Palestine slams UNSC for failing to pass latest ceasefire resolution

The deputy ambassador to the Palestine mission to the United Nations, Majed Bamya, says Israel’s ongoing deadly assault on Gaza has nothing to do with the Israeli captives held there.

A ceasefire would save “all lives” in the besieged enclave, he told the UN Security Council after the latest vote on a Gaza ceasefire resolution.

Bamya decried the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where famine is looming and is already “a reality in northern Gaza”, he said.

“The world should not grow accustomed to the death of Palestinians, to seeing Palestinian children starving,” Bamya said.

Hamas says US ‘direct partner’ in Israel’s war on Gaza

The Palestinian group has accused the US of being “directly responsible” for Israel’s “genocidal war” in Gaza after it vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire.

“Once again, the United States demonstrates that it is a direct partner in the aggression against our people, that it is criminal, kills children and women and destroys civilian life in Gaza, and that it is directly responsible for the genocidal war and ethnic cleansing, just like the occupation [Israel],” Hamas said in a statement.

Ceasefire resolution ‘roadmap to more bloodshed’: Israel’s UN representative

Israel’s United Nations representative Danny Danon denounced the UN Security Council resolution to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza and thanked the US for vetoing it.

“The resolution brought before this chamber was not a path to peace. It was a roadmap to more terror, more suffering, and more bloodshed,” he said. “We thank the US for exercising its veto, for standing on the side of morality and justice.”

Danon said that the draft resolution – had it passed – would have sent a message to “terrorists” that they could act with impunity. This text, he said, “rewards Hamas for their barbarity”.

Instead the Israeli terrorists can continue their reign of terror, inflict more daily suffering and bloodshed with total impunity. Look in the mirror, you and the US are turning to world back to the age of barbarity.

US sees potential ceasefire as means to release captives, not as permanent truce

Chris Hedges, a political commentator and author, says the US vetoed the latest Security Council resolution on Gaza because it does not perceive a potential ceasefire as permanent but as one in which the captives leave Gaza.

“All of the hostages could have been freed on October 8 [2023],” Hedges told Al Jazeera. “Those hostages were taken to release the some 10,000 Palestinians who were held in Israeli prisons, many without due process.”

“You could make a pretty strong argument” that Israel killed most of the captives who have lost their lives in Gaza, Hedges said.

“That’s an Israeli decision,” he said.

Hamas says no captives released unless Gaza war ends

Hamas’s acting Gaza chief Khalil al-Hayya said in an interview with Al-Aqsa TV that there would be no captives-for-prisoners swap deal with Israel unless Israel’s assault on the enclave ended.

Al-Hayya said there are “ongoing calls with mediating countries” regarding negotiations and said the group is ready to engage in talks.

He blamed PM Benjamin Netanyahu and his government for faltering talks, saying the Israeli prime minister has been stalling for “political reasons”.

US defends veto of UN Security Council resolution on Gaza ceasefire

The State Department has defended the US veto of a UN Security Council resolution on a Gaza ceasefire.

“The resolution does call for the release of hostages. What it doesn’t do is link the release of hostages to an immediate, unconditional ceasefire,” spokesperson Matthew Miller said during a news briefing.

Its fellow members, all of whom voted for the resolution, roundly criticised the US for blocking the measure put forward by the council’s 10 elected members. France’s ambassador, Nicolas de Riviere, said the resolution “very firmly” required the release of captives.

After blocking earlier resolutions on Gaza, Washington in March abstained from a vote that allowed a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire to pass.

The US got the president it deserves, it couldn't get any worse for the ME anyway. At least any last bit of credibility of the US will be gone, what's left of it that is. What fucked up country continuously vetoes stopping a genocide. Biden, Harris, Blinken, Miller, your names will remain known for the first live streamed genocide and breakdown of international and humanitarian law installed after WW2 to prevent further atrocities.

Israeli strike near southern Lebanese coastal city of Tyre kills four

Another three have been wounded in an Israeli strike on the town of Maarakeh near Tyre, NNA said, adding that the figure was an initial toll. Civil defence teams are currently working on evacuations amid the destruction, NNA said.

Israel army says soldier killed in combat in Lebanon

The Israeli military has said that a soldier was killed in south Lebanon, where its troops have waged war since late September after a year of cross-border exchanges of fire.

The death brings to 50 the military’s losses in Lebanon since the start of ground operations and comes amid a US-led push to secure a truce.

Maarakeh death toll rises to 5

We earlier reported on an Israeli attack that struck the town of Maarakeh near Tyre. The death toll now stands at five, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA), and 23 people have been wounded.

Other attacks on areas in the Tyre district today killed at least nine other people, NNA said.

Lebanese Health Ministry offers preliminary toll of Israeli strikes on Tyre

Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health has said that a preliminary toll of Israel’s bombing of Tyre shows nine people killed and 65 injured. “Nine martyrs and 65 wounded in the preliminary toll of the raids on Tyre district,” the agency said in a social media post.

Israel says three soldiers killed in Lebanon in updated toll

The Israeli military has said that three soldiers, including a 70-year-old, have been killed in fighting in southern Lebanon. Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli authorities announced that a 22-year-old soldier “fell during combat in southern Lebanon”.

Israeli authorities have updated that figure to include two more deaths, including a 70-year-old reservist named Ze’ev ‘Jabo’ Hanoch Erlich. The Yesha Council, which represents Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, said that Erlich was a “pioneer of research in geography, archaeology and Jewish history of Judea and Samaria” and lived in the settlement of Ofra.

Another solider was injured in the same incident, and has been taken to a hospital for treatment.

Demonstrators protest in Tel Aviv as US Senate to vote on blocking arms sales to Israel

Demonstrators have protested outside the US embassy’s branch office in Tel Aviv, calling for the United States to block arms sales to Israel.

Protesters blocked the road and held signs reading, “Arms Embargo Now” and “Stop the Genocide in Gaza.” One person yelled into a megaphone: “Not a nickel, not a dime, no more money for Israel’s crimes.”

The US Senate is due to vote later today on legislation that would block arms sales to Israel. It is backed by lawmakers who say Israel is obstructing aid shipments desperately needed by Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

The “resolutions of disapproval” were filed by Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats.

Strong bipartisan support for Israel means the resolutions are not expected to pass, but backers hope they will encourage Biden’s administration to do more to protect civilians in Gaza.

No chance this will pass, but at least Bernie is trying.

Well this makes a bit more sense than random air drops. It's not much, but at least it gets there.

Jordan’s army says it flies eight helicopters with aid to Gaza

Jordan’s army says it has sent eight helicopters loaded with more than 7 tonnes of aid to Gaza. The helicopters carrying food, medicine and supplies for children took off from Jordan, the army said in a statement.

It was the first time for Jordanian aircraft to land in Gaza with aid since Israel launched the war in October last year.

The army said the aid was being delivered to al-Qarara, an area near Gaza’s southern city of Khan Younis, where it would be handed over to the UN World Food Programme.

“The total amount of aid sent from the kingdom to the Gaza Strip is about 56,573 tonnes,” it added, noting the aid had been delivered through Egypt by plane, truck and dozens of airdrops.

But not to the North where it is most needed. Denied by the IDF I guess :(

How was a UN aid convoy robbed near Israeli military positions?

The looting of 97 trucks of a UN aid convoy in sight of Israeli military installations at the Karem Abu Salem crossing (Kerem Shalom for Israelis) has exacerbated the suffering of the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The 109-truck convoy of aid from several UN agencies was intercepted by armed men on Saturday night, according to UNRWA.

UNRWA said the cause was the “total breakdown of civil order”.

Most victims of Israel’s attack on Beit Lahiya are women, children

Dr Hussam Abu Safia, the director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya, told Al Jazeera Arabic that the bodies of dozens of people have been brought to the hospital following Israel’s attack on the northern town.

Most of the bodies are that of women and children, he said, adding that many more were people were still buried under the rubble. But there is no way to save those trapped in the rubble, he said. That’s because Israeli forces are laying siege to northern Gaza and have prevented emergency workers at the Palestinian Civil Defence from operating in the area.

As we’ve been reporting, at least 66 people had been killed in Israel’s attack on Beit Lahiya. Dozens more have been wounded.

The Palestinian man was shot in the chest during confrontations in the village of Kafr Dan, west of Jenin, the Wafa news agency reports. Israeli forces had earlier raided the village, the Palestinian news agency said.

Israeli forces shoot, arrest young man in West Bank’s Qalqilya

Special forces soldiers stormed the city in the occupied West Bank before opening fire on a young Palestinian man, the Wafa news agency reports. The Israeli soldiers then prevented an ambulance from reaching the young man until military reinforcements arrived and arrested him, Wafa added.

Israeli forces have arrested at least 11,700 people in the occupied West Bank since October 7, 2023, according to the Palestinian prisoners’ society.

Two more killed in Israel’s assault on West Bank village

The Wafa news agency is reporting that Israeli forces bombed a vehicle and besieged a house in the village of Kafr Dan, killing two more Palestinians.

Earlier, we reported that Israeli forces had shot and killed another man during confrontations in the village, which is located west of the city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank. The soldiers have now withdrawn from Jenin, according to Wafa.

They have killed at least eight Palestinians in the Jenin governorate and wounded 19 more over 48 hours of military operations, the agency reported.
