Palestinians in al-Mawasi face overcrowded conditions, harsh elements

When you stand among people in these overcrowded areas like al-Mawasi, it feels like an ocean of desperation that continues to stretch on wherever you turn your face.

These areas have become a prison for families who have lost everything. Their families, their businesses, even their hope of surviving the next day.

And there are layers and layers of hardship. The smell of fires mixes with the stench of decay. We expect that some 30,000 Palestinians have made their way to al-Mawasi, and most of them have been left stranded in open spaces that cannot protect them from the elements.

These tents are made of thin plastic, nothing to block the scorching heat during the day or the cold at night.

Israeli army chief says goal is to bring down ‘Hamas rule’

Israeli military leader Eyal Zamir has reiterated his pledge to continue targeting Hamas and its members saying the army is pressing ahead with its “multi-front war” and entering the next phase.

“We are moving towards the next stages in the mission to collapse Hamas rule, that is our goal”, Halevi said, adding that freeing Israeli captives and dismantling Hamas are the army’s top objectives.

He said Israel is now in a “decisive stage” vowing its forces will pursue Hamas members in the occupied West Bank and beyond.

Zamir’s comments come a day after Israel bombed Qatar in an attack widely condemned by nations around the world and the UN as illegal.

UN and aid groups warn there is ‘no safe place’ left in Gaza, demand ceasefire

The UN Humanitarian Country Team and NGOs operating in the occupied Palestinian territory say nearly one million people in Gaza are now left with “no safe or viable options” as Israeli forces intensify attacks in Gaza City and threaten residents to forcibly evacuate and move south.

In a statement, the groups said the so-called “humanitarian area” designated by Israel in the south cannot sustain those already displaced, let alone new arrivals. Families are forced to pay excessive sums of money for transport, endure unsafe and overcrowded conditions, and continue struggling for food, water, medical care and shelter.

“The looming destruction of Gaza City sounds the gravest of alarms”, the statement said, calling for immediate humanitarian access, sustained fuel and water supplies, and protection for civilians and aid workers.

“To the international community: Act. Call for an immediate ceasefire.”

Israel kills more aid seekers in Gaza

UN human rights office notes ‘significant escalation’ of Israeli attacks on northern Gaza

The UN Human Rights Office in the Occupied Palestinian Territory says it has recorded many more Israeli attacks on northern Gaza since August 8, when the Israeli government stated that it would seize control of Gaza City.

The office says the increase in attacks has resulted in “the destruction of significant numbers of residential buildings along with the systematic demolition of entire residential neighbourhoods in northern Gaza” and that further strikes risk the “complete destruction” of what little civilian infrastructure remains.

Since August 8, the UN says it has recorded 270 Israeli attacks on residential buildings in Gaza City and Northern Gaza, with at least 379 Palestinians killed. At least 92 Palestinians have been killed during the same period in 44 Israeli strikes on tents set up by displaced Palestinians, although it notes the true number is likely far higher. Most attacks occurred with no prior warning given.

US Muslim rights group calls for GHF to be expelled from Gaza

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a US Muslim and Arab rights group, has called for the GHF to be removed from Gaza following a report identifying several people who worked security at aid sites in Gaza as members of a far-right anti-Muslim motorcycle club.

“BBC News has confirmed the identities of 10 members of the Infidels Motorcycle Club, an anti-Muslim biker gang, working in Gaza for UG Solutions, a private contractor providing security at Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid distribution points,” CAIR said in a statement.

“Infidels MC, established by Iraq war veterans in 2006, see themselves as modern Crusaders, using the Crusader cross as their symbol. The gang is currently hosting anti-Muslim hate speech on its Facebook page and has previously held a pig roast “in defiance of” the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.”

GHF has come under fire countless times since its inception earlier this year, even by an ex-employee. Critics say that it exists as nothing more than a trap leading starving Palestinians to their deaths at the hands of Israeli soldiers.

Main events on September 10th

  • At least 72 people were killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza today, the majority of whom were killed in Gaza City.
  • Widespread global condemnation has erupted after Israel attacked Hamas’s senior leadership in the Qatari capital, Doha, with India, France, Russia and others denouncing the strike.
  • Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani said that the country is forming a “collective response” to Israeli “bullying”, after decrying the “cowardly” attack and saying there was no warning of the strike from the United States.
  • Before that, PM Netanyahu said Qatar should kick the Hamas delegation out of its territory, seeming to threaten more strikes if it should fail to do so.
  • Israeli warplanes carried out more bombings of Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and other locations around the country, killing at least 35, according to the country’s Ministry of Health.
  • Several UN bodies and groups, including Amnesty International, have expressed concern over Israel’s forced evacuation order demanding one million people leave Gaza City for a so-called humanitarian zone in the south, warning that the already overcrowded area lacks basic services.

Israel arrests head of Muslim cemetery organisation: Palestinian media

The Palestinian news service Wafa has reported that Israeli authorities detained director of the Islamic Cemeteries Committee in Jerusalem, Ahmad al-Dajani, and that he has been taken to an unknown destination.

Wafa reports that al-Dajani was detained by Israeli forces while walking on Salah al-Din Street in Jerusalem, an act the news service says is part of a wider crackdown on Muslim authorities and institutions that play an important role in upholding Islamic history and culture in the city.

Visual investigation concludes munitions likely to blame for attacks on Sumud Flotilla

The open-source intelligence group Bellingcat says that an initial investigation into a series of explosions on vessels in the Global Sumud Flotilla bound for Gaza points towards incendiary munitions, contradicting denials by officials and lending credence to the flotilla’s claims that they have been the victim of numerous drone attacks.

“The largest aid flotilla in history has been attacked twice in two days whilst in port in Tunisia. Open source analysis suggests an incendiary munition is to blame,” the group said.

Tunisian officials said an explosion on a vessel on September 8 in Tunis was the result of a lighter or a cigarette butt, but videos show a flaming object descending from above.

“The flaming object must have been deployed from an aerial platform,” the group said, adding that videos of the incident include background sounds “consistent with that of a drone”.

The report says that munitions allegedly used in both attacks, one in Tunis on September 8 and another 24 hours later, show features that are “common, but not exclusive, to some models of Israeli hand grenades”.

Israeli ambassador to US blasts Qatar for hosting Hamas

Previously, we reported that Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s ambassador to the US, said Hamas’s leadership in Qatar is “on notice” and “going to be eliminated”, after Israel carried out a deadly air strike in Doha on Tuesday.

Now, in a speech at the US Capitol complex in Washington on Wednesday, at an event marking the fifth anniversary of the Abraham Accords, Leiter took the opportunity to harshly criticise Qatar.

“What is Qatar doing if not financing and supporting terrorism by playing host to Hamas, the very people who sent the terrorists who murdered six people sitting at a bus stop in Jerusalem waiting to go about their business?” Leiter said.

Earlier, Qatar had said that its hosting of an office of the Palestinian group “took place within the framework of Qatar’s mediation efforts [as] requested by the United States and Israel”.

Qatar says role as international mediator will continue, despite Netanyahu’s statements

We reported earlier on Qatar’s statement strongly condemning Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s remarks regarding Israel’s attack on Doha. In that statement, Qatar also said that despite Netanyahu’s “attempts at discrediting its credibility and efforts, the State of Qatar continues to act as a trusted and impartial international partner to establish security and stability in the region and beyond and will take all necessary measures to defend its sovereignty and territory”.

“No effort will be spared in confronting with resolve any attempts to undermine its standing and role,” Qatar said in the statement. “We will work with our partners to ensure Netanyahu is held accountable and that his reckless and irresponsible actions are brought to an end,” it said.

“Qatar’s unwavering commitment to international law and the Charter of the United Nations is unequivocal,” it added.

Beyond Israel’s war on Gaza, Qatar has served as a mediator in various international conflicts, facilitating peace discussions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, spearheading initiatives to reunite Ukrainian children displaced by Russia’s war, and acting as a crucial intermediary in Afghan peace and humanitarian negotiations by hosting talks with the Taliban.

The message was conveyed by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty during a meeting with the emir in Doha, according to Qatari state news agency QNA.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said Abdelatty’s visit was aimed at expressing the country’s “full solidarity” with Qatar and “to discuss ways to deal with the dangerous Israeli escalation and coordinate positions” with senior Qatari officials.

Qatar and Egypt, along with the US, have been mediating to end the Israeli war on Gaza and secure the release of captives.

‘Categorically false’: Qatar denies report it’s reevaluating US security partnership

Qatar says a report by US media outlet Axios saying Doha is reevaluating its security agreement with Washington is “categorically false”.

In a statement, the Qatari International Media Office said the claim “is a clear and failed attempt to drive a wedge between Qatar and the US by those who benefit from chaos in the region and oppose peace.

“The Qatar-US security and defence partnership is stronger than ever and continues to grow,” it added. “Our two countries have supported each other for many years, and we will continue working together to promote global peace and stability.”

Israel has attacked six countries in the past 72 hours

On Tuesday, Israel launched an air strike on Hamas leaders in a residential compound located in Qatar’s capital, Doha, during a meeting of the group to discuss a US-proposed ceasefire for Gaza.

The strike killed six people, including the son of senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya, the director of al-Hayya’s office, as well as three bodyguards and a Qatari security officer.

The attack was part of a wider wave of Israeli strikes extending beyond its borders and marked the sixth country attacked by Israel’s military in just 72 hours and the seventh country since the start of this year.

Israeli strike kills person in southern Lebanon

Lebanon’s Health Ministry reports that an Israeli drone attack in the southern Tyre district hit a motorcycle, killing one person. It follows a Tuesday raid south of Beirut that wounded one person, and Monday attacks in eastern Lebanon that killed five, which Israel said targeted Hezbollah sites.

In a statement, the military said it had carried out attacks against Hezbollah “infrastructure” in the Bekaa Valley and in the Zrariyeh area of southern Lebanon. There was no immediate comment by Hezbollah.

Israel’s attack in Doha sends message to the region

Former Israeli government adviser Daniel Levy says Israel’s attack against a Hamas delegation in Qatar sends a message not just to the Palestinian group, but to the region.

“Either get on board with our project of regional hegemony, which includes the displacement and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, or we dare you because we have America on our side and we are unassailable militarily,” Levy said.

Qatar is expected to convene an emergency Arab-Islamic summit to discuss Israel’s attack in Doha, state news agency QNA reported.

Levy said Qatar’s regional allies attending the meeting on Sunday “have significant capacity to deter Israel”. “[Whether they] will use that is the question on the table right now,” he said.

Hamas says attack on Doha targeted negotiators, calls it assault on peace efforts

Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum has issued a televised statement on Israel’s attack on Qatar’s capital, Doha.

Here are some of his main points:

  • Barhoum said the Israeli attempt to assassinate Hamas’s negotiating delegation in Doha and continued threats to target the movement’s leadership abroad show Israel’s “failure to achieve its goals” after 23 months of war on Gaza.
  • He said the assassination attempt occurred while the delegation was discussing a ceasefire proposal.
  • He added that the bombing targeted the home of the head of the negotiating delegation, wounding his wife, the wife of his slain son, Hammam al-Hayya, and his grandchildren.
  • The “crime”, he said, was an attack on the entire negotiation process.
  • Barhoum said the Israeli strike was not just an attack on Qatar’s sovereignty and security, but “a declaration of open war on all Arab and Islamic nations” and a threat to the stability of the entire region.
  • He also warned that Israel’s actions endanger regional and global security and called on world leaders to hold Israel accountable for its crimes.

US should ‘work with regional leaders’ to ensure Israel is held accountable

Salman Shaikh, a former UN official and the founder of The Shaikh Group, says the relationship between Qatar and the US “will endure” because it is needed for the sake of regional security.

“We all know that Qatar has played a critical role” in mediating ceasefire talks not just between Israel and Hamas but in other conflicts as well, Shaikh told Al Jazeera.

Trump “has to work with regional leaders”, Shaikh said. “I think he’ll hear a very loud, clear and coordinated message the likes we haven’t seen before.”

Shaikh said Trump needs to realise that Israel “has never been serious about negotiating peace”.

If the US doesn’t push Israel to engage in serious peace talks, then the US will be in an “endless war”.

Those killed included a Saba news agency journalist, Abdullah Mahdi al-Bahri, who was killed while he was working. The General Corporation for Radio and Television said that the Al-Yaman newspaper was also targeted by Israel.

Saba news agency said in a statement that the attack was part of Israel’s “blatant attempts to silence the free media that continues to expose its crimes and its rampant violence in Palestine, Yemen and other countries in the region”.

As we reported earlier, Israel’s attack on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and al-Jawf governorate, killed at least 35 people on Wednesday. Yemen’s Ministry of Health also said 131 people were wounded in the attack.

Israeli strikes on Yemen aimed to deflect after Qatar attack

Rob Geist Pinfold, a lecturer in international security at King’s College London, says he believes Israel’s latest air strikes on Yemen are an attempt to deflect attention from mounting international condemnation of its attack on Qatar.

The Houthi group said multiple journalists and civilian bystanders were among those killed by Israel’s attack in the capital Sanaa on Wednesday. Israel said it struck what it called Houthi “military camps” and a media department.

UK unions call on government to repeal ‘authoritarian’ ban on Palestine Action group

The British Trades Union Congress has unanimously passed a motion calling on the British government to take action to end Israel’s war on Gaza, including ending all “military collaboration with Israel” and repealing “the proscription of Palestine Action”.

The motion, passed on Wednesday, called on the government to “repeal the authoritarian proscription of Palestine Action under counter-terrorism laws and uphold and strengthen the right to peaceful protest following the arrest of activists”.

The unions, which represent some five million workers across the United Kingdom, passed the motion as Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government continues to order mass arrests of peaceful protesters holding signs in support of Palestine Action.

Speaking in support of the motion, the president of the Public and Commercial Services Union, Martin Cavanagh, said, “Let us be clear: Protest is not terrorism. Solidarity is not a crime. And silence in the face of injustice is not an option.”

“This is what Israel is willing to do, and it’s waiting and waiting and waiting, and we see all the time how they [Hamas] manipulate the proposals,” Herzog said in response to a question from a journalist.

Herzog’s comments came a day after Israel carried out an attack on a Hamas delegation in the Qatari capital Doha, in a strike widely condemned by the international community.

As we previously reported, Herzog also reportedly had a “tough” discussion with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Wednesday regarding ending Israel’s war on Gaza.
