PS5 vs PS3 Sales Comparison - June 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006 in North America and Japan and in March 2007 in Europe. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS3 Worldwide:

Gap change over last 12 months: 8,904,634 - PS5

Total Lead: 16,463,442 - PS5

PlayStation 5 Total Sales 39,641,116

PlayStation 3 Total Sales: 23,177,674

June 2023 is the 32nd month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 3 by 0.92 million units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has grown its lead over the PS3 by 8.90 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 16.46 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 39.64 million units in 32 months, while the PlayStation 3 sold 23.18 million units. Month 32 for the PlayStation 5 is June 2023 and for the PlayStation 3 is June 2009.

The PlayStation 3 did not reach current PlayStation 5 sales until month 47 where it had sold 40.53 million units.

The PlayStation 3 crossed 30 million in month 38, 40 million in month 47, and 50 million in month 54. The PlayStation 3 sold 87.4 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 47.76 million units behind lifetime PS3 sales.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S both launched in November 2020. The PlayStation 5 launched November 12, 2020 in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, and the rest of the world on November 19, 2020. The Xbox Series X|S launched worldwide on November 10, 2020.

In the last 12 months, the PlayStation 5 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 10.59 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 17.28 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 39.64 million units in 32 months, while the Xbox Series X|S sold 22.36 million units. The PlayStation 5 has a 63.9 percent marketshare (+4.6% year-over-year), compared to 36.1 percent for the Xbox Series X|S (-4.6% year-over-year).

This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with the combined aligned sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

Gap change in latest month: 512,532 - PS5 & XSX|S

Gap change over last 12 months: 395,495 – PS4 & XOne

Total Combined PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Sales: 62,006,099

Total Combined PS4 and Xbox One Sales: 63,649,221

In June 2023, the gap grew in favor of the combined sales of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the last month by 0.51 million units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 and Xbox One has sold 0.40 million units more than the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are currently behind by 1.64 million units.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in their first 32 months sold a combined 62.00 million units, while the PS4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 63.65 million units. Month 32 is June 2023 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, while for the PS4 and Xbox One it is June 2016.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 175.03 million units after 116 months. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are 113.03 million units behind lifetime sales of the PS4 and Xbox One.

Switch vs DS Sales Comparison - June 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS Global:

Gap change in latest month: 552,913 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 1,132,208 - DS

Total Lead: 14,709,952 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 127,701,893

DS Total Sales: 142,411,845

June 2023 is the 76th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 0.55 million units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the DS has outsold the Switch by 1.13 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 14.71 million units.

The 76th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is June 2023, while for the DS it is February 2011. The Switch has sold 127.70 million units, while the DS sold 142.41 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 26.32 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

It's only up from here... I think the only month DS will beat Switch will be December 2011 which I think equates to Switch in April 2024.
