Palestinians killed in shooting near Gaza aid site, reports say

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c79e24x73xno

Palestinians are reported to have been killed and wounded in another shooting as they gathered near an aid distribution site in central Gaza.

According to Palestinian journalists, those killed were fired on by Israeli troops. Information on Saturday's incident is scarce as the internet has been down in Gaza for more than two days.

There has been no comment from the IDF as yet. In previous incidents, the Israeli military said troops opened fire when suspects approached them in what they deemed a threatening manner.

Many of those waiting to pick up aid may not know that the distribution sites run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation - backed by Israel and the US - are closed until Sunday.

The organisation posts updates on its Facebook page, which only those with e-sim cards on their phones are able to access, because of the internet blackout.

This has only added to the confusion that has increasingly surrounded the delivery of aid in Gaza, with each day seeing incidents in which people are shot at by Israeli troops or local gunmen.

Aid supplies and the internet are vital for people in Gaza - the current lack of both lifelines is rendering their plight even more desperate.

Large numbers of Palestinians appear to be staying near the aid distribution sites - one in the Netzarim Corridor in central Gaza and three others further south - so that they will be ready to get hold of food parcels when and if they are opened.

There is also increasing concern being expressed by aid groups and medics that Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza may lose its ability to provide essential treatment for those with injuries from shootings near distribution points in Rafah.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned that Nasser Hospital is struggling to function. An ICRC source initially suggested most of Nasser Hospital's healthcare workers had left - following the expansion of evacuation orders from the IDF - but later clarified that the hospital had lost around 10% of its staff.

One of the doctors who has recently been working at Nasser Hospital, Dr Feroze Sidwa, has called for international support to keep it going. "If international law has any remaining relevance, Nasser must be protected and resupplied, and its staff must be protected immediately," Dr Sidwa said.

Dr Victoria Rose, who was working at Nasser hospital in May, issued an even more urgent warning: "This is the only hospital in the south of Gaza. Nowhere else has ITU beds, a CT scanner, oxygen generating capability, haemodialysis or a blood bank. "Hundreds of patients will instantly die and all surgery will now have to take place in tents."

Emergency service says 1 killed, 19 injured in central Israel

We reported a short while ago that an Iranian missile struck central Israel, resulting in at least 10 injuries.

A spokesperson from the national emergency service, Magen David Adom, has now told Israel’s Channel 12 that one person has been killed and 19 others injured following a direct missile strike on residential buildings in the area. Three of the injured are in serious condition, according to the source.

US ambassador to Israel says had ‘rough’ night amid strikes

Mike Huckabee says he had to go to shelters five times overnight amid Iran’s missile barrage. “It’s now Shabbat here. Should be quiet. Probably won’t be. Entire nation under orders to stay near shelter,” the US ambassador to Israel posted on X.

Huckabee, a staunch supporter of Israel who has said there’s “no such thing” as the West Bank, said earlier this week that he the prospect of Israel launching a strike against Iran without US approval or coordination was unlikely.

“I just don’t in my mind see that that would be something that would likely happen because of the closeness of the relationship and the trust, and that’s the word I would emphasise – there is a trust between the US and Israel,” he told Israeli news outlet Ynet.

“I often say: we have friends, we have allies, but we only have one partner, Israel, and when I say that, I don’t mean that we don’t have deep relationships with other countries,” Huckabee said.

“But there isn’t really any country with which we have the level of sharing on intelligence, military hardware, strategy, common goals – in large measure because we share a common foundation of a civilization based on the Judeo-Christian worldview.”

Poor US, only 'partner' left is Israel, and what friends do you still have? Trump burned all your bridges. How much more proof does anyone need to call this the US-Israel war on Iran. US is deeply involved. The US is at war with Iran.

Iran says nuclear talks with US ‘meaningless’ after Israel attack

Speaking to the semi-official Tasnim news agency, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei accused the US of supporting Israel’s assault on Iran, saying the attack would not have happened without Washington’s permission.

“The other side [the US] acted in a way that makes dialogue meaningless,” Baqaei said of talks the US has held with Tehran in recent months to curb its nuclear programme.

“You cannot claim to negotiate and at the same time divide work by allowing the Zionist regime [Israel] to target Iran’s territory,” he added.

Oman’s foreign minister working to contain ‘dangerous escalation’

The Omani Foreign Ministry says Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi has held a series of phone calls with his counterparts around the world “as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to contain the dangerous military escalation and tensions” in the Middle East.

Those tensions were “triggered by Israel’s direct attacks on Iranian territory”, the ministry said in a statement shared on social media.

It added that Albusaidi stressed during the calls “the importance of halting the aggression … in order to prevent further bloodshed, destruction, and loss of life, and to safeguard the security, stability, and the supreme interests of the region and its peoples”.

On Friday, the minister condemned Israel’s attack on Iran as “illegal, unjustifiable and a grave threat to regional stability”.

Military says drones downed over central Israel

Israel’s military said it has intercepted a number of aerial drones over the country’s central region. The drones were detected and air raid alerts were activated in several areas of the country, the military said.

No details were given on possible damage, casualties or where the drones originated.

Venezuelan president condemns Israel’s attacks on Iran as ‘neo-Nazi Zionism’

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has condemned Israel’s bombardment of Iran, describing it as a “criminal assault” that “violates international law and the United Nations Charter”.

“No to war, no to fascism, no to neo-Nazi Zionism,” Maduro said in a statement.

Maduro also accused France, Germany, Britain and the US of supporting “the 21st-century Hitler”, referring to Prime Minister Netanyahu, “against the noble and peaceful Iranian people”.

Iran’s strikes against Israel will continue: Officials

‘Everything was shaking’: Israelis recount Iranian strikes on Tel Aviv

Following Iran’s retaliatory attacks, Israeli firefighters worked for hours to free people trapped in a high-rise building in Tel Aviv.

Resident Chen Gabizon said he ran to an underground shelter after receiving an alert. “After a few minutes, we just heard a very big explosion. Everything was shaking, smoke, dust, everything was all over the place,” he said.

Iranian missiles targeted sites across Israel, killing at least three people and injuring dozens more.

Israeli army reports rocket attack from Gaza

A military statement says alerts were activated at 10:15am (07:15 GMT) around the fence with Gaza.

Two rockets were detected that fell in an open area with no reported casualties, it said. The rocket fire comes after Israel and Iran exchanged heavy strikes overnight.

Iran-allied Hamas has repeatedly thanked Tehran for its military and financial support to the group in its fight against Israel.

Dozens killed in Israeli attack on residential complex in Tehran: Report

About 60 people, including 20 children, have been killed in an Israeli attack on a housing complex in the Iranian capital, according to Iranian state TV.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations said on Friday that 78 people had been killed and 320 wounded in the first wave of strikes by Israel.

Tehran called on its citizens to unite in defense of the country as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged them to rise up against their government.

Still a ‘small window’ for negotiations to prevent all-out war

Muhanad Seloom from the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies says Iran sent messages to European nations saying it will launch a “measured” response against Israel, dismissing as rhetoric Iranian news reports suggesting it will also target infrastructure of Israeli allies in the Middle East.

“What we’re looking at is a dynamic and developing situation between Israel and Iran. But still to me it looks like there’s a small window to bring Iran back to negotiations,” he said.

“What we saw last night was an attack by Iran, but it was below the threshold of an open war. The Iranians have a lot of internal pressure so they had to respond, but they did it in a way that would not bring in the United States and European states,” Seloom told Al Jazeera.

“It doesn’t make sense for Iran now, with no good reason, to attack these locations – US installations for even embassies of European states.”

He said “even though Iran has been bruised severely”, its nuclear sites appear not to be completely destroyed so there is still room for negotiations with the United States on its nuclear programme.

The Israeli military said its air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities resulted in the deaths of nine leading Iranian nuclear scientists.

“During the Israeli air force strikes at the onset of Operation Rising Lion, nine senior scientists and experts, who advanced the Iranian regime’s nuclear weapons programme, were eliminated,” a statement said, listing the names of those killed. “Their elimination represents a significant blow to the Iranian regime’s ability to acquire weapons of mass destruction.”

The military said the strikes were carried out on the basis of “precise intelligence gathered by the intelligence directorate”.

Israel says Iran will ‘pay a heavy price’ for missile barrage

Israel Katz has warned “Tehran will burn” if Iran continues firing missiles. Speaking after an assessment meeting with the army’s chief of staff, the defence minister said Iran will pay “a heavy price” for harming Israelis.

Katz directly addressed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. “The Iranian dictator is taking the citizens of Iran hostage, bringing about a reality in which they, and especially Teheran’s residents, will pay a heavy price for the flagrant harm inflicted upon Israel’s citizens. If Khamenei continues to fire missiles at the Israeli home front, Tehran will burn,” Katz said in a statement.

Israel’s Ben Gurion airport closed until further notice

Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport is closed until further notice, a spokeswoman says, as Israel and Iran continue to trade fire for a second day. “There is no date or day set to reopen the airport,” airport spokeswoman Lisa Diver said.

Images from the airport showed deserted check-in counters and passenger lounges while flight information boards indicated all flights were cancelled. Other countries in the region, including Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, said they’re reopening their airspace on Saturday.

The military says the soldiers were injured in a ballistic missile attack on central Israel in the early hours as Tehran carried out retaliatory strikes on its archrival following Israel’s attacks.

They were taken to hospitals and have since been released, according to a military statement. This is the first confirmation of Israeli military casualties since the escalation of hostilities between Iran and Israel began two days ago.

Israeli public united in mission to halt Iran’s nuclear programme

Israeli affairs analyst Dan Perry says the public is largely united behind efforts to target Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, viewing it as a rare point of national consensus. “There definitely is trepidation and understanding that Iran has capabilities that are far beyond what Israel has experienced from the Houthis and even Hezbollah,” Perry told Al Jazeera.

Despite the losses, Perry described the prevailing sentiment in Israel as one of “cautious optimism about success in a mission that enjoys consensus”. “Israelis don’t agree on much but that Iran’s Islamic Republic government should not have a nuclear weapon is perhaps the only thing to make them come around.”

Three members of Iranian Revolutionary Guard killed

Three members of the elite Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps have been killed during ongoing Israeli attacks in Zanjan province, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reports. Zanjan is a mountainous region in the northwestern part of the country.

Israel’s military said it’s striking dozens of missile launchers in Iran after announcing it targeted air defences with a wave of attacks on the Tehran area. The Israeli air force “continues striking dozens of surface-to-surface missile launchers in Iran”, it said in a statement.

Iran names new aerospace chief to replace one killed by Israel

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has appointed a new head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ air force to replace the one killed by an Israeli strike. Iranian forces claim to have downed Israeli warplanes

Iran’s army says it air defence systems hit another Israeli F-35 fighter jet. Citing the army’s public relations department, IRNA news agency said the incident occurred in the country’s west. The pilot reportedly ejected from the jet but his current whereabouts remain unknown.

Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee denied “fake publications by Iranian media outlets that the Iranian military succeeded in shooting down Israeli fighter jets”.

In a dramatic development, Iran has claimed that it downed two Israeli F-35 fighter jets on Friday. If true, Rifat Jawaid says this would mark a huge shift in the ongoing conflict that Benjamin Netanyahu started by attacking Iran. The claim of downing of F-35 jets came after Iran pounded dozens of ballistic missiles targeting Tel Aviv and other cities. Tehran has vowed to launch more missile attacks.

Preemptive strike? The media and Israel’s attack on Iran

Israel has launched an unprovoked assault on Iran including strikes on nuclear facilities and assassinations of several senior military commanders and scientists. In front of the world’s media, however, the Netanyahu government is spinning the attack as “preemptive”.

Preemptive strikes are given some legal protection by international law and the United Nations charter. However, clear-cut evidence justifying the use of a preemptive strike is seldom provided by the aggressor country.

Preemptive strikes are not the same as a preventive war, which is a violation of international law.

This is a preemptive war, not a single strike... And preemptive strikes are only justified for imminent threats of invasion. No such thing was happening, negotiations were scheduled for tomorrow.

It's simple, Israel-US-UK-France declared war on Iran. Canada's Mark Carney cheering them on.

‘Cut ties with Israel’: Pakistan pledges support for Iran

Pakistan expressed its full support for Iran and called for “Muslim unity against Israel” in the aftermath of the ongoing attacks.

“We stand with Iran and will support them at every international forum to protect their interests,” Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said during his address at the national assembly.

“Israel has targeted Iran, Yemen, and Palestine. If Muslim nations don’t unite now, each one of them will face the same fate.”

He urged all Muslim nations to “immediately cut ties with Israel” and called for the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to convene an urgent session to formulate a joint strategy.

Asif said Pakistan has deep ties with Iran and Islamabad “stands by Tehran in this difficult time”.  Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar called the Israeli attack on Iran “a brazen violation of Iran’s sovereignty”.

Pakistan and Iran share a 750km (466 miles) border in Pakistan’s southwest and Iran’s southeast.

Strait of Hormuz closure under review by Iran: State media

The closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz is being seriously reviewed by Iran, according to local media reports quoting statements by Esmail Kosari, a member of the parliament’s security commission.

The Strait of Hormuz, which lies between Oman and Iran, is the world’s most important gateway for oil shipping. Even the suggestion of such a move has already sent shockwaves through global markets, and the price of oil has risen.

“Israel has refrained from hitting in any severe fashion the oil infrastructure of Iran. Should that change, that will obviously have a much more dramatic impact,” Taufiq Rahim, an independent geopolitical strategist, told Al Jazeera.

Yeah that would cut off Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and Eastern Saudi Arabia.

Shanghai Cooperation Organisation condemns Israel’s strikes on Iran

The China-led 10-state regional group says it strongly condemns Israel’s military strikes on Iran and expressed serious concern over the escalation of the situation in the Middle East.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a Eurasian security and political group, said in a statement that Israel’s act targeted civilian and nuclear facilities, causing civilian casualties.

“This seriously violated the principles of international law and the UN Charter, undermined Iran’s sovereignty, undermined regional and international security, and had a serious impact on global peace and stability,” it said.
