Report: US privately tells Israel it will accept small-scale Rafah offensive

A report from US news site Politico says that senior US officials have told their Israeli counterparts that the administration of President Biden will support the targeting of “high-value Hamas targets in and underneath Rafah”.

The report cites four unnamed US officials, who told Politico that the US wants Israel to avoid a large-scale invasion of the southern Gaza City, where some 1.5 million displaced Palestinians are sheltered after fleeing Israeli bombardment in other parts of the Strip.

“In private conversations, top administration officials have signaled to Israel that they could support a plan more akin to counterterrorism operations than all-out war, four US officials said”, the report says.

“That, the administration officials argue, would minimize civilian casualties, decimate Hamas’ ranks and avoid scenes that have led to souring public opinion on Israel’s campaign and Biden’s handling of the war.”

The US has long said that it would require a plan to protect civilians in Rafah before it supported Israel’s promised Rafah invasion. Today, Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters that the US has yet to see such a plan.

Israel’s defence minister hints to imminent Rafah ground operation

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has hinted the Israeli army is imminently preparing to launch its ground operation in Rafah, according to media reports. Speaking during a visit to Israeli army officers in Gaza City, Gallant warned “those who think we are delaying [the invasion of Rafah] will soon see there is no place we cannot reach.”

The Jerusalem Post also quoted him as saying, “We will bring every single person involved in the October 7 massacre to justice, we will either kill them or try them in Israel.” “There is no safe space, not here, not outside Gaza, not across the entire Middle East,” Gallant added.

He also praised recent efforts to send more humanitarian aid to Gaza because it will “weaken Hamas while strengthening our grasp” on the strip.

Israel parliament approves 2024 budget that ‘guarantees continuation of war’

Israel’s parliament has given its final approval for an amended 2024 state budget to fund the country’s war against Hamas in Gaza, now in its sixth month. The amended budget adds tens of billions of extra spending on defence and compensation to households and businesses hurt by Hamas’s attack on October 7.

The Times of Israel reports Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party welcomed the vote, noting it managed to pass “a budget that guarantees the continuation of the war until complete victory, and benefits the citizens of Israel and the state’s economy”.

UNRWA staff member killed, 22 wounded in Rafah warehouse strike

At least one staff member from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has been killed and another 22 injured in an Israeli attack on a food distribution centre in Rafah, southern Gaza. “Today’s attack on one of the very few remaining UNRWA distribution centres in the Gaza Strip comes as food supplies are running out, hunger is widespread and, in some areas, turning into famine,” said UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini.

“Every day, we share the coordinates of all our facilities across the Gaza Strip with parties to the conflict. The Israeli army received the coordinates including of this facility yesterday.” More than 400 people were killed while seeking shelter in UN facilities in Gaza, UNRWA said. More than 150 of the agency’s structures were hit despite having protected status under international law.

“The United Nations, its personnel, premises and assets must be protected at all times … I am calling once again for an independent inquiry into these violations and the need for accountability,” Lazzarini added.

Attack on UN aid centre targeted Hamas commander: Israel military

Israel says its air strike on a UN food distribution centre in southern Gaza killed a Hamas commander after the UN said one staff member was killed and 22 others were wounded. The Israeli military said the strike killed Mohammad Abu Hasna, whom the military described as a Hamas fighter who provided intelligence on Israeli troop positions, and was “also involved in taking control of humanitarian aid and distributing it to Hamas terrorists”.

In a statement, Hamas said Abu Hasna was a member of its police force and condemned his killing as a “cowardly assassination” meant to disrupt aid distribution. Hamas identified another of the five killed as the head of an emergency committee for Rafah, Nidal al-Sheikh Eid.

Blinken comments on Israeli attack on UNRWA facility

In his news conference, the US secretary of state has told reporters that the US offers its condolences to the families and loved ones of those who “apparently” were killed in today’s bombing of an aid distribution facility operated by the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees. According to UNRWA, the attack killed at least one of its staff members and injured an additional 22 other people.

Blinken admitted that he did not know “the facts” of the incident, but said that he spoke to the Israeli army about it, which told him that they were investigating. He said that the incident reinforces “the imperative of having much better and much more consistent deconfliction,” between humanitarian workers and the Israeli army, adding that the people working to distribute desperately needed humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip must “be able to do their jobs with as much security and as much confidence as possible”.

The Israeli military, the Israeli government, have a responsibility to make sure that humanitarian work can be carried out,” he continued, including not striking “clearly marked” humanitarian facilities. Israeli attacks on aid trucks and Palestinians seeking the aid carried by those trucks have been frequent over the last several weeks, including in northern Gaza, which is on the verge of famine.

Israel attacking aid centres; war on Gaza ‘has to stop’: UN relief chief

The killing of an UNRWA aid worker at a distribution centre is “devastating” for crucial humanitarian relief deliveries in Gaza, the UN’s top emergency aid official says. “How are we to maintain aid operations when our teams and supplies are constantly under threat? They must be protected,” Martin Griffiths posted on X.

“This war has to stop.”

Aid groups provide new evidence of Israel attack on staff members

Medical Aid for Palestinians and the International Rescue Committee provided new details of an Israeli air strike on a residential compound housing humanitarian workers and their families.

The January attack wounded several team members despite coordinates being shared with the Israeli military, which offered six different explanations that “ have not provided clarity” as to why it happened, a statement said.

“The variety of responses highlights a continued lack of transparency regarding what occurred. It is clear from this experience the Israeli military and government are either unable or unwilling to properly investigate this serious incident,” the groups said.

The statement called on Israel’s allies, including the US and UK, to launch “a full, independent and timebound investigation into the 18 January incident – and all reported attacks on deconflicted facilities and personnel”.

“As current suppliers of arms and munitions to Israel, governments such as the UK and the US have a particular responsibility to hold Israel accountable for this and other attacks on aid workers and civilians.”

Israeli tank strike killed ‘clearly identifiable’ Reuters reporter: UN report

An Israeli tank killed Reuters reporter Issam Abdallah in Lebanon in October by firing two 120mm rounds at a group of “clearly identifiable journalists” in violation of international law, a UN probe has found.

The investigation by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon – summarized in a report seen by the Reuters news agency – said its personnel had not recorded any exchange of fire across the border between Israel and Lebanon for more than 40 minutes before the Israeli Merkava tank opened fire.

“It is assessed that there was no exchange of fire across the Blue Line at the time of the incident. The reason for the strikes on the journalists is not known,” the report said. Besides killing Abdallah, the two tank rounds also wounded six other journalists at the scene.

“The [Israeli military] deplores any injury to uninvolved parties and does not deliberately shoot at civilians, including journalists,” army spokesperson Nir Dinar said. “The [Israeli military] considers the freedom of the press to be of utmost importance while clarifying that being in a warzone is dangerous.”

MSF condemns last months’ Jenin hospital attacks

The international medical charity Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF) says Israel’s attack was just the “latest act of appalling violence” at the facility. “In the last months, our team has witnessed bullets and tear gas grenades being fired at the facility, a minor being killed, ambulances being obstructed, and healthcare professionals being targeted,” Samuel Johann, MSF project coordinator in Jenin, said in a series of posts on X.

“Shooting people in a hospital, or any act of violence in a healthcare facility, is completely unacceptable. We unequivocally condemn the continued attacks on healthcare facilities.”

Video shows destruction of Hamad City as Israeli troops withdraw

Palestinian photographer Hassan Aslaih has posted video to his Instagram account showing the destruction of the Hamad City residential complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, after Israeli forces began their withdrawal from the area.

The Hamad City complex was built with funding from the state of Qatar, and has been heavily bombarded since the start of the war on Gaza. It experienced further destruction in recent days as Israeli ground forces clashed with Palestinian fighters there.

EU, 5 other nations call on Israel to open additional crossings to Gaza

The European Union and five other countries in a joint statement called on Israel to open additional crossings besides the Cyprus maritime corridor so more aid can reach the coastal enclave.

“The ministers agreed there is no meaningful substitute to land routes via Egypt and Jordan and entry points from Israel into Gaza for aid delivery at scale,” it said, following a virtual ministerial meeting.

“The ministers underscored the need for Israel to open additional crossings so more aid can reach Gaza, including the north, and to ease overall customs restrictions to facilitate an increased flow of life-saving humanitarian assistance.”

Getting aid into Gaza ‘very unpredictable’

Janti Soeripto, president of the charity Save the Children US, says it is “very unpredictable” which aid trucks can make it into Gaza and which ones are rejected.

“I saw a wooden toy box with games for children being rejected because the box was made of wood, and it had to be packed in carton boxes,” Soeripto, who was at the Rafah crossing in January, told Al Jazeera.

“Hygiene kits with soap, blankets and sanitary pads for women got rejected because there was a nail clipper in it. The list goes on.”

Moreover, Soeripto said even if trucks make it into Gaza, distribution inside was “problematic” amid the ongoing fighting in the coastal enclave. “There’s so much rubble and destruction around that it is physically even hard to actually get the last mile in order to deliver our supplies when they make it in,” she added.

Six killed in latest Israeli attack on aid seekers

The Wafa news agency is reporting that Israeli forces killed at least six people in their latest attack on Palestinians waiting for humanitarian aid at the Kuwait Roundabout in Gaza City. The agency said some 83 people who were wounded in the attack have been transferred to the Shifa Medical Complex in the city.

Israeli forces have stepped up their attacks on the Kuwait Roundabout – an area where people gather in large groups to wait for aid trucks –  in recent weeks. On Monday night, Israeli forces killed 11 people waiting for food aid at the roundabout.

It's just pathetic the world only briefly cares when 100+ people die at once. Keep the numbers for single incidents in the dozens and the US is fine with it.

Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, UK, US condemn deadly Houthi attack

The embassies of Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the UK and the US issued a joint statement reiterating their condemnation of a Houthi attack that killed three sailors on March 7.

“The deaths of at least 2 Filipino and 1 Vietnamese sailors is the inevitable consequence of the Houthis’ indiscriminate and reckless attacks on international merchant vessels,” the statement said.

“It is critical that the Houthis cease these attacks immediately.”

New propaganda offensive, gonna flood Gaza with aid (while continuing to bomb and kill aid seekers I guess)

Israel says it will ‘flood’ Gaza with humanitarian aid

Israel will attempt to “flood” Gaza with humanitarian aid using a variety of routes, a spokesman for the Israeli military said, as global pressure mounts over a looming famine in the besieged enclave.

“We are trying to flood the area, to flood it with humanitarian aid,” Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari has told a group of foreign reporters. “We are learning and improving and doing different changes so as not to create a routine but to create a diversity of ways that we can enter.”

The comments came as aid agencies accuse Israel of preventing humanitarian aid from entering Gaza, and of thwarting distribution efforts inside the enclave by destroying infrastructure and killing police officials guarding aid convoys.

They certainly made it routine to kill aid seekers.

US working on maritime route as part of strategy of ‘flooding the zone’ with aid

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said Washington is attempting to set up a multinational humanitarian corridor for Gaza as part of a wider strategy of “flooding the zone” with aid. The US announced last week that it will be building a temporary pier on Gaza’s Mediterranean coast that will enable the distribution of up to two million meals a day in the Palestinian enclave.

Blinken – who spoke with officials from Britain, Cyprus, UAE, Qatar, the EU and the UN on Wednesday – emphasised that the maritime route is a “complement to, not a substitute” for other ways of delivering aid. “In particular, overland routes remain the most critical way to get assistance in and then to people who need it,” he said.

UN says Israel turned back an aid truck after finding scissors used in children’s medical kit

Israel has been restricting the entry of humanitarian supplies into Gaza as part of a highly complicated inspection system.

The UN said a truck loaded with aid was turned back on Monday because it had scissors used in children’s medical kits. In response, Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) accused the UN of lying, saying “this did not happen”.

Janti Soeripto, president and chief executive of Save the Children in the US, tells Al Jazeera what she has witnessed during aid inspections on Gaza’s border.

US pause on funding for UNRWA may become permanent

The Biden administration is preparing for a US pause on funding for UNRWA to become permanent due to opposition in Congress, according to the Reuters news agency. The US is UNRWA’s largest donor, providing up to $400m annually. It halted funding for UNRWA in January after Israel claimed 12 of the agency’s 13,000 employees in Gaza took part in Hamas’s attacks on October 7.

UNRWA says Israel has yet to provide further details of these claims.

Several countries, including Canada and Sweden, have since resumed funding, but bipartisan opposition in the US Congress makes it unlikely that Washington will resume regular donations anytime soon, Reuters reported.

At present, there is a supplemental funding bill in the US Congress that includes military aid to Israel and Ukraine, and contains a provision that would block UNRWA from receiving funds if it becomes law, it said. The Biden administration supports the bill.

While some Democratic senators and some progressive House members have opposed an indefinite ban on funding UNRWA, any new donations need the support of at least some Republicans, who hold a majority in the House of Representatives. Many of them have expressed their opposition to UNRWA.

“UNRWA is a front, plain and simple,” Republican lawmaker Brian Mast, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Accountability, said in a statement. “It masquerades as a relief organization while building the infrastructure to support Hamas … It is literally funneling American tax dollars to terrorism,” Mast said.

‘Very survival of Gaza’s population at stake’, Borrell tells Blinken

The European Union’s foreign policy chief has told his US counterpart that “the very survival of the population in Gaza is at stake today” during a meeting to discuss strengthening their partnership in Washington, DC.

Josep Borrell also stressed the importance of reaching a durable ceasefire and the release of all captives, according to an EU statement. He pointed to the urgent need for unhindered humanitarian access, first and foremost through land-based crossings, and informed Blinken of the resumption of EU funding to UNRWA, the statement said.

Gaza ‘safe zones’ led to displacement, Israeli attacks on civilians: Report

A report published by the research group Forensic Architecture has called into question Israel’s argument at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that it had introduced measures to safeguard civilian life in Gaza. The supposed Israeli measures – which include evacuation orders and safe corridors – have been part of Israel’s defence against charges of genocide levelled against it by South Africa at the ICJ for its conduct during its war on Gaza.

But the report by Forensic Architecture said Israel’s “evacuation orders” have “produced mass displacement and forced transfer, and contributed to the killings of civilians throughout Gaza”. It also said that information provided by Israel to Palestinians in Gaza, ostensibly to provide them with access to safe zones, has been confusing, “resulting in cases of targeting and military bombardment of routes and zones designated as ‘safe’ by the Israeli military”.

Israel arrests Fatah official, launches raids across West Bank

Two Palestinian men have been arrested in a town near occupied East Jerusalem, according to the Wafa news agency, as the Israeli military continued its raids and attacks across the West Bank. The men arrested in the town of Abu Dis included Muhammad Rabie, a spokesman for the Fatah movement in Jerusalem, Wafa reported.

It said Israeli military raids also took place in the following West Bank locations:

  • The city of Qalqilya
  • The towns of Idhna and Yatta in Hebron governorate
  • The village of al-Lubban Asharqiya, south of Nablus
  • The town of al-Khader, south of Bethlehem
  • The Qalandiya checkpoint, north of Jerusalem, where Israeli forces shot a Palestinian man

Israel imposing conditions on the return of slain Palestinian teen’s body

Thirteen-year-old Rami al-Halhuli was shot in the chest, and he eventually died in hospital. He was shot while shooting fireworks up in the air during Ramadan.

The Israelis took his body to an Israeli hospital in occupied East Jerusalem. And then the Israeli military took his body. Now, his father has released a statement to Palestinian media saying the Israelis have promised to give his body back on Friday at midnight, but with a major caveat. The first is that only four members of the family can go and collect the body. Then he has to be buried inside the Shu’fat refugee camp.

Now, Shu’fat is on the other side of the Israeli separation wall. Now, he is from this side of the wall and his family burial site is also on this side. So of course they would want to have him buried here. They also said only 15 members of family and friends are allowed to attend the funeral. Usually, we see hundreds, perhaps thousands attending, especially when such a young kid is killed.

Palestinian rights groups say about 245 bodies of dead Palestinians are being held by Israelis at the moment.

Artists, speakers protest SXSW festival over defence sponsors, Gaza war

Dozens of acts scheduled to appear at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in the US have withdrawn in an act of protest against sponsors with ties to Israel’s war in Gaza.

As of Wednesday, at least 80 artists and panellists have pulled out of the nine-day festival, citing the involvement of several weapons companies and agencies tied to the US Department of Defense, according to the Austin for Palestine Coalition, which helped organise the protest.

Italy rejects Israel’s request for Palestinian’s extradition over rights concerns

An appeals court in Italy has refused to send a suspected Palestinian fighter to Israel, saying he risked “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment” if he was extradited, the Reuters news agency reported.

A panel of three judges in the city of L’Aquila said Anan Kamal Afif Yaeesh, 36, would face “acts constituting a violation of human rights” if the extradition request was granted, Reuters reported.

Yaeesh was one of three Palestinians arrested in central Italy on Monday on suspicion they were planning to blow up illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, according to Italian media.

White House set to impose new sanctions on 2 Israeli outposts: Report

The Biden administration is set to impose new sanctions on two Israeli outposts in the occupied West Bank and three individual Israeli settlers today, outlet Axios reports, quoting three US officials.

The illegal outposts – as settlements not authorised by the Israeli government are called – were not named in the report, but were used as a base for attacks by extremist settlers on Palestinian civilians, the officials said. The Israeli settlers were also unnamed.

The move would represent the first time the US has imposed sanctions on entire outposts and not just individual settlers. “The sanctions against the two outposts are meant to send the message that the US is targeting not only individuals but also entities that are involved in giving logistical and financial support to attacks against Palestinian civilians,” reported Axios.

Houthis successfully test hypersonic missile

The Yemen-based Houthis have successfully tested a hypersonic missile, according to Russian state media RIA Novosti, quoting a military source close to the group. “The group’s missile forces have successfully tested a missile that is capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 8 and runs on solid fuel,” the source said.

The source added that the Iran-backed Houthis intend to use the rocket, which it will manufacture itself, for military operations in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea, as well as on targets in Israel.

The Houthis have been carrying out attacks on vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November in protest of Israel’s war on Gaza.

Western leaders exposed as Netanyahu’s ‘useful idiots’

Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara highlights the complicity of Western leaders, portraying them as “useful idiots” for supporting Netanyahu’s genocidal war in Gaza. He emphasises that despite being five months too late, Western criticism of the Israeli war on Gaza is now gaining momentum.

Bishara suggests that as Israel weaponises hunger and persists in its massacres, the international community must reassess its stance and take decisive action.

Gaza death toll rises

At least 31,341 Palestinians have been killed and 73,134 wounded by Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7, Gaza’s Health Ministry said. In the past 24 hours, Israeli attacks have killed 69 Palestinians, the ministry added.

Norway warns its companies against dealing with Israeli settlements

The government of Norway has advised Norwegian companies against doing any business and trade dealings with illegal Israeli settlements, warning of repercussions for violating international law.

“Norway has long maintained that Israel’s settlement policy in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is in violation of international law, including international humanitarian law and human rights, and undermines the prospects of achieving a future Palestinian state and a peaceful resolution of the conflict,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide.

Eide added that this recommendation made it clear that Norwegian companies should be alert to the fact that engaging in any economic or financial activity in the Israeli settlements could put them at risk of contributing to violations of international humanitarian law and human rights.

Footage shows significant destruction in the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood

Aerial footage obtained by Al Jazeera shows the extent of the destruction at a residential area in the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood, northwest of Gaza City.

The area was subjected to intense Israeli air and artillery bombardment before Israeli vehicles entered it and forced its residents to flee. The footage documents the Israeli army’s destruction of residential towers called al-Maqousi Towers in addition to carrying out extensive bulldozing operations of streets and infrastructure in the neighbourhood.

The pictures also show the unprecedented destruction that befell about 10 UNRWA and government schools that were providing services to the neighbourhood’s residents. The UNRWA health centre was also destroyed, putting it out of service like other centres and facilities in the area.

The Israeli army also destroyed homes, mosques, public facilities, gardens and squares. Some residents of the area returned to inspecting their homes destroyed by the Israeli bombing and trying to find any suitable food supplies in light of the ongoing famine.
