My point is while they've stopped producing blank ones they're gonna continue being in the BD business for now, probably for about another decade or so.

I agree that's debatable though I kinda doubt it but lets just wait and see what happens since it won't be that long till we know.

My point is that every game, film you buy on BD today was pressed on a "blank one". Film- and games BDs don't fall from the Sky.

Sony have not stopped producing blank Blu-Ray discs, they’ve stopped producing the very specific product of “Rewritable Blu-ray Discs” In their follow-up comments they even specified exactly what this means, and highlighted the Japanese Market as one where re-writable discs are still used regularly to record TV shows by consumers. It is just this product that is ceasing production, not all Blu-ray Discs. They will still produce the Blu-ray discs that are used for gaming, films etc.

Here’s an excerpt from an article about what they said and their follow-up statement:

As a result of Sony’s initial announcement, the internet has been abuzz with conclusions that the Blu-ray Disc format is ending. However, there is more to the story as a follow-up statement issued by Sony provides some additional clarification:  “In Japan, we have a unique culture of recording TV programs in the Blu-ray disc and we sell blank storage Blu-ray discs for this use only in Japan. The subject of this notification is these discs.

Ok. But its a starting point. You don't start discontinuing BDs also not specific products. Also Blu Ray would not end just because Sony discontinues it. As they are not the inventor only part of the BD group there would be others who could produce it. And remember one thing: Once a river starts to flow it does not stop so easily.😉 Anyway i think this was just the start.

Sony is clearly shifting away from discs as this sales report shows, also the fact that the PS5 DD is only produced in limited quantities and they do not even sell bundles for the Slim anymore (at least where I live), let alone the Pro speaks volumes. Summa sumarum: If Sony was so focused on physical we would get more PS5 DDs and Console bundles. Sony would not highlight the rise of digital the way they are doing.

Not sure where you live but that is a stretch as skus of PS5 slim with DD accounted for over 50% of the latest NPD figures according to Mat Piscatella. Also, out of the 9.5M shipped last quarter that number would be even higher. The standard sku with DD is still the dominant one for PS5 regardless of where you live.

In addition to the above reply, I'd also add that currently here in the UK the Disc-Drive console bundle is currently the number one selling console on Amazon PlayStation hardware, with the disc drive being 4th and the Digital only console 5th.

The Disc Drive console is also in stock, being sold at normal price and stock does not appear to be limited in any way.

Exactly, it's been available here in Canada on Amazon.ca for the last week and Best Buy Canada has been in and out of stock quite regularly for the last few weeks. It's obvious that the low stock initially came from scalpers in September and October after the Pro was announced. I bought my DD back in September for the Pro that was coming in November.

Then of course with Sony's high shipment count this past Christmas quarter, the majority of the DD's being manufactured was for the console sku bundle of the 9.5M shipped. Now that we are passed that, shipments are getting better now with Disc Drive.

Ok,but that does not change the fact that 70%+ games where sold digitally and the DD is produced in limited quantities. The later PS6 comes the more likley it is that it will be digital only. PS7 will be 100% digital, like it or not.

Its hard to say. Last week, the PS5 sold over 100.000 in Japan (one week).
With "Ghost of Yotei, Wolverine, GTA6 and Death Stranding 2" - i see fantastic times for new big sales figures.
And all xbox-games coming for PlayStation 5 in future. 130-150 million are possible :)

Monster Hunter is one of THE IPs in japan! I highly doubt Wolverine or GOY will cause such a boost to the PS5 in japan. I am even not so sure with GTAVI.

GTA6 might but only if it's released in the holiday season or a special holiday. Monster Hunter has a crazy system selling effect, but it's frontloaded compared to Nintendo's stuff.
