Egypt FM says coordinating with Turkiye to ensure ceasefire holds
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said his country and Turkiye have agreed on the importance of joint efforts to support the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
He said both sides will work together to move toward the second phase of the deal and discussed ongoing negotiations regarding the US draft Security Council resolution and the proposal for an international stabilisation force.
Abdelatty stressed the need to ensure the ceasefire continues and that Gaza does not return to war, adding that talks with Washington are ongoing over deploying an international force to monitor the implementation of the truce.
The comments come as Israel has repeatedly violated the ceasefire, launching attacks and conducting demolitions across several areas of the Gaza Strip in recent weeks.
Netanyahu thanks Trump for sending letter to Herzog requesting he be pardoned
In a post on X, Netanyahu has thanked Trump for his “incredible support” after he sent a letter to Israel’s President Isaac Herzog asking him to pardon the Israeli prime minister.
“As usual, you get right to the point and call it like it is. I look forward to continuing our partnership to bolster security and expand peace,” Netanyahu wrote.
In his letter, the US president called the corruption charges against Netanyahu “political” and “unjustified. He also hailed Netanyahu’s leadership in the war, an assault that killed more than 69,000 Palestinians, including at least 20,000 children, and which United Nations investigators have described as a genocide.
Trump cannot request a pardon for the Israeli PM: Lapid
Israeli opposition Leader Yair Lapid has told the Knesset that there comes a moment when people who call themselves part of the “national camp” must also say to a US president “We are a sovereign state; there’s a limit to intervention.”
“You cannot send letters and request a pardon for the Israeli prime minister in a criminal proceeding”, Lapid said.
Lapid is a staunch political opponent of Netanyahu’s, who also served as prime minister of the country in 2022.
UN torture committee scrutinises Israel
The UN Committee against Torture is currently holding its largest session this month, examining several countries on how they are upholding the Convention Against Torture, to which they are signatories.
First on the list is Israel, in session yesterday and today.
Twenty-eight Israeli officials appeared in front a panel of 10 UN experts on torture in Geneva.
The experts asked Israel: “Does Israel have a law against torture?” The answer from the Israeli delegation was “No.”
“Does Israel apply the agreements it has signed against torture in Gaza and the West Bank?” the continued, to which the answer was also no.
The committee confronted Israel with multiple reports and a long list of violations against Palestinians, which the Israelis denied most of them and offered justifications for the rest, including “self-defense”.
Israel has been the recipient of multiple accusations of torture in relation to its two-year war on Gaza. In one instance, a video leaked from its infamous Sde Teiman military prison appeared to show Israeli soldiers raping a Palestinian detainee.
In addition, dozens of dead bodies of Palestinian detainees have been returned to Gaza since the start of a ceasefire exhibiting signs of torture.
The UN Committee Against Torture will issue a non-binding summary of its findings at the end of November.
