palestine Red Crescent.
  • Israeli Military Activities: All Israeli offensive military activities in Gaza will cease upon the agreement going into effect. During the ceasefire, military and surveillance air operations over Gaza will pause for 10 hours daily, or 12 hours on days when captive and prisoner exchanges are taking place.

Negotiations:

  • On day one, negotiations will begin under the supervision of the mediators/guarantors regarding arrangements for a permanent ceasefire, including:
    • a. Keys and conditions for exchanging all remaining Israeli captives for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
    • b. Matters related to redeployment and withdrawal of Israeli forces, as well as long-term security arrangements, in Gaza.
    • c. “Day after” arrangements in Gaza, which may be raised by either party.

Aid, prisoner release expected to be discussed in ceasefire negotiations

Political analyst Xavier Abu Eid says that while “there is willingness to reach an agreement” on a Gaza ceasefire, Hamas’s response to the latest proposal marks “the start of another difficult process”.

“What we have here is a positive response by Hamas to the offer that has been presented, but it is still an invitation for negotiations. There are still several issues that Hamas and other Palestinian factions would like to see very clearly” outlined in that process, Abu Eid told Al Jazeera.

Those issues include humanitarian aid access to Gaza, the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, and what will happen after the 60-day ceasefire ends. “These are certainly not minor issues,” he said.

Abu Eid added that it will be important to see what type of negotiations Netanyahu will conduct in Washington, DC, where the Israeli prime minister will meet Trump at the White House on Monday.

Ceasefire framework ‘vague’, offers ‘no guarantee’ on war’s permanent end

Mohamad Elmasry, a professor of media studies at the Doha Institute of Graduate Studies, says people should temper their expectations as the Gaza ceasefire proposal contains vague language and no guarantees on implementation.

“There’s no guarantee that we’ll get to Day 50 of this agreement, and then there’s no guarantee that the war will end,” he told Al Jazeera.

“There’s a lot of vague language about how the Israeli troops are going to be redeployed inside of Gaza. There’s vague language about negotiations that are supposed to take place about further prisoner-and-captive exchanges, and then there’s vague language about the permanent end to the war.”

Elmasry added that Hamas appears to be stuck between a rock and a hard place, and had little option but to agree to move forward with the proposal.

“If they don’t accept, then they’ll be labelled as the ones who didn’t want peace. That’s how it will be sold in the United States and in Israel,” he explained.

“But I do think that the fact that Hamas is taking this so seriously suggests that there is a level of pure desperation on the part of the Palestinian side. There’s so much death and destruction [in Gaza].”

Israeli military arrests two Palestinians during West Bank raid, settlers attack ambulance

An Israeli military convoy has stormed the occupied West Bank village of Rummana, west of Jenin, and arrested two Palestinian men, the Wafa news agency reports.

In the Jabal Qamas area south of Nablus, Israeli settlers, under the protection of Israeli soldiers, have attacked a Palestinian Red Crescent Society ambulance, according to Wafa.

Israeli soldiers and settlers fired bullets and tear gas canisters during clashes with local Palestinian residents. No injuries have been reported.

Israeli forces carry out raids across the occupied West Bank

Palestinian news agency Wafa is reporting a number of Israeli military raids across the occupied West Bank today. They include a raid on the town of Qarawat Bani Hassan in the Salfit governorate, with local sources telling Wafa that the Israeli forces ransacked several homes.

The Israeli forces are also reported to have raided Qalqilya, storming the city’s eastern entrance and searching several homes for more than three hours today.

Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are reporting that there has been an Israeli drone attack on the town of Shebaa in southern Lebanon. Shebaa is located across two steep, rocky mountainsides that straddle Lebanon’s borders with Syria as well as the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

One killed in southern Lebanon

The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health is reporting that one person has been killed and two others injured in an Israeli drone attack in Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon.

What has happened in southern Lebanon today?

Israel has carried out three drone attacks on towns in southern Lebanon, resulting in one death and several injuries.

  • An “Israeli enemy drone attack on a vehicle” in the Saf al-Hawa area in the city of Bint Jbeil “killed one person and wounded two others”, Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health said in a statement carried by the official National News Agency (NNA).
  • Earlier, the ministry also reported that a separate Israeli drone attack wounded one person in the town of Shebaa, with the NNA saying that the raid hit a house.
  • Israel also launched a drone attack on the town of Chaqra, in the Bint Jbeil district. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said two people were wounded in the attack.

This is just the latest wave of near-daily Israeli violations of the November ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah.
